Add to a Notebook John Berryman John Berryman was born John Smith in MacAlester, Oklahoma, in 1914. He received an undergraduate degree from Columbia College in 1936 and attended Cambridge University on a fellowship. He taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and went on to occupy posts at Harvard and Princeton. From 1955 until his death in 1972, he was a professor at the University of Minnesota. His early work was published in a volume entitled Five Young American Poets in 1940 and reflects the influences of the British poets W. B. Yeats W. H. Auden Gerard Manley Hopkins , and the Americans Hart Crane and Ezra Pound Poems (1942) and The Dispossessed It was not until the publication of Homage to Mistress Bradstreet in 1956, when he was already in his forties, that he won widespread recognition and acclaim as a boldly original and innovative poet. Nevertheless, no one was prepared for the innovation that would follow, a collection that would seal Berryman's reputation as an essential American original: 77 Dream Songs , which was published in 1964 and awarded a Pulitzer Prize, unveiled the unforgettable and irreppressible alter egos "Henry" and "Mr. Bones" in a sequence of sonnet-like poems whose wrenched syntax, scrambled diction, extraordinary leaps of language and tone, and wild mixture of high lyricism and low comedy plumbed the extreme reaches of a human soul and psyche. In succeeding years Berryman added to the sequence, until there were nearly four hundred collected as

    55. BERRYMAN, John., Stephen Crane.

    http://www.polybiblio.com/quaritch/J171.html
    Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
INSCRIBED TO MARK VAN DOREN BERRYMAN, John. Stephen Crane. New York: William Sloane Associates, 1950. 8vo., pp. xv, 347; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and cover, with spine slightly faded, minor bumps to head and tail; dust-jacket clean and neat, with only the suggestion of rubbing, creasing at extremities. A fine copy, lengthily inscribed on the front endpaper to Mark and Dorothy Van Doren. First edition. The inscription reads:
Having attempted suicide only the year before, the John Berryman who arrived at Columbia University in 1932 was a deeply unhappy youth. Happily it was here that he met Mark Van Doren, under whose mentorship he flourished, publishing his first poems and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in English.
Van Doren also allowed Berryman (after an initial failure) to re-sit the scholarship exam that permitted him to travel to England. These two years at Cambridge - during which time he met Yeats, Eliot, Auden, and Dylan Thomas, wrote plays, won the Oldham Shakespeare prize, and published poems in Southern Review - were the making of Berryman as a scholar and a poet. Indeed, throughout his life Berryman would cite Van Doren as the person most responsible for his poetic vocation.
One wonders at the auto-critical comments in the inscription. Perhaps Berryman was conscious of Van Doren's response when, some years before, the young poet announced his intention to write a biography of Shakespeare: 'Scholarship is for those with shovels,' Van Doren responded, 'whereas you're a man of the pen, the wind, the flying horse, the shining angel, glittering fiend - anything but the manure where scholars have buried the masterpieces of the world.'

JAMES MERRILL'S COPY [MERRILL.] BERRYMAN, John. Homage to Mistress Bradstreet. 8vo., pp. 58, [4]; cloth and dust-jacket illustration by Ben Shahn, lettered in white on red spine, with James Merrill's ownership signature on front endpaper; a fine copy, in a fine dust-jacket, with the owner's annotations throughout. First edition. Poet James Merrill's copy, with basic annotations marking the division of dialogue within the poem: initialled 'A' for Anne Bradstreet, 'B' for Simon Bradstreet.
It was with Berryman and Lowell in the late 1950s and early 1960s that so-called confessional poetry emerged as the most powerful current in American verse. Berryman's poems in particular, with their autobiographical bent and shameless self-concentration, were widely imitated.
Like Berryman's, James Merrill's poetry had always been ornate, dense, obscure, and highly literary; yet his poems, also, grew more personal with time - although he never shared Berryman's need to blurt out dark secrets and appall the reader. Merrill may have remained reticent, but he had been listening and learning from Berryman, as the evidence of this close reading of Homage bears out. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bernard Quaritch Ltd.
