LOUISE BROOKS STUDIES
A Denishawn Image Gallery
Louise Brooks appeared with the Denishawn Dance Company in the early 1920's. That group - one of the first modern dance companies in United States, was founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn. It's early members included Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey and other important figures in the history of modern American dance. Presented here are a number of images of Denishawn from the years Brooks was a member. Ruth St. Denis and Denishawn Dancers in Ishtar of the Seven Gates

Quick Links Home Page Films Portraits On-Line Archive Bibliographies Tributes Site Map About the LBS A while back, I ran across a tantalizing review of Adolfo Bioy Casares' memoirs, Memorias: Infancia, adolescencia y como se hace un escritor . Bioy Casares, as you may know, is the Argentine author of A Plan for Escape The Dream of Heroes Diary of the War of the Pig (1969) and other novels and collections of short stories. He was also a great friend of and collaborator with Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentine short story writer. Borges called Bioy Casares one of the great writers of the 20th century. The Invention of Morel (1940) is considered Casares' masterpiece and one of the great works of Latin American fiction. Both Borges and Octavio Paz described this work as "perfect." In his memoirs (according to the review), Bioy Casares speaks of his "disillusionment over the decline of the screen career of one of his favorite actresses, Louise Brooks." As far as I can tell, this book has not been translated into English, so, I don't know how extensive Bioy Casares' comments about Brooks may be. Nevertheless, Melvin S. Arrington Jr. of the University of Mississippi thought it notable enough to mention Brooks in his review, which appeared in the Winter, 1995 issue of World Literature Today The character of Faustine, as depicted by Norah Borges de Torre

G. W. Pabst - for further reading
This page presents links, and a checklist of relevant books and articles, on the life and work of Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1885 - 1967). The intent of this page is to place Pabst's life and work in a larger context. However, emphasis is given to citations which include material on Louise Brooks and the two films Pabst made with the actress. G. W. Pabst had a long and illustrious career; along with Fritz Lang and F. W. Murnau - many consider Pabst one of the finest German directors of the 1920's and 1930's. For further information, see Liam O'Leary's three page entry on Pabst in the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (St. James Press, 1991). G.W. PABST: LINKS
