The Messenger , a movie that's full of activity but confused and very shallow. Milla Jovovich, who mutates from L'Oreal spokesperson to Leonardo DiCaprio look-alike for her role here, seems to have had one too many triple-shot espressos before every scene. She over-acts her way through The Messenger The Messenger largely ignores this dramatic mother lode, though Joan herself has moments of self-doubt when her trial is at hand. (Dustin Hoffman arrives to harass her, dressed like a druid and billed as her conscience [!], but he is clearly meant to be God. Who wouldn't re-think things in that event?) Instead, the film focuses on the far less interesting themes of unquestioned nationalism and religious fervor, which can still make for a good, old-fashioned epic. The problem is that

Doch ein Tauchunfall im Alter von 17 Jahren machte es ihm unmöglich länger zu tauchen. Er erkannte, dass das Fernsehen etwas war, wo er all seine Interessen kombinieren konnte. Luc Besson ging für drei Jahre nach Amerika, kehrte dann nach Frankreich zurück, um seine Produktionsfirma Le Films de Loups zu gründen, die später in Les Films de Dauphins umbenannt wurde. Heute ist es ihm wieder möglich zu tauchen. Er schreibt über jeden seiner Filme ein Buch, in dem er die Dreharbeiten und den Arbeitsaufwand beschreibt. Außerdem hat er 1993 bei Mylene Farmers Musikvideo zu My Soul's Slashed Regie geführt. Typisch für seine Filme ist, dass die Kamera während des Eröffnungsabschnitts auf ein für den Film wichtiges Detail zufährt, aber nach unten schwenkt, bevor man genau etwas erkennen kann. Failing to deliver The Transporter, is a dud by RUPERT BOTTENBERG While he once helmed some truly great flicks, such as La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element (well, I liked it...), French filmmaker Luc Besson has in recent years devolved into a sort of overtanned, Riviera Roger Corman. Stepping back to merely producing and a bit of scriptwriting, Besson initially showed promise in his change of pace with the wacky Taxi films. That didn’t last long, as he tumbled into a rapid turnover of corny, sub-par trash like Kiss of the Dragon and Wasabi. The dreadful The Transporter fails to break the cycle of lameness. With the chic, sunkissed Côte d’Azur as a backdrop, The Transporter deposits Guy Ritchie regular Jason Statham in the role of an ex-military man who applies a don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy to his business of delivering questionable payloads for oily, moneyed criminal types. Things go awry when he discovers that the “package” in his trunk is the fetching Lai (Taiwanese starlet Shu Qi). Obviously, the bullets, bombs and bared knuckles are soon flying. To his credit, Statham holds his own as an action hero, and the action’s okay, I guess (Hong Kong director/fight-choreographer Cory Yuen, a frequent Jet Li collaborator, sees to that). But Statham’s delivery is strictly grim and stoic, utterly without humour. What’s particularly galling is that Besson had this script custom-made for Statham, who’s a remarkable comedic talent. The cinematic world doesn’t need any more stone-faced tough guys. It does need, rather urgently, actors who can pull off action, romance and comedy with equal aplomb. Statham could still yet become this—if he avoids this kind of nonsense in the future, and steers well clear of sleazy Eurotrash like Besson.

(poco come attrice) Film sconclusionato, ipertrofico, a tratti imbarazzante nel suo essere involontariamente comico. Si può anche non condividere, ma quantomeno assomiglia a un’idea: nel tentativo di dare spessore al personaggio, Besson chiama in causa anche Freud (o, come dicono alcuni Froid, NdV), propinando una lettura in chiave forzatamente "psicoanalitica" dell’infanzia della protagonista: Giovanna che si confessa due volte al giorno, Giovanna che ha le visioni , Giovanna che assiste all’uccisione e allo stupro (rigorosamente in quest’ordine) della sorella da parte degli Inglesi. Giovanna bambina, quindi, che accumula, rimugina e metabolizza dentro di sé tutti quei traumi che poi sbocceranno nell’estasi mistica dell’età adulta (si fa per dire, le cronache la danno arsa sul rogo appena diciannovenne). Stesso tema, ripreso però in maniera più convincente nel finale: uno strepitoso Dustin Hoffman incarna la coscienza della protagonista dando vita al solo personaggio accattivante del film, risollevando al contempo un bilancio attoriale deficitario (con quei capelli Milla Jovovich sembra Di Caprio, e recita come la Golino).
