St Margaret Society
The St Margaret Society has had another year of musical excellence, with a full and varied programme. This year's Committee were proud to oversee the return of the Queens' Lunchtime Recital Series. The Lent orchestral concert included Beethoven's 2nd Symphony in D major and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante , with Natalie Stopps and Sally Randall as soloists. The concert was conducted by David Pievsky, and the proceeds were donated to Save the Children. As always, the largest event organised by the society was the end of term choral concert. John Andrews conducted the MagSoc Chorus and Orchestra in a rousing performance of Brahms' German Requiem , and Richard Benton joined the orchestra for Shostakovich's 2nd Piano Concerto The tradition of the Long Gallery Concert was rekindled at the beginning of the Easter Term. Once again, this historic building resonated with a splendid variety of music of all styles. After a short recess for exams, the Society was pleased to welcome Queens' Chapel Choir to take part in the May Week concert. Rupert Jordan directed a programme including Britten's A Hymn to St Cecilia , Finzi's Lo, the Full Final Sacrifice

Plain Pictures: Images of the American Prairie
Joni L. Kinsey (Published by Smithsonian Institution Press, 1996, $65 cloth; $34.95 paper) Thoughts of the American landscape as seen in our art inevitably lead to visions of mountains and forests, lakes and cataracts, and the sea," writes Stephen Prokopoff, director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art, in the acknowledgments of the book Plain Pictures: Images of the American Prairie. "Missing from this list are the vast expanses of prairie, which account for a large part of the continent's land surface," he continues.
"East Custer County, Nebraska 1887," a photograph by Solomon Butcher, depicts the conditions of prairie life. (Courtesy of the Nebraska State Historical Society Plain Pictures: Images of the American Prairie celebrates the very real, distinguishing features and history of the great American heartland. It is the first book to address representations of the midwestern prairie as a genre distinct from American western art. "There had been so many studies of landscape American art that ignored the grasslands and prairies," Kinsey says. "But I knew that these landscapes were historically, geographically, ecologically and culturally rich.

All-state teams
By the Herald staff There was one more award left for Kiona-Benton senior McKenzie Burgess. Burgess was the unanimous choice as Most Valuable Player on the inaugural Class 2A all-state volleyball team, one of eight all-state teams announced Wednesday. "That's awesome," said Burgess, who signed with Washington State shortly after leading the Bears to the state title. "This just adds to everything that's gone on this season." Sharon Brandon, who retired as Ki-Be's coach after the season, was selected as coach of the year, while junior middle blocker Nichole Boyer was a second-team honoree. Richland junior midfielder Brittney Dugger was named co-MVP of 4A girls soccer, sharing the honor with Kentlake midfielder Shuree Hyatt. Unlike Kentlake, which was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs by eventual runner-up Cascade (Everett), Richland finished third at state led by Dugger, the Big Nine Player of the Year who scored a conference-leading 22 goals. "All the recognition that's rolled in for her, from conference player of the year to All-Area MVP to this, really reflects her total commitment to the team," said Bombers coach Chris Smith. "Individual honors weren't her priority; her focus is on contributing to the team. It's just a bonus that all the individual recognition came along."
