eric blair s Hundredth Birthday eric blair was born on June 25th,1903, in Motahari, in the English colony then known as Bengal.

Eric Blair's Hundredth Birthday He wrote nine novels, countless essays, innumerable literary reviews, and several important pamphlets. He was a dedicated correspondent, a tireless advocate for the working poor, and a lifelong opponent of totalitarianism in every form. He fought on the side of the Left in the Spanish Civil War, and was instrumental in publicizing to the world the actual truth of what happened there, perhaps single-handedly preserving the truth from those who tried to suppress it. He was simultaneously a socialist committed to the nationalization of English industry and an equally committed (if ambivalent) English patriot, who spent a substantial portion of World War II working as a propagandist for the BBC. He was an impassioned defender of the English language, and spent his life struggling against those who would corrupt or debase it for ideological purposes. Two of his novels are among the finest of the 20th Century, and a large number of his essays on matters of politics and language are as trenchant and relevant today as the day they were written. An enduring testament to his legacy is that his novels can be appreciated for their crystal-clear English as much as their message (an assessment that would have pleased Blair, who thought that craft and message were both important). This is fortunate, because a large portion of his legacy is rooted in the fact that many, many people have tried to co-opt his writing to speak on their behalf: civil libertarians, foes of Communism / socialism / capitalism, grammarians, and ideologues of all stripes.

Research Interests
DNA tumour viruses: Entry into cells and evasion of the immune system The small DNA tumour viruses (adenoviruses, papillomaviruses, SV40 and polyomaviruses) have proved to be important in the study of cell transformation, cell cycle control and tumour formation. In recent years, the adenoviruses have been exploited as potential vectors in gene therapy for inherited diseases such as cystic fibrosis and cancer. Human adenoviruses (see Figure 1) enter cells by attachment of the projecting fibre proteins to cell surface receptors. We have been studying the expression of a major cell surface receptor, CAR, that admits adenoviruses into susceptible cells. Engineering of CAR may improve entry of adenoviruses designed to deliver therapeutic genes into cells, providing benefits for gene therapy. We are also interested in using therapeutic adenoviruses to stimulate antigen-presenting cells (dendritic cells) in humans to reject cancer cells.

May 19th is national gas boycott day. With gas prices on the rise, something must be done to send a message to the gas companies. If no one in America buys gas on the 19th the gas companies will lose an estimated $45 MILLION dollars! If you're not happy with paying over $2.00/gallon please do not buy gas on May 19th. Please re-post this so that it will be able to reach as many people across the country as possible. 4 Comments Comment on this Sunday, May 16th, 2004 11:06 pm

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
