Behn, Aphra (ca 1640-1689)
page: Aphra Behn, known to her contemporaries as a "scandal" for both her writings and her flamboyant personal life, was one of the most influential dramatists of the late seventeenth century. Today, she is better known as a poet and novelist than playwright, and her extraordinary biography remains intriguing. Her birth name and parentage is a mystery. She was probably born in Wye, in 1640. Speculations about her early life include the possibility of several sets of parents. A biographical essay by "One of the Fair Sex," affixed to the collection of The Histories and Novels of the Late Ingenious Mrs. Behn (1696), maintains that Aphra was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of Canterbury, whom Aphra accompanied, along with a young boy supposed to be her brother, on a voyage to the West Indies in 1663. Johnson, who was to have had an official appointment, died on the way. The mother and two children lived for a while in Surinam, then a Dutch possession, and Behn's most famous novel, Oronooko or The Royal Slave (1688), is based on her experiences there.

"All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn, which is, most scandalously but rather appropriately, in Westminster Abbey, for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds. It is sheshady and amorous as she waswho makes it not quite fantastic for me to say to you tonight: Earn five hundred a year by your wits."
Virginia Woolf
A Room of One's Own Aphra Behn , the first professional woman writer in English, lived from 1640 to 1689. After John Dryden , she was the most prolific dramatist of the Restoration, but it is for her pioneering work in prose narrative that she achieved her place in literary history.

http://www.lit-arts.net/Behn/chron-ab.htm
Chronology of Aphra Behn's Life
Birth of Aphra Johnson, second daughter of Bartholomew Johnson and Elizabeth Denham, baptized Dec. 14 at Harbledown outside of Canterbury. (Although there has been much controversy over the circumstances of Behn's birth, this appears to be the most likely candidate.) Probable period of residence in Surinam. Possible date for marriage to Mr. Behn, merchant of "Dutch" (German) extraction. Death of Mr. Behn? Aphra Behn serves in Antwerp as a spy for Charles II. Sent to debtor's prison for debts she incurred in the service of the crown. Probably released shortly thereafter. Production of Behn's first play, The Forced Marriage , at Lincoln's Inn Fields by the Duke's Company. It was a great success and ran for six nights, providing its author with two nights' income. (The "third day" always belonged to the author of the play.) February - The Amourous Prince (published 1671); Dorset Garden Theater opened. Covent Garden Drollery published, probably edited by Behn. The Dutch Lover produced at Dorset Garden Theater; does not hold the stage until the third day (not published until 1677).

Behn, Aphra u b A n, b E n] Pronunciation Key Behn, Aphra The Rover. All her plays are noted for their broad, bawdy humor. Despite her success as a playwright, however, her best literary achievement can be found in her novels. The most notable of these is Oroonoko (1688), a heroical love story, the first philosophical novel in English. Aphra Behn was famous for her lifestyle as well as her works; her denial of woman's subservience to man and her high-living, bohemian existence has led critics to describe her as the George Sand of the Restoration and a forerunner of the feminist movement. Her literary reputation declined rapidly in the 18th cent., but Montague Summers's collected edition of her work (6 vol., 1915) revived an interest in her. See biography by F. M. Link (1968); A.
