By Chris Colin new, Before her recent and biggest fame she verged on making the Oscars different, verged on making Lars von Trier's film "Dancer in the Dark" She lived a long, quiet life there until she was 11, at which point she decided things were too slow and she'd become a great singer. So she did. With five years of music school under her belt, she entered a contest in 1977 and won a record contract. Her stepfather played guitar on the album, and it was soon a hit. Listen to her translation of "Fool on the Hill" it's the cutest Icelandic cover of a Beatles tune you'll hear. She was precocious and lovable, and the record company positioned her to be a child star, Iceland's own Jackson 5 squeezed into a Gudmundsdottir 1. Instead, the 11-year-old, who comes from a working-class family, said no thank you. She slipped back out of the spotlight and stayed away for years. It was a hobby, she says of the internationally successful edgy guitar band. They offered a refrain heard from a lot of good young bands: We can't believe we're making it. Apparently by accident, the Sugarcubes informed the world that Iceland, in fact, existed, and that it could produce a hit pop record. It could even do so while one of the singers tended to her young son. There were MTV videos and extensive tours.

"Sometimes the worse things get, the need to be happy is so big that the songs become happier," she was quoted in the New York Times . "The times when I wasn't so happy, I would have the fiercest highs. And then when I am overall satisfied, the peaks are not so sharp." It's like the beauty of a Greek or Shakespearian tragedy. To feel extreme joy, extreme pain is needed; it's the idea of yin-yang in the form of music. Selmasongs is the companion album to the film Dancer in the Dark directed by Danish born Lars von Trier, who is best known for his film, Breaking the Waves Dancer , won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival this year, despite the boos from the audience. Now the hype for the film and music has skyrocketed, with several articles in the New York Times and a full-length review in the New Yorker . New Yorkers are the lucky ones who got to watch Dancer in the Dark the opening night of the New York Film Festival last Friday.

BJORK - Vespertine Related Artists: Tricky, Kid Loco, Lamb Suggested Listening Activity: Getting ready for a bed Having trouble falling asleep? Forget the sleeping pills, just put on Bjork’s latest release Vespertine and you will have little trouble drifting off. After listening to Bjork’s new CD the best word to describe it is boring. The songs, for the most part, sound very similar to each other and it is difficult to differentiate one track from the next. Missing from the CD are the caliber of singles such as Big Time Sensuality, Army of Me, and Enjoy to name but a few. Sadly enough, there are no songs on Vespertine that would make one want to get up and move the way those earlier singles did. However, despite the initial disappointment the album may engender for long term Bjork fans, there are a few good tracks that are worth hearing. “An Echo, A Stain” and the opening track “Hidden Place”, are the better songs on the CD. As well, Track 10 starts off with a good intro beat and finishes off just as strong. It is questionable, though, whether or not these tracks would be considered the strongest ones on an earlier Bjork album. If it is any consolation, Bjork’s voice is still as unique and sweet sounding as ever, although she doesn’t seem to be utilizing the full range of her vocal capabilities on this album. Perhaps Vespertine will take more than a few listens to appreciate, which might happen, only if it wasn’t so easy to lose interest in the CD halfway through and turn it off.
