    Jack Benny
(Redirected from The Jack Benny Show Benjamin Kubelsky February 14 December 26 ), better known as Jack Benny , was a comedian radio performer, and early television star. He grew up in Waukegan, Illinois Jack Benny Benny began studying the violin , an instrument that would become his trademark, when he was six. By fourteen he was playing in local dance bands, as well as in his high school orchestra, until he failed school and left for a career in vaudeville . In , he was playing in the same theater as the young Marx Brothers , whose mother was so enchanted with Benny that she invited him to be their permanent accompanist. The plan was foiled by Benny's parents, who refused to let their son, then seventeen, go on the road, but it was the beginning of his long friendship with Zeppo Marx The following year, Benny formed a vaudeville musical duo with pianist Cora Salisbury. This provoked famous violinist Jan Kubelik , who thought that the young vaudeville entertainer with a similar name (Kubelsky) would damage his reputation. Finally, Bejamin Kubelsky agreed to change his name to Ben K. Benny (sometimes spelled Bennie). He also found a new pianist, Lyman Wood. He left show business briefly in to join the Navy during World War I , but even then, he often entertained the troops. One evening, he was booed by the troops, so he began telling Navy jokes on stage. He was a big hit, earning himself a reputation as a comedian as well as a musician.

    55. Buck Benny Rides Again
Site dedicated to the 1940 film which shows jack benny as a Western movie hero. Includes review, picture gallery and animated gifs.
    http://www.wildwestweb.net/buckb.html
Review © 1997 by Teddy Blue, Old West Reenactor.
The film begins on the right note. Don Wilson, Jack's radio announcer, says before the title, "We bring you that rugged hero of the great outdoors, the silent sphinx of the prairie, that man among men where men are men...." Thus is established the fact that Buck Benny is someone to recken with in the untamed west. Much of the first part of the movie is devoted to a romantic subplot (Ellen Drew never looked lovelier) as well the creation of an excuse to return Buck to his western roots. I'm sure that the audiences of the day, familiar with the Benny radio persona, needed this preliminary material before actually seeing the film's hero astride his faithful steed as he watches the horizon for danger with his cool, steely eyes, his hand but a few inches from his trusty Colt six-shooter.
I don't want to discuss all the thrilling scenes of Buck Benny Rides Again. I should leave some surprisesjust in case you have yet to see it. But the final fight scene is a corkerin it Jack "Buck" Benny shows not only his skill with two revolvers, but his fist-fighting ability when he has to deal with the two outlaws again. Of course, he is the ultimate western hero who single-handedly rids the West of two of its worst bad guys! I suspect that this tribute has gone too longbut I can't help but wax poetic about one of my all time favorite western movie heroesBuck Benny! I've saved perhaps the best for last: at a barbeque Buck succinctly states his philosophy about the living in the West.

By Jack Benny and his daughter Joan
    Warner Books, 1990
A great book - lots of entertaining anecdotes from Joan, Jack's daughter. By far the highlight of the book is the excerpts that are included from Jack's unpublished autobiography, "I Always Had Shoes".
    Jack Benny

    Doubleday, 1978
A much more detailed look at Jack's life with comments from Mary, friends, and co-workers of Jack's throughout the years. Jack Benny An Intimite Biography By Irving A. Fein G. P. Putnam Sons, 1976 A fun book, and the first one published after Jack's passing. Unlike the "interview" nature of Mary's book, this one is almost entirely told from Irving's point of view. Apart from Jack himself, Irving, as Jack's personal manager for years and years, is the perfect person to be telling his story. The Jack Benny Show The Life and Times of America's Most Loved Entertainer By Milt Josefsberg Of the four biographies on Jack, this one is my favourite. It's not the most factual, it's not the most detailed, but it's certainly the best read. (And... I'm grateful to my friend Sue for sending me a copy!) :-)

Following success in vaudeville and radio, Benny became a television star with his Emmy Award - winning show featuring Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Dennis Day, and Mary Livingstone, his longtime partner and wife. Benny created an image that became an American institution: a miserly, vain, inept violinist who was forever thirty-nine years old.

    The biography of Jack Benny
Outline of the old time radio career of comedy genius, Jack Benny.
Who was Jack Benny? If anyone asked you who Benjamin Kubelsky was, you would probably shake your head and not know. Yet if someone asked you who Jack Benny was, the name would bring instant recognition of the comedian of radio and television. Jack Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky in Waukegan, Illinois on February 14, 1894. It was while a boy in Waukegan that he learned the violin, which he used as a comedic prop so effectively in later years. bodyOffer(31498) Jack Benny worked in vaudeville while in his early twenties and then again after serving in the U.S. Navy. After serving in the Navy, Jack returned to vaudeville not as a violinist but now as a comedian. Typically, a performer would move from vaudeville to radio. Benny went another route by acting in motion pictures, his first being in 1927. It was not until 1932 that Jack Benny began his radio career. Why was Jack Benny so popular? Jack Benny had a comedic style that was unique. Instead of making jokes about others, the jokes would often be at Jack Benny's expense. He would allow the other actors on his radio show to get the laugh. He developed a radio character that was extremely miserly with money, vain beyond reason and a talentless violinist. This character was enhanced by a talented cast of actors who worked with Jack. This core cast brought comedy to the radio in a fresh, vibrant way for 23 years.
