When someone who is known for being comedic does something straight, it' s always "a big breakthrough" or a "radical departure." Why is it no one ever says that if a straight actor does comedy? Are they presuming comedy is easier? When you have a dream you've got to grab it and never let go. I have always grown from my problems and challenges, from the things that don't work out, that's when I've really learned. Celebrity was a long time in coming; it will go away. Everything goes away.

THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW
U.S. Comedy/Variety Show
When The Carol Burnett show aired in September of 1967 on CBS, no one expected it to run eleven years. The show gave Carol Burnett, along with regulars Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner (who left in 1974), and Tim Conway (whose occasional guest appearances became permanent in 1975) an opportunity to fuse the best of live, vaudeville-style performance with the creative benefits of time and tape. Burnett's ensemble quickly bonded into a tight unit of professionals who looked, and acted, as if performing on The Carol Burnett Show was the best fun an entertainer could have. In reality, the meticulously-structured, musical-comedy program became one of the last, and one of the finest prime time variety shows to link the modern television age with Tin Pan Alley and the Golden Ages of motion pictures and television. Throughout the show's run, Burnett maintained, and increased, her creative input and control. She worked closely with a team of writers, among them Ken Welch and his wife, Mitzi, who had a strong sense of Burnett's attributes and strengths. (Ken Welch had written the famous "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles" routine which had catapulted comic chanteuse Burnett to fame in 1956.) The show combined musical comedy with humorous sketches, using the ensemble of players as well as weekly guest stars, such as Jim Naybors, Cher, and Julie Andrews.

25. Tim Conway... Captain Marvel?
Short description of a skit from the carol burnett Show.
http://members.aol.com/kcryan/shtim.htm
An interesting exception is Tim Conway. Tim was a regular on the old Carol Burnett Show , a variety hour that featured comedy skits and an occasional song. One episode featured a comic strip musical, with various cast members and guests dressed as comic characters rushing on and off stage. Tim Conway was dressed up in a bulked up Captain Marvel costume, and wandered around looking confused, saying "HO-ly MO-ley". Okay, so it's not Shakespeare, but I'd love to see it again.

37. The Carol Burnett Shows
The series was based on the sketches (and a 1978 special) featuring the bickering family from The carol burnett Show . I just loved your carol burnett page!
http://www.tvparty.com/vaburnett3.html
Seemingly out of the blue, NBC picked up the half-hour sitcom Mama's Family as a midseason replacement in January, 1983. The series was based on the sketches (and a 1978 special) featuring the bickering family from 'The Carol Burnett Show'. The production was headed by Joe Hamilton and Carol Burnett made several appearances during the show's first season as Eunice , and these episodes stand as some of the funniest sitcoms ever filmed (believe it or not). Regulars were Ken Berry as dullard brother Vint, Rue McClanahan ('Maude') as Thelma's sister Fran and Dorothy Lyman (Opal on 'All My Children') as the slutty neighbor Naomi Oates. Eric Brown and Karin Argoud played the bratty kids. Back (occasionally) were Betty White as sister Ellen and Harvey Korman (who directed many episodes) served as the show's narrator . When the program returned for a second season, Carol Burnett was nowhere to be seen. She and her husband split up - Burnett got the house and he got the show, presumably.
