HOUSE UNDER SNOW
Jill Bialosky

Harvest/Harcourt, Inc.
Fiction
ISBN: 0156027461
Readers of HOUSE UNDER SNOW won't be surprised to learn that author Jill Bialosky is a poet. Her prose is elegant. It rings in your ears long after you've closed the book cover. The story, which details the life of a young girl struggling to find herself in a house with two sisters and a widowed mother, is well paced, carefully planned, expertly executed.
Initially readers accustomed to over-written prose may stumble on the gentle word choices, the subtle nuances employed by this author. They may question the audible distance created between the main characters and the reader. But patience is rewarded. A story that operates on many planes, HOUSE UNDER SNOW explores the relationships that women develop, inherit and pass on to their children. It prompts readers - both men and women - to pause and question, even examine the role to which they were born. Alternating between an adolescent Anna and her younger naïve self, Bialosky delivers a clean, clear description of a house where death has taken its toll and continues to haunt the lives of its inhabitants. "...our house was always in a state of winter, waiting for someone to dig us out. Ours was like a house under snow, frozen since the day our father died."
The ghosts that encircle the house in Chagrin Falls, Ohio are not only of a father who fell while tending to the gazebo but also of family members - survivors of the Holocaust, of a young wife and mother ripe with sensuality, of three young daughters safe in a father's cocoon. They speak in whispers that rival the voices of Anna, her mother Lilly, and her two sisters. They challenge the men who tromp through the house, traipsing into the lives of one man's family, trampling on the female semicircle created in the absence of the one man who made their lives whole.

Two Poems by Jill Bialosky Ode
Oh love, oh years, oh miracle that I still remember
every detail, or was it your touch, or the way in which you saw
something in me that I did not see? I take my lunch outdoors.
It’s simpler now, a cheese sandwich with mustard,
ice tea. The light is clearer, less murky, I notice
the pigeons flock for scraps, the cornices of buildings,
intricate architecture, where before I was blinded
by too much interference, too much heat, too much sun.
I sit on the bench in Bryant Park. We sat there a year ago.
The breeze was sharp. When the wind turned, it exposed the naked underside of the leaves on the sprawling oaks. The scanty shrubs, the daffodils. None of it made sense. I thought you were taller. What happened to your hair? Now a pierce, sharp, a diamond in your lobe. (You could still hurt me.) When we were in love I stared at your image outside the window of the Greyhound bus (it rained and rained) and held it in my mind until I could not. Twenty years have past. And still I want to ask. As if I have no son

Subterranean
by Jill Bialosky
She did not know when it would happen
or how it would overtake her
or whether she would allow herself.
All I know is that she could not take it anymore
lying day after day underneath the hollow tree, waiting,
consumed by a kind of fire,
wondering if there is a type of love
that saves us and whether there was more
to the world than the familiar paradise
She smelled nectar in the labored-over
chrysanthemum and amaryllis, but could not taste it. I know if it were a flower it would have bloomed in the cumulus overhead void of volition and sin, translucent as the filmy underside of a leaf. If it were an animal she would have followed it, but it was amorphous as feeling, weightless as dust, turbulent as an entire undisclosed universe radiating from the inner core beneath the earth and, still, she longed for it.
