James Justin Brown Online Gallery This site contains an ongoing collection of my work starting in 1991. There are currently 569 works on the website and new work is added weekly. You can also find some of my writings about art, and my poetry on this site. Although much of my work is for sale, I put this site together primarily to share images and ideas, so feel free to e-mail me with any comments or questions. Here's some pictures of my opening night March 2004 at the Delight Hamilton Gallery . On an important note, the prices in my database are outdated. Travel James Brown Biography, CDs and concert review (photograph: James Brown AVO Session 2000 Basel) For sheet music by James Brown click here Biography James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina, as an only child in 1933. His father was a filling station attendant. When James was four, his parents separated and he grew up in the brothel of his aunt, a poor woman in Augusta, Georgia. Brown left school in the seventh grade. He picked cotton, was a shoe-shine boy, washed cars and dishes and swept out stores. At the age of 16, he took part in an armed robbery and was caught breaking into a car. James was sentenced to eight to sixteen years' hard labor. He served a short period in the county jail before being transferred to juvenile work farms. He spent three years in a community home. The Famous Flames caught the attention of King Records and, in April 1956, they released the single Please, Please, Please Try Me Live At The Apollo , which he paid for himself since Syd Nathan did not want to advance money on a live record, made him a star. With the Famous Flames, now led by saxophonist J.C. Davis, he broke all concert records. Several months after its release, on June 29, 1963, the album entered the pop charts.

Search the GSJ Faces of Brown: James Stewart and Mark Sands by Dionne Montgomery You could say that James Stewart and Mark Sands (that's Stewart on the right and Sands on the left) are not typical candidates for this feature. But these faces see more and know more about where we work than many of us. Stewart, aka the FedEx guy, and Sands, aka the UPS guy, are Brown's go-to guys when it comes to shipping. No slight intended for other messengers, but between Stewart and Sands, they've put in 25 years on the Brown campus. To say they know this campus very well is an understatement. Both have delivery routes dedicated to the Brown campus. They know who moved to what department, what elevators to avoid, and what department has relocated. They have to in order to meet those demanding deadlines. But they don't just deliver packages or pick up that overnighter for you in a pinch; they deliver humor and wit with every stop. "Mark has even delivered my birthday cake," said Donna Silvia, positions coordinator for Human Resources. "He was holding the cake when I walked in the room and everyone yelled surprise. I was shocked." Each man is able to refer to each Brown department with a building name, an address, a campus box, and two former locations, and they have a mutual friendship and mutual respect for each other. "We have a friendly competition going on. I have a lot of respect for Mark and the job he does because I know what he has to deal with," said Stewart, who constantly picks at his brown-clad counterpart. "It's all in fun," said Sands.

James Brown Probably the single most popular black artist among blacks till the mid '70s, James Brown may very well have been the last vaudeville performer, with is high powered, histrionic, and intensely dramatic stage show. James Brown was perhaps the best known and clearly the most successful black entertainer of the Sixties and the early Seventies hey! ooh wait! ow! wow! ... yow!
