It is believed by some that Aphra Behn was born near Canterbury and that her real name was Aphra Johnson . Her father may have been related to Lord Francis Willoughby , governor of Surinam, a British territory in South America, and from whom he received a business appointment in that colony. The family traveled to Surinam in 1663, but Aphra's father died of illness during the voyage. The family remained in that exotic land for six months before returning to England. Before leaving Surinam, Aphra carried on a torrid affair with William Scot whose father had conspired to send Charles I to the executioner's block and was himself later executed. Aphra and William Scot were enamored of the popular novel L'Astree by Honore de Urfe and referred to each other by the names of the protagonists

Her parents (John and Amy Amis, or Bartholomew and Elizabeth Johnson depending on where you look) took her to an English colony in Surinam (later to become Dutch Guiana) as a child. Some reports say her father was to be Lieutenant Governor of the colony but died on the journey there. At some point Aphra Amis (or Aphra Johnson?) returned to England and married a Dutch-English (or German-English?) merchant, Behn. During the 1660s, Mr Behn died and Aphra went to the Netherlands to spy for Charles II of England. This was a very important post due to the Anglo-Dutch tension, and indeed war, of that period. Some say he stopped paying her and she ended up in a debtors prison after borrowing the money to get back to England. Some allege her professional writing career was driven by a desire never to end up depending on others financially. Whatever the reason, Aphra Behn's plays began to be produced in 1670 or 1671. The plays were popular in her time, but she also published prose and poetry. At some point (around 1678?) Aphra Behn published what is considered by some to be the first modern novel, 'Oroonoko'. Taking (for Behn's time) an anti-slavery stance, it tells the story of an African Prince who is captured by an English slave trader and transported to Surinam. The novel was (later in 1688?) included in the collection 'Three Histories'.

Aphra Behn (1640 - 1689) Aphra Behn stars in the canon of English literature as the first known English woman to earn her living by the pen. She is famous for her prose work Oroonoko (1688) and for her comic Restoration dramas such as The Rover (1681) and The Lucky Chance (1686). As well as plays and prose she wrote poetry and translated works from French and Latin. From what we know of her life she had a colourful childhood and adolescence, some of which was spent in Dutch Guiana in the West Indies (providing material for Oroonoko ). She is thought to have married a Dutch merchant - although the date of their wedding is unknown - and she is known to have acted as a spy in Antwerp in 1666. An imprisonment for debt led her to write for an income. The Forc'd Marriage , her first play, was produced in 1671, and its witty and vivacious style was typical of her work. The Rover, produced in two parts, was a highly successful depiction of the adventures of a small group of English Cavaliers in Madrid and Naples during the exile of Charles II. Oroonoko is the story of an enslaved African prince and is now considered a foundation stone in the development of the English novel. Among her sources was the Italian commedia dell' arte (improvised comedy), which she used in her farce The

Aphra Behn, Preface to The Lucky Chance Aphra Behn (1640-1689) was not the first woman writer; neither was she the only woman writer of her day. But Aphra Behn holds the singular distinction of being recognized as the first professional woman writer in the English language. That's right, ladies Aphra Behn was the first woman writer who did it for money. It was a natural choice for this young woman, a recent spy for the crown and a widow at the age of 26, to turn to selling herself (in a manner of speaking) in order to survive. Many other women of the period did so; but instead of novels and plays, they sold something much more fundamental and far more common. Single women, whether spinsters or widows, often allowed themselves to be kept by rich men of the commons and nobility alike. Mrs. Behn chose not to sell herself but her wits and words, and was branded a whore for her efforts. Not much is known of her origins. Most biographers seem to agree she was born Aphra Johnson in or around 1640, and that she acquired her education and her connections at court through a noble childhood friend for whom her mother acted as a wet-nurse. She very likely traveled with her family to Surinam in her early 20s; at the age of 26, after having been briefly married to a Mr. Behn (of which nothing is known), she went to Antwerp as a spy for the crown. The mission was singularly unsuccessful, and she returned to England a debtor (very likely serving a short term in prison).
