Rock's Heathen Speaks
Interview with David Bowie
June 16, 2002
If David Bowie, whose recording career in rock music stretches back to 1964, had followed in the footsteps of so many of his own contemporaries, we might have written him off more than a decade ago. But with recent albums that have dug deep into outsider art (Outside) and tapped into the mainline of state-of-the-art club music (Earthling) , Bowie, who recently turned 55 this past January, is anything but a shadow of his former self.
And to prove this point better than anything Bowie has just released his 25th studio release entitled, Heathen - a dark, yet engaging album that tugs at the hem of his own past, while looking ahead towards a somewhat uncertain future.
Here Livewire presents David Bowie candidly discussing his new album, heathenism, as well as some old familiar friends, Ziggy's muse and his own inner ghosts.
How did you and Tony Visconti get back together again?
Bowie: Tony Visconti and I had been wanting to work together again for a few years now. Both of us had fairly large commitments and for a long time we couldn't see a space in which we could get anything together. As spring came around, last year, things began to ease up. I told Mark Plati and my band that I was going to disappear for a while and put this thing together with Tony. They were very understanding, they've worked with me long enough to know that we would be back together again before long.
That's when it all came together. I went over and stayed at Tony's place for a while and we talked and played around in his home studio to get a feel of what I was after. Ironically, the first piece that we recorded there in demo form and were excited about is one song that never made it to the final list. However, it was our starting point.

178. David Bowie Interview: The Dame Speaks (NY Rock)
A david bowie discography (albeit an abbreviated one) from the mouth of bowie himself.
http://www.nyrock.com/db_new.htm
The following is a David Bowie discography of sorts (albeit an abbreviated one) from the mouth of Bowie himself. February 1997 Bowie: "I think that [Ziggy] would probably be fairly shocked that, one, I was still alive and that, two, I seem to have regained some sense of rationality about life and existence." Bowie: "That was the first time that I played all the instruments myself on an album. I had just broken up the Spiders and didn't really want to entrust my music to another set of musicians at the time. So I tried everything myself on the guitar, drums, saxophone and synthesizers. And so it has a peculiarly idiosyncratic style. I find it very endearing, kind of remote and a bit scary." Bowie: "They airbrushed the genitalia from the dog. It was by a French artist called Guy Peellaert, who was extraordinary. He put out a book called Rock Dreams in that period, which was a great take on his vision of rock artists. Unfortunately, that particular dog, the Diamond Dog, got castrated. It got returned now that it's out on Rykodisc he's with equipment." Bowie: "'Rebel, Rebel' is just for me the funniest song. I can't, I just can't conceive how I wrote that now. I mean, I really must have felt that at the time but... Hot tramp, I love you so, don't give me grief. I mean it's really it's so flippant."

179. David Bowie At The Garden With Special Guests (NY Rock)
david bowie and his contingency of superstar guests blew the big steel doors off of Madison Square Garden on January 9, 1997 during his 50th birthday bash. The supporting cast included such luminaries as Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Robert Smith of the Cure, and Lou Reed.

The only damper on the show was the venue itself. There's something very synthetic and strange about the Garden. Maybe it's the sheer size of the place intimate it is not. Or perhaps it's the security guards who prowl the bleachers looking for any possible breeches of the Garden's no-smoking policy. They do such a good job, in fact, that it appeared Bowie himself was the only one who managed to enjoy a comfortable smoke during the course of the night. All this notwithstanding, the show was clearly a knockout. One really has to see Bowie live to appreciate him. He's a startling blend of man and woman, performing a startling blend of rock and cabaret. He has a presence that captivates and seduces. Although his movements do appear choreographed, they are executed smoothly nonetheless, with a sense of timing that is nearly perfect. During the opening number, "Little Wonder" (from the forthcoming
