Reprinted from: The Microscope, BROWNIAN MOVEMENT IN CLARKIA POLLEN: A REPRISE OF THE FIRST OBSERVATIONS Brian J Ford INTRODUCTION Much interest has focussed on Brown's first observations of Brownian Movement* in 1827. His discovery of the phenomenon has been widely misunderstood. It has been believed that Brown's attention was directed to movement of pollen grains themselves ( , and there have been claims ( that his microscope was not sufficiently developed for the observation of so diminutive a phenomenon. It has become plain that many workers have discussed the problem without consulting Brown's original words on the subject, and it is abundantly clear that the optical propensities of the original microscope(s) owned by Brown have been widely ignored. A recreation of Brown's pioneering demonstration is presented in correlation with the privately printed account Brown himself prepared in 1827. ROBERT BROWN, BOTANIST In October 1798, the young officer was in London to recruit for the regiment. He was introduced to the eminent botanist Sir Joseph Banks as "a Scotchman, fit to pursue an object with constance and [a] cold mind." Within two years, Banks was planning an epic voyage of discovery to the new territories that we now know as Australia. His natural choice for botanist on board was the young Brown. He sailed under Captain Matthew Flinders at a salary of £420, at the time a generous sum. When they sailed on board the

Dr. Brown's research interests center on observational, theoretical, and laboratory studies of planetary surfaces and surface processes. His recent work has focused on: models of processes acting on icy surfaces in the outer solar system, characterization of disks around nearby stars, the design and construction of advanced astronomical and spacecraft instrumentation, telescopic determination of the chemical and isotopic composition of icy surfaces, and spacecraft studies of the outer solar system. Of particular interest in his research are Triton, Pluto, Kuiper belt objects, and debris disks around nearby stars. BROWN, ROBERT (ca. 1818-?). Robert Brown, Alamo defender, was born around 1818 and arrived in Texas in October 1835, a single man. He is mentioned by William Barret Travis qv in a letter of February 25, 1836, as being one of the men who sallied forth from the Alamo to La Villita qv to burn huts that were affording cover to Mexican troops. Brown was sent out of the Alamo, probably as a courier, sometime later in the siege. He continued to serve the Texan forces during the revolution and guarded baggage and supplies at Harrisburg. Robert Blincoe was born in 1792. At four years old Blincoe was placed in St. Pancras Workhouse, London . He was later told that his family name was Blincoe but he never discovered what happened to his parents. At the age of six Robert was sent to work as a chimney boy. However, Ro bert was not a success and after a few months he was returned to St. Pancras Workhouse.
In 1799, Lamberts recruited Robert and eighty other boys and girls from St. Pancras Workhouse. The boys were to be instructed in the trade of stocking weaving and the girls in lacemaking at Lowdam Mill, situated ten miles from Nottingham . Blincoe completed his apprenticeship in 1813, worked as an adult operative until 1817, when he set up his own small cotton-spinning business. Blincoe married a woman called Martha in 1819.

Robert Brown
Scottish botanist and plant geographer, born December 21, 1773, Montrose, Angus, Scotland; died June 10, 1858, Soho Square, London, England.
Associated eponyms: Brownian movement Ceaseless, zigzag random movement of microscopic particles when suspended in liquid or gas. Biography: Robert Brown was the son of James Brown, a Scottish Episcopalian clergyman. He was educated at the Marischal College, Aberdeen, and studied medicine at Edinburgh University but did not obtain his degree. In 1895, by the age of twenty-one, he joined the Fifeshire Regiment of Fencibles as Ensign and Surgeon's Mate. While posted in Ireland, he spent much time studying German grammar and botanical documents. At that time he already knew that his true interest lay not in medicine but in botany. On a visit to London in October, 1798, to recruit for the regiment, Brown met the botanist Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820), president of the Royal Society. Banks allowed him the free use of his library and collections, and recommended Brown to the Admiralty for the post of naturalist aboard the 334 ton ship the Investigator. The ship was to embark on a surveying voyage along the northern and southern coasts of Australia under the command of Matthew Flinders (1774-1814). Brown ended his army service in 1800, and in July 18, 1801 sailed with the expedition. His salary was £420, at the time a generous sum. On board was also the talented draughtsman Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) after whom the genus Bauera was named. Robert brown was twenty-seven years old when they left England.

Brown, Robert
Robert Brown (1773-1858) A Scotsman who discovered the brownian movement of minute particles (1828), a phenomenon that provides a basis for demonstrating molecular motion. He later discovered the general occurrence of the nucleus in plant cells (1831). He first observed (1827) that pine trees and their kin have ovules (undeveloped seeds) and mature seeds that are naked (not protected by an ovary). He classified gymnosperms and separated them from true, flower-bearing angiosperms (1825). He discovered the minute areola (spaces) in pollen grains, which he regarded as points for the production of pollen tubes. Back
