John Berryman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. John Berryman (originally John Smith January 7 ) was an American poet , born in McAlester, Oklahoma . He was a major figure in American poetry in the second half of the 20th century and often considered one of the founders of the Confessional school of poetry. He is one of the figures acting as a bridge between the formally loose, socially aware poetry of the Beats and the personal, grieving poetry of Sylvia Plath . He was the author of The Dream Songs , which are both playful, witty, and morbid. Berryman died by suicide in 1972. Although Berryman published poems and achieved recognition early, his first major work was Homage to Mistress Bradstreet in . However, it was the collection of Dream Songs that gathered him the most admiration. The first volume, entitled 77 Dream Songs , was published in and won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. The second volume of Dream Songs , entitled His Toy, His Dream, His Rest

Doug Davis in Settings of John Berryman's The Dream Songs
Spotlight Theatre presents this remarkable concert one night only, February 21,2003 at 8 PM. All tickets are $10.
"'God bless Henry. He lived like a rat.'" So starts the 13th of John Berryman's 77 Dream Songs , the tome for which the late poet justifiably won 1965's Pulitzer Prize. Those 77 sonnet-like poems, along with 300-some more that Berryman later published, constitutes a seminal, uniquely American documents of high gallows humor and harrowing despaira document of which I am extraordinarily fond. So I expected disaster when an unreleased CD by pianist-composer Doug Davis setting 14 of Berryman’s Dream Songs to music recently crossed my desk. But Davis, who’s director of Composition and Jazz Studies at Cal State Bakersfield, has a real ear for the poet’s shaggy rhythms and an artful, dramatic touch; his inventive setting, employing a solo piano, jazz trio and chamber ensemble with operatic tenor, are quite wonderful and exceedingly well-suited to Berryman’s text. Blusey, playful and malevolent, with strong overtones of Bartok and Berg, the music is jarring, creepy and slyly seductive. And the disc, which I found compulsively listenable, is both appropriately unsettling and a hell of a lot of fun. With bassist James Dethlefson, drummer Kyle Burnham, and tenor John Gerhold.” Brant Reiter, LA Weekly, August 30 – September 5, 2002

Echoes Main Biography Sample Poems Inspired Poems ... Bibliography Biography of John Berryman John Berryman: Living Through the Dreams By: Michelle Luo John Berryman, famous for The Dream Songs , is a poet who is very non-traditional in his form. He “takes liberties with syntax and style”. The Dream Songs involves a syntax which Berryman partially adopted from Shakespeare who was a big influence in his work. Some other major influences in his life were Robert Lowell, Mark Van Doren, and Yeats. In The Dream Songs , Berryman speaks about his own life through a man named Henry. Henry is a middle-aged American who must deal with paternal suicide, drunkenness, and other problems that Berryman himself experienced. He speaks to an unnamed friend about his issues, and his friend sometimes offers advice. There are almost 400 Dream Songs which were originally published in 77 Dream Songs and His Toy, His Dream, His Rest . When they became a big hit, they were published together in The Dream Songs Berryman often wrote about how he felt about his father’s death in his poetry. Berryman was also dependent on alcohol for thirty years and was treated several times, drifting in and out of rehabilitation and psychoanalysis. His addiction was another issue that had a large impact in his poetry. Berryman’s distinctive way of telling about his life through poetry was loved by many. He won eleven awards: Oldham Shakespeare Prize, Poetry Society of America’s Shelley Memorial award (1948), American Academy award for poetry (1950), National Institute of Arts and Letters Award (1950), the Levinson Prize (1950), the Guggenheim Fellowship (1952, 1966), Academy of American Poets, The Pulitzer Prize(1964), National Endowment for the Arts award (1967), National Book Award (1969), and the Bollingen Award (1969).
