"To be, or not to bethat is the question"(Hamlet, III,i, 57). The most famous lines in English literature. But do you know the next 32 lines? All right, let's make this easier...the next 3? If so, congratulations, you can impress/annoy/confuse your friends and family. If not, study up and watch Kenneth Branagh's long, er...complete...full...wonderful version of Hamlet if you haven't already. Chances are, you have/are/will be studying Shakespeare's play in some sort of educational institution so what better way to learn it than with this glorious production? For once, Hamlet does not have an Oedipus complex nor does he live within the confines of a gothic castle complete with men in fluffy, white shirts and tights, although his Hamlet does sport "quite tight trousers". In fact, this movie was filmed in 70mm (sharper images) complementing the visually stunning interiors designed by Tim Harvey, and grand exteriors filmed on location at Blenheim Palace . Yes, the film is four hours long (four hours of Ken! For some that's a good enough incentive) but, as Ken says, it's "long in time, short in feel". Trust me, it's worth the time. And, now that it's on video, you can watch in slow motion, stretching the viewing experience to an unprecedented 8 hours or more! Not only is it an excellent interpretation of the play, it's also accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack by Patrick Doyle . Don't believe my completely unbiased opinion? Here's

Branagh, Kenneth,
Kenneth Branagh in the title role of Henry V Corbis-Bettmann in full KENNETH CHARLES BRANAGH (b. Dec. 10, 1960, Belfast, N.Ire., U.K.), Irish-born English stage and motion-picture actor, director, and writer who is best known for his film adaptations of Shakespearean plays. At the age of nine, Branagh moved with his family from Northern Ireland to London. He began acting in school plays and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1981. Six weeks later he made his professional stage debut. In 1984 he joined the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), where he received acclaim for his performances in Hamlet and Henry V . Often compared to Laurence Olivier , Branagh was noted for his magnetic and often whimsical performances. In 1987 he left the RSC to cofound the Renaissance Theatre Company, for which he served as actor, writer, and director. In 1989 Branagh brought Henry V to the screen. The movie received critical acclaim and Branagh was nominated for Academy Awards as best director and best actor. His costar in the movie, Emma Thompson, was an actress he had met while filming a television series. They were married in 1989 and appeared together in many film and stage productions.

Review Summary
M. Schreiner, Resident Henry V Scholar
This was Kenneth Branagh's first Shakespeare movie, a very successful war movie. Young King Henry V, having recently assumed the throne of England, is urged by the church to claim the crown of France. The French Dauphin sends him an insult, so he decides to go to war. he proves himself to be a brave and forthright leader, leaving the irresponsibilities of his youth behind, and leading the English to great victories at Harfleur and Agincourt. He also successfully woos the Princess of France. Really good and bloody battle scene.

33. Kenneth Branagh Revisits The 40s In Dead Again
Review by Deborah A. Levinson.

Dead Again
Kenneth Branagh revisits the 40s in Dead Again
DEAD AGAIN Directed by Kenneth Branagh. Starring Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, and Derek Jacobi. Now playing at the Loews Harvard Square. By DEBORAH A. LEVINSON KENNETH BRANAGH, the young British actor who was the driving force behind a lush, critically acclaimed version of Henry V , returns to film with Dead Again , a movie about as far from Shakespeare as one can get. Instead of paying homage to the Bard, in Dead Again Branagh pays homage to Hitchcock and the films of the 40s. Parts of Dead Again play like outtakes from Hitchcock's most famous works: the obsessive son-mother relationship of Psycho , the hypnotism (and Dali artwork) of Spellbound , the antique shop and dizzying tower shots of Vertigo . Memories of a 1948 murder are even shot in black and white in a style that recalls the films of that period. The Hitchcock tributes garnish a plot chock-full of the most ridiculous elements: reincarnation, hypnotism, Fate with a Capital F, amnesia, and bizarre modern art. Reincarnation stories, as a rule, are pretty silly, and this one is no exception. However, the characters are so compelling and the acting so fine that it is easy to suspend one's disbelief, and by the time some shocking revelations are made, it doesn't matter that the film is about two people reliving past lives. Branagh plays Mike Church, an LA detective hired to figure out the identity of an amnesic woman (Emma Thompson) who wakes up screaming every night. Aided by Franklin Madison (Derek Jacobi), an antiques dealer and part-time hypnotist who uses his skill to coerce subjects into revealing the locations of vintage furniture, Church and "Grace," as the detective names the woman, discover that they are somehow involved in a murder that took place over 40 years ago.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
The romantic comedy movie starring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson
"The play is one of the greatest romantic comedies ever written. Comic, lusty and full blooded. In it Shakespeare produces prose and poetry that make the little hairs rise on the back of the neck." - Kenneth Branagh
Much Ado About Nothing Review: The Look
Much Ado About Nothing ' has to be one of my favourite films. Director/star Kenneth Branagh really accomplished what he set out to do, bringing the true joys of Shakespeare to a wider public. This particular play, and movie, has a universal appeal, interweaving romance, comedy and intrigue. The storyline is still relevant today, so much so that it's easy to forget that you're watching Shakespeare." [More
Much Ado About Nothing Review: The Actors
"When Branagh plays Benedick in "Much Ado About Nothing", I forget that he is speaking Shakespeare . This isn't the stilted "hammy" renditions that make audiences groan, instead he makes every phrase sound natural and not out of place in modern conversation."

KENNETH BRANAGH FAQ Updated November 12, 2003
Compiled and maintained, not very well, by Marilyn Mosher Kenneth Branagh starred in the David Mamet play Edmond at London's National theatre from July 10 to October 4, 2003, and for four of those performances I was lucky enough to be in the audience. I will admit that I had misgivings about watching this play, as it seemed very dark, violent, nasty and hopeless when I read it. Mr Branagh's performance, however, backed up by a wonderful cast and perfect set, somehow made the play humourous (in parts), touching, and even, in the end, peaceful. How does he do that? The first time I saw Mr Branagh on stage was in Sheffield, England, in the Crucible Theatre's wonderful production of Richard III , which ran from March 13 to April 10, 2002, directed by Michael Granage and starring Kenneth Branagh as King Richard. The three evenings I spent in that sold-out theatre, surrounded by friends who had travelled many miles to get there, were one of the highlights of my life. Kenneth played a young and attractive Richard, who made you laugh even while you were appalled at his behavior. The whole cast was wonderful, as were the direction and approach, the lighting, the lovely and creative costumes, and everything else. Thank you, Mr Branagh, for going back on the stage. I've never been prouder to be a fan. (Please film this play!) NEWS
Kenneth Branagh's short film Listening is playing at various film festivals around the world. The film stars Frances Barbour and Paul McGann, whose charactors meet at a "silent" retreat. While in England I saw this at the Bristol Short Film Festival and found it excellent. Can't wait to see it again. It was a film that led to a lot of conversation during the train ride back to London. My only complaint is that the fascinating credits need to be slowed down!
