Over 30 years after Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, Memphis and TV Judge Joe Brown unveiled new information on the murder weapon: the fatal bullets found in King does not match those found in the gun. The King family claims that Jowers, who owned a cafe that overlooked the Memphis motel, where King was shot to death, participated in an assassination plot that was allegedly hatched in his place of business. The suit is based largely on a 1993 television interview where Jowers, 73, claimed that mobsters offered him $100,000 to get King killed. According to the suit, Jowers was part of a plot that involved "other unknown conspirators" in King's slaying. Jowers' attorney agrees that there was a conspiracy to kill King. However, the defense claims that Jowers did not know King was the target when he became involved in the murder plot. Jowers also has said that Memphis police officers and the late Frank C. Liberto, a Memphis produce company operator, were also involved in the plot to kill King.

This site contains an ongoing collection of my work starting in 1991. There are currently 569 works on the website and new work is added weekly. You can also find some of my writings about art, and my poetry on this site. Although much of my work is for sale, I put this site together primarily to share images and ideas, so feel free to e-mail me with any comments or questions. Here's some pictures of my opening night March 2004 at the Delight Hamilton Gallery . On an important note, the prices in my database are outdated. This isn't bad news, in many cases I am lowering some of my favorites to be more consistant with the rest of the series, in a few cases, I need to raise them to compensate for recent framing etc.. Hopefully I'll get them updated soon. In the mean time, just give me an email and ask.

Zoe Fairhurst, James Brown Photograph taken at the time of James Brown's 75th Birthday concert 1998 James is a complete musician. He contributed music to the first revue staged by the Footlights Club in Cambridge after the war. He is a proficient organist and pianist. He is a very able composer who, while he has yet to make an impact in this field, will, ultimately, be recognised. In his teenage years he was drawn to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sullivan, German and Elgar. In his early adult years he delighted in Bach, Stravinsky, Walton and Bliss. Despite his catholic taste he admires the "wonderful clarity of purpose and the beautiful order, symmetry, colour and deep feeling of Webern." He also enjoys all melodists from Berlioz to Jerome Kern. But his favourite composer of the 20th Century is probably Messiaen. Mention must be made of a few of his works.

BROWN, JAMES MADISON (1839-1892). James Madison Brown, lawman and horseman, son of John Humphrey and Jane Ann Brown, was born in Alabama in 1839. The Browns, with several other families, settled permanently in what is now San Saba County, Texas, where John Brown helped establish the town of San Saba. James, the eldest son, grew up to be an excellent judge of horses and in his later years became wealthy from winning on the turf. During the Civil War qv he served as a minuteman under the command of W. R. Wood and later under his father's command. In 1869 he was probably one of the trail hands that drove a large herd from the San Saba region to Roswell, New Mexico Territory. In 1870 he resided in Washington County, where he had already established a reputation as a gambler. In 1872-73 he served as a private in the state police force. He joined Washington County Volunteer Militia Company A, commanded by Capt. Leander H. McNelly, qv and served from April 30 to November 30, 1875. During this time he also was establishing a reputation as a horseman; he raced successfully in Gonzales County as well as Travis County. Lee County, separated from Washington County in 1874, was still a frontier area and needed strong law enforcement officials. James McKeown was the new county's first sheriff, and on February 15, 1876, Brown was elected to take his place. He served in that office during a very lawless era and established a reputation for being an energetic sheriff. But his years were not without controversy. He was involved in several personal feuds as well as several killings. His most notable act in office was the legal hanging of noted outlaw William P. Longley.

