THE BAXTERS: SARAH(4) 1758-1839 Sarah Chenoweth, the oldest child of Arthur Chenoweth and Ann Beasman, was born December 20, 1759 in Baltimore Co., MD. She married there at the age of 19 to Samuel Baxter, who was 21 at the time. Samuel was the son of Greenbury Baxter and Charity Lane. His sister, Sarah, married Sarah's uncle, William Chenoweth, and his sister, Elizabeth, married Sarah's brother, Arthur. Samuel rendered loyal service during the Revolutionary War as a private and collector of fines for non-enrollers. All 9 of Sarah and Samuel's children were born in Baltimore Co., MD. By 1803, the Baxters had settled near Cross Creek, Brooke Co., VA (now WV) near Samuel's uncle, William Baxter. On the 1810 Virginia Census of Brooke County, Samuel Baxter, son-in-law Henry Butler, and Henry's father, Nicholas Butler, are all found on page 11. Son-in-law, Samuel Gist, who was married to the Baxter's oldest daughter, Annie, is found on page 1 of this same census. Arthur Chinwith, Sarah's brother, is on page 7 of the Census where he was shown as operating a country gristmill. In 1812, the Baxters moved west to Muskingum Co., OH. On December 2, 1812, Samuel Baxter purchased from John Newalls, Sr. of Westmoreland Co., PA, the southwest quarter of Section No. 22 of Township No. 2 in Range No. 8 of the United States Military Tract within the District of Zanesville and for which a patent was issued by the President of the United States on April 20, 1812. This 160 acre tract of land in southern Muskingum Twp. would remain in the family until September 1863 when their son Samuel Baxter Jr. and his wife Actus sold the property (less the meetinghouse and graveyard) as they were preparing to move west to Henderson Twp., Knox Co., IL.

By CLIVE BARNES Email Archives Print Reprint February 20, 2001 For a special New York Pulse series, Post critic Clive Barnes has been revisiting Broadway favorites to see how they hold up over time. YESSIR, that's my Bebe. Nosir, I ain't crazy.Yessir, the altogether phenomenal Bebe Neuwirth is gorgeously back in Broadway's "Chicago" for a limited time - presumably to help the show through Broadway's traditional winter doldrums. Not, in fairness, that the show needs any help. It is still as keenly sharp and as atmospherically tacky as a '20s gin mill where, as they say, the gin's cold and the music's hot. And the women aren't so lukewarm either. Now in its fifth year at the Shubert Theatre, this Walter Bobbie/Ann Reinking concert-style, brilliantly stripped-down version (with the accent often on the strip) of the 1975 John Kander and Fred Ebb musical "Chicago" looks as fresh as an artfully artificial daisy. Actually, all this season I have been pleasantly surprised at how well Broadway's old war-horses are bearing up, despite the natural vicissitudes of cast-changes and the customary lassitudes of repetition. And "Chicago" is certainly no exception.

"GOLDEN BOY"
Long Wharf Theatre, New Haven, Connecticut
December 16 and 17, 2000
Starring Rodney Hicks, Michael Rupert, and Nana Visitor I've found final performances do tend to have a bit of magic in them as the cast usually goes all out for their last time together. I was fortunate enough to see Nana in her final performance of Chicago in Las Vegas and it was truly a magical event, probably the single most outstanding stage play I've ever seen. The whole cast was excellent, far better than the Chicago mess I saw on Broadway last March with Bebe Nuewirth and Belle Calaway. I was appalled that the NY production had allowed the quality to drop so low. That tired cast looked bored and thoroughly uninspired; just going through the motions. It lacked heart and was dumbed down into a clown act, completely missing the cutting ironies of this brilliantly written play. Oops, end rant; that's another topic for another day. The original play "Golden Boy" was written in the 1930s by Clifford Odets. It was produced on Broadway in 1937 as well as in a 1930 movie starring William Holden and Barbara Stanwyck. It was remade into a musical and premiered on Broadway in 1964 with Sammy Davis Jr. in the title role. This revival was adapted by director Keith Glover and Tony and Grammy award winning composer Charles Strouse (for Bye Bye Birdie and Annie). As an aside, Strouse and his lyricist partner, Lee Adams, wrote "Those Were the Days", the theme song to "All in the Family". For this adaptation Strouse and Glover wrote several new songs and revamped the score to reflect its roots in Harlem jazz.

