Hi! My name is Robert Brown and I've been a photographer for over twenty years. I specialize mainly in landscape and scenic photography. Many of my current images are from California, but after much delay I've finally updated this site with pictures I took during an extensive trip to Central Europe over the summer. I stayed the longest in Prague but I also went to Vienna, Berlin, Budapest, and Krakow. I'm interested to know what you think of my pictures so E-Mail me if you have any comments!

BROWN, ROBERT T. (1873-1952). Robert T. Brown, judge, was born in 1873 at Brown's Lake, three miles north of Henderson, Texas, the son of Taylor Brown, Jr. His mother was the daughter of Robert W. Smith, qv a Texas army officer who fought at San Jacinto. Brown was educated in public schools and at Rock Hill Institute, qv near Minden. He read law in the offices of John Arnold and W. C. Buford. Brown said that he received his training "in the field with chain and compass," and since most of the estimated 25,000 cases he tried during his twenty-seven years on the bench involved boundaries and titles, it was to his advantage that he knew the territory. He was admitted to the bar in 1898 and served two terms as county attorney. In 1924 he became district judge of the Fourth Judicial District, which at that time included Rusk, Panola, and Shelby counties. The East Texas boom produced thousands of lawsuits, and many important ones came to Brown's court. He sat on the case against Columbus M. Joiner qv to put the oil well Daisy Bradford No. 3 into receivership. He sat on Joiner's cases against Ed Laster and H. L. Hunt

Thought Experiments
1. Examples of Thought Experiments
One of the most beautiful early examples (Lucretius, De Rerum Natura ) attempts to show that space is infinite: If there is a boundary to the universe, we can toss a spear at it. If the spear flies through, it isn't a boundary after all; if the spear bounces back, then there must be something beyond the supposed edge of space, a cosmic wall which is itself in space that stopped the spear. Either way, there is no edge of the universe; space is infinite. This example nicely illustrates many of the common features of thought experiments: We visualize some situation; we carry out an operation; we see what happens. It also illustrates their fallibility. (In this case we've learned how to conceptualize space so that it is both finite and unbounded.) Often a real experiment that is the analogue of a thought experiment is impossible for physical, technological, or just plain practical reasons; but this needn't be a defining condition of thought experiments. The main point is that we seem able to get a grip on nature just by thinking, and therein lies the great interest for philosophy. How is it possible to learn (apparently) new things about nature without new empirical data?

The Guardian
The name of the physicist and astronomer Robert Hanbury Brown, who has died aged 85, is synonymous with the pioneering of radar and the development of radio astronomy. Among his many inventions, the most outstanding was, perhaps, the intensity interferometer, which he achieved despite assurances from mathematicians and physicists alike that it was impossible. The world of science and technology has cause to be grateful that he forsook an early plan for a future as a classics scholar to become an engineer instead. He gave a stirring account of his life in his autobiography, Boffin: A Personal Story Of The Early Days Of Radar, Radio Astronomy And Quantum Optics (1991). It is a fascinating insight into the second world war quest for an effective radar, and of the early days at the Jodrell Bank radio observatory in Cheshire, as well as the highly entertaining story of a man who lived and breathed science, with all its excitement, interest and difficulty. Sir Bernard Lovell once said that had Hanbury Brown not sought a research fellowship at Manchester University after the war, the Jodrell Bank radio telescope might never have been built. Characteristically, Hanbury Brown dismissed this notion with an embarrassed shake of the head. But his recruitment to Sir Bernard's pioneering team in 1949, and his subsequent emergence as professor of radio astronomy at Manchester in 1960, took a substantial load off Lovell during the period when he most needed time and energy to fight the battles for money and sound construction of the radio telescope.

British astronomer and writer who observed on the Jodrell Bank 218-foot "wire bowl" with Hazard and discovered that M31 was a radio source. He is noted for his design, development, and use of the intensity interferometer despite being assured by colleagues that such a device was a physical impossibility. Hazard

Scottish botanist who noted the nucleus in orchids in 1831. Further researches showed that nuclei were present in many plants, but Brown did not believe them to be an essential part of the tissue. Brown was the first to separate plants into angiosperms and gymnosperms. He discovered the random thermal motion of pollen grains suspended in water in 1827. The effect, now called Brownian motion, is visible evidence for the kinetic theory, as was shown by Einstein . Brownian motion was used by Perrin to provide two independent methods from which Boltzmann's constant could be determined. Einstein Perrin
