Mel Blanc's Obituary This is the obituary of Mel Blanc that ran in the "Los Angeles Times" July 11, 1989. There are a number of interesting facts and stories about him contained within. Mel Blanc, the voice of Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Barney Rubble, Daffy Duck and countless other animated vertebrates, died Monday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 81 and had been hospitalized since May 19 suffering from heart disease and related medical problems, said hospital spokesman Ron Wise. With Blanc when he died at 2:30 p.m. were his wife Estelle and son Noel, who now does most of his father's voices. Known as "The Man of 1,000 Voices," Blanc was virtually never seen on the silver screen during the golden era of Merrie Melodies cartoons. Yet the myriad permutations of his acrobatic vocal cords have remained instantly recognizable by children of all ages around the globe for more than 50 years. Among the many lines he repeatedly uttered that arguably rival those of Shakespeare in terms of familiarity, if not intellectual depth: "Eh . . . what's up, Doc?" through the lips of the wiseacre hare, Bugs Bunny; "I tawt I taw a putty tat," from the tart-tongued canary Tweety, and "SSSSSsssuffering SSSSSuccotash," courtesy of Sylvester the sloppy cat. Not to mention Woody Woodpecker's signature laugh ("Hee, hee, heh, hah, ho. Hee, hee, heh, hah, ho"); both the laconic train conductor ("Anaheim, Azusa and Cuc-a-monga") and sputtering Maxwell auto of Jack Benny radio and TV show fame, and, of course, the stutter-strewn meanderings of Porky the wistful pig.

MEL BLANC
Born: Died:
Job Description:
Voice actor
Worked in: Animated cartoons and radio
Noted for: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Woody Woodpecker, Barney Rubble, etc. etc. Woody Woodpecker. The amazingly versatile voice actor was responsible for a lot more characters than just Woody. Others of that approximate vintage include Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester Pussycat and of course, Bugs Bunny. On radio, Blanc's roles included Pancho (The Cisco Kid's sidekick), Sad Sack, and Jack Benny's ancient automobile. It would not be much of an exaggeration to state that Mel Blanc invented the profession of cartoon voice acting. Before 1936, when he joined Warner Bros., voices tended to be done by whoever happened to be handy. Popeye, for example, was voiced by animator Jack Mercer, and Mickey Mouse, at first, by Walt Disney Tweety Bird, and others, credited Blanc with having raised the standards of animation art, by showing them all what the form was capable of. Melvin Jerome Blank was born May 30, 1908, in San Francisco, and grew up in Portland, OR. (He changed the spelling of his last name at age 16.) He showed an early interest in the sounds of people's voices, studying and practicing the various accents of his ethnic neighbors and playing them back to his teachers and classmates in the form of jokes. This gave him a taste for applause, and set him on the road to fame. Immediately upon graduating high school, he got a steady gig on a local radio show, "The Hoot Owls". It was the first of several jobs in radio and vaudeville. Right about when the movies were starting to talk, he lit out for Hollywood.

25. Mel Blanc
By Mark Evanier. POV Online The great skill of mel blanc was as an actor It is one thing to affect a funny voice quite another to mold a coherent, believable characterization with it and to wring every drop of humor out of every line.
http://povonline.com/cols/COL133.htm
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 4/25/97 When Mel Blanc passed away, the folks at Warner Brothers ran a touching double-truck color ad showing Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam and a few others, all with heads bowed and voices stilled. They, along with the Flintstones' Barney Rubble, were the most famous of his much publicized "thousand voices." In truth, Mel probably didn't have a thousand voices or even a hundred. But he had plenty and an amazing percentage of them gave breath to classic cartoon characters in very funny films. The great skill of Mel Blanc was as an actor: It is one thing to affect a funny voice quite another to mold a coherent, believable characterization with it and to wring every drop of humor out of every line. He had to be good. When he wasn't doing cartoons, he was dashing from mike to mike in the studios that broadcast the top network comedy radio programs. Appearing on The Jack Benny Program, as Mel did for a couple of decades, was like playing second for the Yankees at their prime. Mel was the first great cartoon voice actor and, in many ways, the best. Daws Butler perhaps had superior technique, and Paul Frees may have been more versatile but Mel was the guy who made it an art. He showed everyone how it should be done, back when nobody knew how it should be done. There are around fifty good reasons why those classic WB cartoons will live forever, and Mel Blanc is at least a dozen of those reasons.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 12/10/99 Boy, I hope you people wanna hear about cartoon voices. If not, I'm going to bore you silly with this column and next week's sequel. I know some of you are interested. 167 weeks ago, I did a piece on the cartoon voices, with emphasis on how one might beat the rather formidable odds against getting a job doing them. It is, to date, the POV most requested by those who either missed or mislaid it and want a copy. Some requests have come from folks who aspire to become cartoon voice artists. Others are from actors established in that field, seeking something they can hand out so they don't have to explain it for the eight-zillionth time. (That should tip you off as to what the competition is like...) I heard from a lot of cartoon fans who, like me, have always been fascinated about those speak for our favorite characters. I grew up loving the sounds and sensibilities of folks like Mel Blanc, Daws Butler, June Foray and Don Messick. I was very proud that I eventually got to know and, God help us, direct those people. Actually, I became a cartoon voice director for a simple reason, which I'll get to in some future installment. This time out, we have some history to wade through... As we all know, the first commercially-released cartoon with sound was
