By Laura Sessions Stepp On Television, Safer Sex And More Of It Yes, there's more sex than there used to be on TV shows that teenagers watch, but it's a new kind of sex it is safer sex, with more mentions of consequences and abstinence, and more relationship sex, as opposed to one-night stands. As seen on recent TV: A high school senior on a daytime soap opera tells her mom she isn't ready for intercourse with her boyfriend. A college freshman in a nighttime drama stops by a Kmart to pick up condoms on his way to a first date. A rapper on another drama, sent to a hospital after a fight, learns that he has tested positive for the HIV virus. Could it be that television producers are coming to believe that it's okay for their characters to say "Not yet" to sex, or "Not without protection," or "Oh my God, why did I do that?" That's what a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, an independent health analysis organization, suggests. Among 1,100 shows of the last TV season that depicted or talked about intercourse, 26 percent made some mention of safe sex nearly double the proportion of a similar Kaiser analysis four years ago. Dale Kunkel, communications professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a team of researchers examined network and cable shows. They discovered an almost equal rise in the three messages they looked for: waiting to have sex, taking precautions with sex, or getting in trouble because of sex.

Who Are ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Women? Alpha Kappa Alpha women are college presidents, deans, directors of Fortune 500 companies, judges, mayors, and members of Congress, state legislatures, city councils, and school boards. [We] are rural and urban teachers, counselors, and role models. An Alpha Kappa Alpha woman made the calculations for the automatic control system design of the first orbital flight.
Members are poets, musicians, artists, and dancers. They are fighters for civil and human rights. They are the strong mothers and wives of brave men who have carried burdens in the heat of the day. Sometimes they are kinfolksmothers, daughters, sistersbut often they are themselves the leaders of catalysts. They make history whenever they come together.
There are no average or even typical Alpha Kappa Alpha women. They fit no common physical descriptions or economic characteristics, yet they are all the samethese women who wear the twenty pearls. You can identify them by the smiles on their faces and the love in their eyes. Beautiful Alpha Kappa Alpha women are young, mature, matriarchal, elderly, and venerable. Life polishes neophytes until they are shining silver stars, who then mellow into the glowing radiance of golden sorors.

Half-sisters Mona and Dee Dee have only one thing in common - their father. Growing up separately, these two virtual strangers suddenly become neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building and experience the challenges of sisterhood for the first time.
Mona, a budding music executive, was raised by her single mother, Phyllis, to be an independent woman who does things in her own free-spirited and sometimes sardonic style. By contrast, younger sister Dee Dee is a privileged honor-roll college student who grew up in a two-parent home, but searches for her own identity out of the shadow of her overbearing mother, Big Dee Dee.
Now in their twenties, these two vastly contrasting women are discovering the advantages and joys that the special bond of sisterhood offers. But their relationship is not without its problems, as they often clash on everything from morals to money to men. Meanwhile Spencer, Mona’s best friend, becomes the conscience of the group and helps build a bridge between the women.

Panel: TV Ignores Minorities at Nation's, Industry's Peril
    By Lynn Elber
    AP TELEVISION WRITER
BEVERLY HILLS - The bottom line could be at stake in the worsening treatment of minorities on television, an industry panel said. Television depictions reinforce the social segregation that is an increasing national problem, said Geraldo Rivera, who participated in the Hollywood Radio and Television Society panel on Monday. Nely Galan, president of the Hispanic-oriented Telemundo Network, said television ignores the way race plays itself out in real life. ``When you see shows on TV they're either black shows or white shows, and that's not how we live in America,'' Ms. Galan said. Whoopi Goldberg, the panel's moderator, said TV is regressing in how and how much it depicts minorities. Of 115 shows on the six major broadcast networks, only 18 feature black casts or lead characters, she said. George Gerbner, a Temple University telecommunications professor and television researcher, said more minority characters were featured in shows canceled in 1998 than there were in series remaining on the air. Ms. Galan called multiracial images important to viewers, especially young ones: ``I think a lot of our children's selfesteem comes from seeing themselves depicted positively on the medium that is society's most important.''

CBS Slate To Return Focus On 25-54 Demographic By Gary Levin NEW YORK (Variety) - Despite the hard lessons learned by the networks in trotting out 42 new series last fall, CBS Entertainment president Leslie Moonves expects much the same to happen next season. "There's still going to be the same problem," Moonves told reporters Thursday after unveiling the Eye web's fall development slate to nearly 400 advertisers and financial analysts. "There'll still be 35 of them." Still, he added, the networks "will look at more diversity; people are moving back to where they were" before the disastrous 1995-96 season, when everyone aped leader NBC and programmed for the same 18-49-year-old urban audience. For its part, CBS now plans to refocus on the 25-54 crowd and "especially right in the middle of that target," said CBS network president Jim Warner. "This is where the audience is growing, and it is CBS' strength. It is our hitting zone." Moonves pointed to recent ratings rebounds along with new commitments for series with Bill Cosby and Ted Danson as evidence of the "cautious optimism at CBS these days. Living through the disappointments of the last season has not been easy, but we feel like we've stopped the bleeding and have begun taking baby steps in the right directions." Season-to-date ratings are down 15%, however, and only one of CBS' 11 freshman series is likely at this point to get a renewal: "Almost Perfect," the Nancy Travis/Kevin Kilner sitcom recently moved to Mondays.