    Brown, James
Brown, 1967 UPI/Corbis-Bettmann (b. May 3, 1933, Augusta, Ga., U.S.), American rhythm and blues vocalist and composer who achieved great popularity from the late 1950s through the 1970s. Growing up in poverty during the Depression, Brown first sang and danced on street corners for money. He later formed a trio, appearing at small clubs through the South. He gradually evolved a highly personal style, combining elements of the blues and gospel traditions with his own emotionally charged and highly rhythmic delivery, accented by his strong sense of showmanship. He first began recording successfully in 1956 with the hit single "Please, Please, Please." This song was followed by a string of other million-selling singles, including "I Can't Stand Myself," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "It's a Man's, Man's World," which brought him to a position of unchallenged preeminence in the field of rhythm and blues. Brown played a pioneering role in gaining the attention of white audiences for black popular music. In the 1970s and '80s Brown became increasingly concerned with encouraging young black people to acquire education and to develop pride in their heritage, consciously offering himself as an example of success through determination and hard work.

    Issue 44 Television Sportscasters (African-American)
Opportunities for African-American sportscasters have been extremely limited until recently. While studio analyst jobs have been available to former pro athletes who happen to be black, the top sports journalism jobs, such as play-by-play announcer, have overwhelmingly gone to white males. In 1989 CBS had two black play-by-play announcers and ABC and NBC had none. CBS sportscaster James Brown said at that time, "I firmly believe people hire in their own likeness, so that's what network executives always have done....All we're asking for is an opportunity to succeed and fail like everyone else." (1) The situation hadn't improved much by 1993. No African-American had yet been designated as a network's top play-by-play announcer. Said Brown, "In the studio, yes. There have been big strides. But No. 1 play-by-play is almost the same as being the quarterback. He's the traffic cop. That's what everybody who does play-by-play strives for. It hasn't ever happened. It's only right that it does. There are enough talented people out there. The talent pool is there to make it happen. It should happen." (2) Only in the past few years have sportscasters such as Greg Gumbel and Robin Roberts moved into truly prestigious network positions. Here are their profiles along with three others:

    Thought Experiments
    1. Examples of Thought Experiments
One of the most beautiful early examples (Lucretius, De Rerum Natura ) attempts to show that space is infinite: If there is a boundary to the universe, we can toss a spear at it. If the spear flies through, it isn't a boundary after all; if the spear bounces back, then there must be something beyond the supposed edge of space, a cosmic wall which is itself in space that stopped the spear. Either way, there is no edge of the universe; space is infinite. This example nicely illustrates many of the common features of thought experiments: We visualize some situation; we carry out an operation; we see what happens. It also illustrates their fallibility. (In this case we've learned how to conceptualize space so that it is both finite and unbounded.) Often a real experiment that is the analogue of a thought experiment is impossible for physical, technological, or just plain practical reasons; but this needn't be a defining condition of thought experiments. The main point is that we seem able to get a grip on nature just by thinking, and therein lies the great interest for philosophy. How is it possible to learn (apparently) new things about nature without new empirical data?

Churches of Christ JAMES A. GARFIELD. F. M. GREEN. JAMES A. GARFIELD. His mental equipment was of the first quality, and his mind was buttressed by a sensitive conscience and a profound moral and spiritual nature. Intellectually nothing was too prodigious for him to undertake. In his studies he went to the bottom of things. His mind was of a logical cast though in his analysis of questions he rarely ever used the syllogistic machinery laid down in the books; but facts were sought after and used with wonderful skill and almost endless patience. So careful was he in his search for facts that when finally presented in speech or on paper it was a rare man who disputed them. This [412] habit of careful study of all questions in which he became interested either by his relations to individuals, society, or to religious and political bodies, was with him to the end. The religious feature of his life was as marked as his intellectual ability was prominent. He became a. Christian when but little past his eighteenth birthday. He was baptized by William A. Lillie, whose name is yet honored on the Western Reserve, in Ohio, as a preacher of ability, and a man of gentle, Christ-like spirit, and from the time he entered the church until he died, his heart was faithful to his early vows. In 1857 Mr. Alanson Wilcox heard him on "The Material and the Spiritual." Full notes of that sermon have been published. His text was, "It is expedient that I go away; for if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." (John 16:7). It was a strong sermon, in which he developed the following propositions:
