Professor Burns applies standard, often advanced methods of analytical chemistry (such as AA, HPLC, GC, XPS, DSC, electron microprobe and PIXE spectroscopies) to study the environmental ly-induced deterioration of ancient architectural monuments in the developing world. Principal, often site-specific causes of deterioration are quantified and, if necessary, computer. Information secured in this fashion is used to design optimal cost-effective methods of conservation and restoration of antiquities, which frequently cover large areas of the land. Findings of this research are then used to identify environmental phenomena which are harmful not only to the country's cultural heritage, but to its population. In a parallel effort, Professor Burns is involved in theoretical and computational studies of reaction kinetics and dynamics of simple chemical reactions, such as diatom dissociations and atomic recombinations. George Burns
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. George Burns January 20 March 9 ) was a legendary American vaudeville comedian who went on to work in movies, radio, and early television. He was born as Nathan Birnbaum to Louis and Dorothy Birnbaum, the ninth of twelve children, in New York City New York Burns teamed with his second wife Gracie Allen sitcom around situations where she said (and did) ditsy things and he made wry comments as asides to the audience, often while brandishing a cigar or golf club. After her death in 1964, he continued to perform and is probably best remembered for playing the title role in the 1977 film Oh, God! and its sequels (1980 and 1984). Burns remained deeply devoted to Allen after she passed away. He never re-married, and though he developed a running joke of being a sexy senior citizen (he was often seen in the company of beautiful young women), he was never crude and his devotion to his wife was unquestioned up until his death. On his relationships, he said, "I'd go out with women my age, but there are no women my age."

George Burns - Going In Style
By Laura Waskin He was an Academy Award-winning actor, comedian, dancer, singer, and best-selling author. He began his career around the turn of the century performing in a barbershop quartet (when it was all the rage), then moved on to vaudeville. One-reel shorts, then feature films followed. He graduated to a top-rated radio show for 17 years, a top-rated television show for another 8 years, and, finally, over the last 30 years of his life he played the Vegas clubs. Meanwhile he released record albums, appeared in top grossing movies, tv specials, and, oh yes, he still enjoyed a good cigar, a habit he picked up in 1910 when he was a teenager.
This January he celebrated his 100 th birthday, and then quietly passed into entertainment history on March 9, 1996.
th century. Most people did not have telephones at that time, and Henry Ford’s horseless carriage called the "Quadricycle"; was still just a novelty item. Rocket ships and space shuttles were nothing more than a glimmer in the imagination of Jules Verne. The frontier days of the American west were still fresh in people’s minds.
    th
th birthday was his entrance into the world of show business. George decided to join a group of neighborhood boys and became a member of the Peewee Quartet. The youths performed anywhere from street corners to ferryboats and always had time to fit in a local talent contest or two, which they occasionally won. George continued to attend school while performing and completed the fourth grade. However, by now vaudeville called, and New York, was the perfect place for an ambitious young song and dance man to start.

BURNS, GEORGE U.S. Comedian/Actor/Singer George Burns moved in the course of his lengthy career from serving as a vaudeville straight man to being one of the grand old men of American show businessand an expert on the history of entertainment in the United States. The television program he shared with his wife, comedienne Gracie Allen, for eight years (1950 to 1958 on CBS) was central to Burns' professional life, chronologically and symbolically. According to accounts of his early life (all of which originate from Burns himself), he was drawn to show business as a small child, singing on street corners with friends for pennies, and never seriously considered any other calling. Burns floundered in vaudeville for years, changing his act with great frequency, until he met Allen in 1922 (or 1923; accounts vary), and the couple inaugurated the straight-man/"Dumb Dora" pairing they would enact for more than four decades. The team moved successfully into film and radio in the early 1930s and finally into television in October 1950. In The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show

In memoriam, George Burns (1896-1996) Photo from Houston Chronicle, page 1D, Jan. 18, 1996: "100 Facts about Centenarian George Burns" by Andy Edelstein of Newsday. On January 20, 1896, Nathan Birnbaum was born destined to become George Burns, one of this Nation's greatest comedic performers and a centenarian. Why did he reach his destiny and others did not? No one can say for sure. But he did have three good things going for him: he had a great set of genes; a great sense of humor; and a great capacity to never give up working, never give up loving, and never say never. While many of us may not be as lucky as the late Mr. Burns was in the "good genes" department, we can, nevertheless, learn from him and develop a good sense of humor and never say never. And while our lives might not be as long as his, they can be as rich and rewarding. Speaking of long lives, Mr. Burns, joined some 56,000 Americans 100+ years of age, the fastest growing age group in this country. In 1980, when Willard Scott of NBC TV started recognizing 100th birthdays, there was just a trickle of letters weekly; now he receives over 400 per week. Notwithstanding how remarkable becoming 100 years is and how many we have now, if demographers' projections are anywhere near accurate, by the middle of the next century when many of our children and grandchildren will be living, there may be as many as 2.5 million centenarians! If that astounds you, say "wow," because that is an astounding prospect to ponder: Who will take care of them? Who will train their care givers? Why are our national policies so uncertain regarding this issue facing today's 33,000,000 older Americans and tommorow's 76,000,000 aging baby boomers?
