Sir John Betjeman to ) was an English poet and writer on architecture . He was born in Highgate London , his surname indicating his Dutch ancestry. He left Magdalen College, Oxford without a degree due to lack of work which resulted in his failing his divinity exams. In his verse autobiography Summoned by Bells (1960), Betjeman tells the story of his early life, up to his employment as a teacher at a preparatory school Later, Betjeman obtained employment as a journalist, before joining the civil service. It has recently been revealed that his wartime duties entailed providing secret intelligence reports. Betjeman never took himself too seriously. His poems are often humorous, and in later life he enjoyed a career as a broadcaster, his popularity being in no small measure due to his bumbling image. He became Poet Laureate in 1972, succeeding Cecil Day Lewis . One of his first duties was to produce a poem in honour of the wedding of Princess Anne From A Few Late Chrysanthemums Oh little body, do not die. The soul looks out through wide blue eyes so questioningly into mine, that my tormented soul replies: "Oh little body, do not die. You hold the soul that talks to me, although our conversation be as wordless as the windy sky.

Hark, I hear the bells of Westgate,
I will tell you what they sigh,
Where those minarets and steeples
Prick the open Thanet sky. Happy bells of eighteen-ninety,
Bursting from your freestone tower!,
Recalling laurel, shrubs and privet,
Red geraniums in flower. Feet that scamper on the asphalt
Through the Borough Council grass,
Till they hide inside the shelter
Bright with ironwork and glass. Striving chains of ordered children
Purple by the sea-breeze made, Striving on to prunes and suet Past the shops on the Parade. Some with wire around their glasses Some with wire around their teeth, Writhing frames for running noses And the drooping lip beneath. Church of England bells of Westgate! On this balcony I stand

Poet, essayist, journalist, preservationist, Betjeman was knighted in 1969 and in 1972 he became Poet Laureate of England, although he was always self-deprecating and once described himself as 'a hack'.
His father was a manufacturer of Dutch extraction but as a schoolboy during the First World War, Betjeman suffered considerably because other children thought his name was German. He also suffered as a freshman at Oxford. He felt that people despised him because his father was 'in trade', and because although he had been at a quite respectable public school, Marlborough, he must be inferior to fellow students who had been to schools of higher social standing such as Eton, Harrow and Winchester. One of Betjeman's Oxford friends who shared his feelings, believing his school also to be socially inferior, was the novelist Evelyn Waugh . However, they both eventually moved into circles which enabled them to live the pleasure-seeking extravagant Oxford life described in Waugh's 'Brideshead Revisited', and neither of them took their academic work very seriously. Later Betjeman felt more confident about his social position, having married the daughter of an admittedly disapproving Field Marshal and acquired a mistress from a ducal family. He was also strong enough in his personal beliefs not to allow Waugh to persuade him to follow him into the Roman Catholic Church.

Sir John Betjeman
Sir John Betjeman, who became Poet Laureate in 1972, was well known through his appearances on television, and his love of traditional architecture and churches. He was born in London in 1906. From early childhood, he spent holidays at Trebetherick in Cornwall and there made friends with the Headmaster of Dragon School, Oxford. As a consequence of this friendship, he went to board at The Dragon School from 1917 to 1920. Following this, he went to Marlborough College and in 1925 he became a student at Magdalen College, Oxford. Betjeman's interest in churches and architecture was kindled at the Dragon School, but he had been interested in poetry from an early age. At Magdalen, he was part of the 'literary set' and after Oxford he was determined not to join his father's business in 'trade' but to carve out a literary career instead. In October 1930, he started working for the Architectural Review and in 1933 also, briefly, became a film critic on the Evening Standard. Betjeman married Penelope Chetwode and subsequently rented Garrards Farm in Uffington where they moved in February, 1934. The Betjemans soon became immersed in village life. John become People's Warden at The Church and Penelope directed plays and become involved in the Women's Institute. They entertained many famous friends at Uffington. Their son, Paul, was born in Uffington in 1937. Garrards Farm, Uffington, the chalk-built cottage where the Betjemans lived during the 1930s.

Slough
by John Betjeman (1906 - 1984)
John Betjeman published his poem about Slough in 1937 in the collected works Continual Dew. Slough was becoming increasingly industrial and some housing conditions were very cramped. In willing the destruction of Slough, Betjeman urges the bombs to pick out the vulgar profiteers but to spare the bald young clerks. He really was very fond of his fellow human beings. Slough is much improved nowadays and he might be pleasantly surprised by a stroll there.
Slough
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!
Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath. Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years. And get that man with double chin Who'll always cheat and always win, Who washes his repulsive skin In women's tears: And smash his desk of polished oak And smash his hands so used to stroke And stop his boring dirty joke And make him yell.

John Betjeman - a brief biography
John Betjeman was born on August 28th, 1906, near Highgate, London. His father was Ernest Betjemann, a cabinet maker, a trade which had been in the family for several generations. The family name was Betjemann, with two 'n's, but John dropped the second 'n' during the First World War, to make the name less German. John was an only child, and by all accounts had a lonely childhood, taking comfort from his teddy bear, Archibald, later to feature in his children's story, Archie and the Strict Baptists. Having attended his first schools in Highgate, John became a boarder at Dragon School, Oxford, aged eleven. Three years later, he went to Marlborough College, again as a boarder. Throughout John's childhood, his family went for holidays to Trebetherick in Cornwall, where his father owned a number of properties. These seemed to have been the happiest times for JB, and are remembered in many of his poems. In 1925, JB went to Magdalen College, Oxford. However, the many distractions of college life meant that he did not complete his degree, having failed a Divinity exam. He became a teacher at Thorpe House School, Gerrard's Cross, before working as a private secretary, and then at another prep school. In 1930, JB became an assistant editor of The Architectural Review. In 1931, his first book of poems