Glitter, glamour and gunplay add up to some sinful fun in Chicago
Joey Guerra Entertainment Editor
Theater Review
Murder never seemed as sexy as it does in Chicago . At least not when the culprits are John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. Armed with a witty storyline, memorable songs and some truly fabulous dancing, the trio have concocted a funny, slick and shamelessly decadent musical that's still showing off its well-heeled gams on Broadway after taking home six Tony Awards in 1997. The current touring production retains all the glitter and glamour that have made this revival a runaway hit. Murder, money and mayhem are the prices of fame in this world of chorus girls and fast-talking lawyers. Inspired by the 1926 play of the same name (which was based on real court cases), Chicago also appeared in the form of a 1942 movie, Roxie Hart , and the original musical premiered in 1975. In this pared-down production, sets and costumes are kept to a bare minimum - literally. Slinky black dresses and skin-tight shirts are the wardrobe of choice. In all this artful spareness, Chicago achieves a come-hither appeal that's impossible to refuse.

FC: A RECONSTRUCTION: SHARDS OF A MIRROR
Electric Lounge,
through January 30
Running time: 1 hr
The sudden sucking sound that precedes a bomb's explosion. Fingers and hands ripped off in a sliver of time. And a brilliant, isolated soul orchestrating it all with mathematical precision. These are the haunting images left by FC: A Reconstruction , an intriguing new play by Tim O'Brien (not the Vietnam author), which patches together through a series of monologues the lives of three men before and after a bomb delivered by the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, ripped them apart. Named for the two letters that each Unabomber package bore, FC These four stories coalesce better than you might expect, with strong direction and lighting design from Nic Dimond, who guides our eye seamlessly from scene to scene. Unlike The Executioner's Song or other tomes which peer inside the black soul of a murderer, FC skirts the surface of the Unabomber himself. Indeed, Kaczynski's known writings and public demeanor point more to a chillingly brilliant genius (shades of Hannibal Lecter) than the manifesto-spewing madman portrayed here by David Meihaus. But this raging soul is used as an intriguing counterpoint to these other men, most notably the good ethics professor, whose denial of moral absolutes and society-by-rote doesn't lie too far from the deep end into which Kaczynksi sinks. In the doctor and the victim himself, we see the courage and the resilience that endures even in darkness. Despite its cerebral spin

Quinn bids for rare feature double
By Tony Arrold
May 08, 2004 INEXPERIENCE rather than a lack of belief in the ability of his mount Toulouse Lautrec is jockey Rod Quinn's main concern in the run-up to the $200,000 Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm today.
"He's a big, awkward sort with a lot to learn and I think the other 19 horses around him will be his biggest hassle to deal with," Quinn said on the eve of what could be a milestone day of riding for him. Toulouse Lautrec, who has only raced four times and won at his past three starts, is the 4-1 equal favourite for the Queensland Guineas. Quinn, the utility rider for John Hawkes's stable in Sydney, gets the rare opportunity today to strike the feature double at Eagle Farm. His only other ride is aboard Toulouse Lautrec's stablemate, Only Words, the $2.30 favourite for the $100,000 weight-for-age Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (1400m).

Kander and Ebb's Chicago
Fox Theatre
Reviewed by Steve Callahan
Back to the index Chicago has opened at the Fox , and it's a solid, exciting, first-class piece of Broadway. This revival was directed by Walter Bobbie, and his work won him the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics' Circle awards as Best Director. Ann Reinking gives us choreography that is at turns flashy, subtle (almost minimalist) or classic Broadway-and always sexy. Costumer William Ivey Long has his own shelf of Obies, Tonies and other awards. Here he decks his cast in, surprisingly, nothing but black! Every stitch that the performers wear is black (or dark gray), but, happily, many of the girls wear very few stitches at all, so there is much to contrast with that black. Music, by John Kander, is relentlessly jazzy, with a frequent rag-time edge. It's beautifully performed by an on-stage band. Chicago is set in the twenties and it deals with a sensational murder case. Roxie Hart is a small-time cabaret singer who blows away her lover when he tries to walk out on her. We see her with her high-priced hot-shot lawyer, Billy Flynn, striving to achieve two things: first, an acquittal, and second, fame and celebrity from all the publicity that surrounds the case. Chicago first appeared some years ago, but how it resonates for today! It was written long before the O. J. trial, but in his efforts to turn Roxie's trial into a soap opera and thereby win the hearts of the jury, Billy Flynn is fully in the mold of Johnny Cochran (though I think Hal Linden, who plays Flynn has also taken a few cues from Melvin Belli).
