Jorge Carrera Andrade
The Editors of The Drunken Boat are pleased to present an extensive introduction to the well-known Ecuadorian poet, Jorge Carrera Andrade. This issue contains a selection of Andrade's poetry translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown. by Steven Ford Brown
I cannot remember on another occasion finding a place so clear and free of the torment of the spirit that has now become our daily bread. The images of Jorge Carrera Andrade are so extraordinarily clear, so connected to the primitive I imagine I am... participating in a vision already lost to the world. It is a place melancholy but grand.
— William Carlos Williams
Generally forgotten by American literary critics and anthologists, Ecuadorian Jorge Carrera Andrade (1902-1978) has long been considered by Latin America critics to be one of their most important poets. A country the size of Nevada, Ecuador is bordered by the dense rainforest of the Amazon on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The country interior includes both lush farmland and the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and snow-capped mountains of the Andes. It's a country of startling contrasts. This is where Jorge Carrera Andrade grew up.

See, I can't tell if this is intentional or not.* But either way, it's really cute.
From McSweeney's Lists Today:
2. Using the fraise "Homey don't play that" when slaying the emperor in Gladiator.
"Homey don't play that" is my new favorite kind of French strawberry.
*Seriously, is there some "fraise" reference completely going over my head? That'd be oft-precedented. Because that's not like a minor typo. Help.

Hi! This is Elsa, calling from the Georgia Shakespeare Festival!
I'd like to tell you about our ammmmmmaaaaaaazzzzzzing 2003 season!

Have you ever been to the Georgia Shakespeare Festival before?Well, you don't know what you're missing!
They've never been. So, some random person calling them on the phone is going to convince them that they need to see some Shakespeare. Bright! Smile! Please don't hang up! This summer, we'll start our season off with Shakespeare's romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Just like Ross and Rachel on Friends, everyone knows that Beatrice and Benedick should be together... except them!

III. Religion and the American Revolution
R eligion played a major role in the American Revolution by offering a moral sanction for opposition to the Britishan assurance to the average American that revolution was justified in the sight of God. As a recent scholar has observed, "by turning colonial resistance into a righteous cause, and by crying the message to all ranks in all parts of the colonies, ministers did the work of secular radicalism and did it better." Ministers served the American cause in many capacities during the Revolution: as military chaplains, as penmen for committees of correspondence, and as members of state legislatures, constitutional conventions and the national Congress. Some even took up arms, leading Continental troops in battle. The Revolution split some denominations, notably the Church of England, whose ministers were bound by oath to support the King, and the Quakers, who were traditionally pacifists. Religious practice suffered in certain places because of the absence of ministers and the destruction of churches, but in other areas, religion flourished.
