61. Poets Q&A
eavan boland It s an interesting question, but hard to answer. Any regrets? eavan boland I think I have a fairly steady view of it.
http://www.smartishpace.com/home/poetsqa/boland_answers.htm
Alice Giles from Nashville: You've spoken in previous interviews about Irish poetry's debt and continued connection to oral tradition. In a terribly simplified manner, the development of language could be charted from the oral to the printed to the electronic. What sort of effects do you think that electronic media (e.g., the web) will have on Irish poets? What effects might the web have on your poetry?
EAVAN BOLAND:
Brain T. from San Diego:
What do you think of your earlier work? By this I mean, do you like it as much as your later books? Any regrets?
EAVAN BOLAND: I think I have a fairly steady view of it. Having said that, I think there's always a charged relation between a writer and their early work. At least there is in my case. It's hard not to see the flaws, the awkwardness and feel somewhat the same as when you see an early photograph of yourself. You thinkwhy did I wear that? How did I let myself look at the camera like that? But it's a misplaced self-consciousness: You aren'tand you never will be againthe person who wrote those poems. The most vivid evidence you get of that is when you're putting together a Selected Poems, as I did some years ago. You have to make a conscious effort to leave the poems alone that should be left alone. There's a temptation to take poems that you wrote in your twenties and give them the smoothness or understanding you have in your forties. And it can become a kind of forgery.

At the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library
Welcome to C.W. Post Library 's rare book holdings of "Irish Contemporary Poets." We are indebted to the generosity of the late Winthrop Palmer who has made this possible. Mrs. Palmer most especially desired the Library to develop its collection in the areas of poetry, and Irish and French literatures. The Special Collections Department of the Library has adhered to this initial focus. This catalog is concerned with the writings, including translations, of 65 Irish men and women who are primarily poets. Whenever these writers produce a work in another format it is so noted within brackets. A poet is "contemporary" whose works are published inclusively, or almost so, during the second half of the 20th Century. Translations are arranged after the poet's original works, and collaborations are so noted. The writings of these poets found in various collections and periodicals will be forthcoming in another holdings list. So, stay tuned. We welcome your comments and questions. This Moment
Eavan Boland
A neighbourhood.
At dusk. Things are getting ready
to happen
out of sight. Stars and moths.
And rinds slanting around fruit. But not yet. One tree is black.
One window is yellow as butter. A woman leans down to catch a child
who has run into her arms
this moment. Stars rise.
Moths flutter.
Apples sweeten in the dark. from In a Time of Violence

The DIA Arts Foundation, way west on 22nd Street in New York's new Chelsea arts hub, hosted Eavan Boland and Adrienne Rich, Friday evening, May 9 at 7:30 pm. The readings are held in a large pure white gallery space. Many tech guys with walkie-talkies, elegant keepsake programs with poem broadsides tipped in (designed by Sherrie Levine), and brilliant intros by Series Coordinator Brighde Mullins. The space seats 250 all sold ($5) by 7:15. Eavan Boland is the model for poet in the next millennium. The first Irish woman poet to surface, she flips the classic/romantic mode that has been poetry's underlying conceit woman as object/subject to woman as Maker. Her poems rip the words from the text of history to reveal the face of the faceless seethe of human beings on whose bodies power has built roads to nowhere. The shaman resides in the body of a woman, a mother, a wife, a teacher only insofar as to redefine the role of the spiritual for a new culture: eyes open to the trickery of the tongue which lashes away in the language of the oppressor. In her strong beauty we hear of:

eavan boland Wednesday, April 26, 7:45 pm "Boland has emerged as one of the best poets in Ireland." Denis Donoghue, The New York Review of Books Universally acknowledged as the preeminent female poet of her native Ireland, Eavan Boland was born in Dublin in 1944 and has published nine volumes of poetry. She made her American debut with Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990, followed by In a Time of Violence , which explored what she called "the history of silences: the unspoken, the unwritten, the forgotten names, invisible chronicles." More recently, The Lost Land (1998) explores a series of metaphors for life's moments of transition and transformation, as well as, literally, the Ireland she has left behind. But the painful transitions are necessary, as a poem to her daughter, "The Blossom," suggests: Then holds out a dawn-soaked hand to me
whose fingers I counted at birth years ago.

Distances by Eavan Boland

What We Lost by Eavan Boland
Love
By Eavan Boland Dark falls on this mid-western town
where we once lived when myths collided.
Dusk has hidden the bridge in the river
which slides and deepens to become the water
the hero crossed on his way to hell. Not far from here is our old apartment.
We had a kitchen and an Amish table.
We had a view. And we discovered there love had the feather and muscle of wings and had come to live with us, a brother of fire and air. We had two infant children one of whom was touched by death in this town and spared: and when the hero was hailed by his comrades in hell their mouths opened and their voices failed and there is no knowing what they would have asked about a life they had shared and lost. I am your wife. It was years ago. Our child was healed. We love each other still. Across our day-to-day and ordinary distances we speak plainly. We hear each other clearly.

THE IRISH POETRY PAGE: POETS
BOLAND, EAVAN
The Oral Tradition
I was standing there
at the end of a reading
or a workshop or whatever,
watching people heading
out into the wheather, only half-wondering
what becomes of words,
the brisk herbs of language,
the fragrances we think we sing,
if anything. We were left behind
in a firelit room
in which the colour scheme crouched well down - golds, a sort of dun a distressed ochre - and the sole richness was in the suggestion of a texture like the low flax gleam that comes off polished leather. Two women were standing in shadow, one with her back turned. Their talk was a gesture, an outstreched hand. They talked to each other and words like 'summer' 'birth' 'great-grandmother' kept pleading with me, urging me to follow. 'She could feel it coming' - one of them was saying - 'all the way there, across the fields at evening and no one there, God help her 'and she had on a skirt of cross-woven linen and the little one kept pulling at it.
