James had just come from voting for himself in a contentious election for Mayor of Newark, in which federal poll observers had to be called in to monitor the race. James beat his opponent, freshmen Newark Councilman Cory Booker , 56 to 43 percent, in a heated campaign that spotlighted the generation divide within the black community and how this divide will become a prevalent issue within the African American community for years to come. This could be seen in the make-up of the two candidates. Booker, a 33-year-old highly educated Ivy League black politician? an upstart "New Democrat," and James a 66-year-old Newark civil rights pioneer. While Booker had just moved to the Newark area 6 years before, James has been a Newark resident all of his life. Booker advocated the use of school vouchers to get black students out of failing schools, decried government corruption and leading up into the campaign, he had made headlines for himself by holding a hunger strike outside a drug-infested housing project, and living in a trailer in front of some of the Newarks worst neighborhoods, to draw attention to the crime in the areas.

Washington was gaining prominence, was also a difficult time for African Americans. The vote proved elusive and civil rights began to vanish through court action. Lynching, racial violence, and slavery's twin children peonage and sharecropping arose as deadly quagmires on the path to full citizenship. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, the federal government virtually turned a deaf ear to the voice of the African American populace. Yet in this era blacks were educated in unprecedented numbers, hundreds received degrees from institutions of higher learning, and a few, like W.E.B. DuBois and Carter G. Woodson, went on for the doctorate. While only a small percentage of the black population had been literate at the close of the Civil War, by the turn of the twentieth century, the majority of all African Americans were literate. The Library of Congress houses the papers of three presidents of Tuskegee Institute: Booker T. Washington, Robert Russa Moton, and Frederick Douglass Patterson, and other important manuscripts and photographs relating to the establishment, operations, aspirations, and success of historically black colleges and universities.

Obituaries The N.C. Industrial Commission mourns the passing of former Chairman James J. Booker of Winston-Salem and attorney and lobbyist Alan J. Miles of Raleigh: Judge James J. Booker Former N.C. Industrial Commission Chairman James J. Booker died September 3 in Winston-Salem. In 1989, Governor James G. Martin appointed Mr. Booker as the first Republican Resident Superior Court judge in Forsyth County. In 1991, Governor Martin named Judge Booker as Chairman of the N.C. Industrial Commission in Raleigh. He served as Chairman (1991-93) and Commissioner (1993-95) before returning to Winston-Salem. Born January 24, 1926 in Apex, NC, Judge Booker was a graduate of Duke University Law School and a naval veteran of World War II. He served as special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City (1951-54), and practiced law in Winston-Salem for about 32 years. His survivors include his wife, Anne Elmore Booker; two children, Dorothy Booker Moore of Gastonia and James J. Booker, Jr. of Charlotte; and four grandchildren. The memorial service will start at 11 a.m. Friday, September 8, at Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Those wishing to make memorials may make them to Knollwood Baptist Church or Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. The roster reflects only those names which started with the outfit in 1861 and does not include later recruits from Houston County as the war progressed. A company was expected to maintain full-size in the aftermath of casualties and there were a LOT of casualties and many new recruits in this regiment. If your veteran from this company is not llisted, it may be because they became a part of the unit later in the war. Four regiments accompanied Col Sibley in the New Mexico campaign: 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles 4th Regiment Texas Mounted Vol 5th Regiment Texas Mounted Vol 7th Texas Mounted Vol In addition to the Houston Co company with the 7th Texas Mounted Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, Houston County also supplied a company for the 4th Regiment, and a company for the 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles.
