It's a beautiful, warm, sunny day in Melbourne as I write this, and the "Celebrate The Bean" part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, www.melbfoodwinefest.com.au, is on as I write. This is a coffee festival for the consumer, with stalls (the white tents) on the upper level for domestic machines, and the lower level for commercial machines and roasters.
There are consumer "seminars" on growing, home roasting, espresso, domestic machines and more, and it's PACKED with people! Below is a pictorial record of the event. The Coffee Academy at William Angliss College display booth.

An Interview
with
Alan Bean
By Jim Plaxco On the afternoon of October 3, 1992, I had the privilege to sit and speak, all too briefly, with Alan Bean, Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot, 4th man to walk on the Moon, Commander of the 1973 Skylab 2 mission, and renowned space artist. The following is a transcription of that conversation. JP : Approximately how many paintings have you done? Alan Bean : About 70. JP : Over what kind of time-span? Alan Bean : We're talking now space paintings, about 9 years. JP : All the paintings I've seen by you are of your experiences on the Moon. Have you done any that relate to your Skylab experiences? Alan Bean : No, I haven't. I plan to do some about Skylab. In fact I had planned when I began all this back in 1981, when I left NASA to do the job of recording the adventures that I had and other astronauts had in space, doing all these different programs, particularly Skylab and Apollo. But I found that being an artist and doing accurate work is very difficult. It's difficult to jump around between different kinds of spacesuits, different kinds of hardware, and other things, and make them accurate and make them beautiful. So I've been concentrating my efforts at least for the past number of years on Apollo. JP : Is there some particular aspect of your astronaut training that you feel most helped your artistic abilities?

'Patent-Leather' Truth
By Steve Troy In 1998, another intriguing literary contribution was added to the many already published, reflecting the personal accounts and memories of Apollo Lunar Exploration. " Apollo ," is a marvelous, factual and artistic sojourn that takes the reader through this era via the rich paintings and knowledgeable commentary of veteran astronaut and Apollo 12 moonwalker, Alan Bean. This visual feast is complemented by the descriptive text embellishments of former Smithsonian geologist, and author/writer, Andrew Chaikin. As I looked at the many paintings in Bean's book, I couldn't help but notice that his artistic treatments are, to say the very least, "intriguing." And as I continued to peruse this wondrous collection of visual images painted by a man who had actually walked on the surface of the Moon I recalled something crucial about what I was viewing: in a dialogue between Richard C. Hoagland (of the "Enterprise Mission") and Art Bell, of late night radio's "Coast to Coast AM" several years ago, Richard reported on, among other things, the 1996 Washington Press Conference . It was there that he, as well as other lunar researchers and scientists, released the results and stunning evidence of an extensive 7-year investigation into "lunar glass structures" found on NASA photography, to the Washington Press Corp. Part of this late night radio discussion (after Washington) included the probable first-hand observation of "gauzy, crystalline glass," seen in the lunar sky and around the moonwalkers themselves including astronaut Alan Bean. Hoagland related a question that had been posed to Bean by a major news magazine in 1995: "What does space look like from the lunar surface?" Bean's fascinating answer …

Alan L. Bean Alan L. Bean walked on the moon during the Apollo 12 mission and commanded the second Skylab flight, spending 59 days aboard the orbiting laboratory. He was born March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Tex. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas in 1955. At Texas he was a Navy ROTC student and was commissioned upon graduation. After completing flight training, Bean was assigned to a jet attack squadron at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. After a four-year tour, he attended the Navy Test Pilot School and flew as a test pilot for several types of Navy aircraft. He was one of 14 selected by NASA in the third group of astronauts in October 1963. He served as backup crewman for the Gemini 10 and Apollo 9 missions before assignment as Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 12. On November 19, 1969, Commander Pete Conrad and Bean landed on the Ocean of Storms and became the third and fourth humans to walk on the moon, while Richard Gordon orbited overhead in the Command Module. During two outside excursions they deployed several surface experiments and installed the first nuclear-powered generator station on the moon to provide the power source. They inspected an unmanned Surveyor spacecraft that landed there two years earlier and collected 60 pounds of rocks and lunar soil for scientists to study back on Earth.

A speeding ticket written to Jack Swigert and signed by him. This is a carbon copy on pink paperthe portion given to Swigert. It is also accompanied by two carbon copies of letters sent to the Clerk of Courts from Swigert requesting delays in his trial and two letters from the Clerk in response. The correspondence is interesting as Swigert alludes to his work for the government but never identifies himself as an astronaut. During this time, Swigert was a member of the support crew for Apollo 11. Probably unique and ideal for a setting featuring the astronaut the right stuff. Swigert was clocked at 70mph! $300 Larger Cover Image

In this photograph he is immortalizing his partner, Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott, proudly riding in their new car, the Lunar Rover.” Alan captures a memorable moment during the 1971 lunar mission, with the Falcon lunar module and a brilliantly blue Earth for a backdrop. Alan Bean, 'Apollo 12' astronaut, to speak Sept. 30
A pollo 12 astronaut and artist Alan Bean, the fourth man to walk on the moon and the first painter to step foot on lunar soil, will give a lecture at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, in Mitchell Hall. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a signing of his book, Apollo: An Eyewitness Account. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended by calling 831-8242. As commander of Skylab Mission II , Bean and his crew lived 59 days in space and 270 miles above the Earth. During his career as an astronaut, he helped establish 11 world records in aeronautics and space. He also was awarded two NASA Distinguished Service Medals, two Navy Distinguished Service Medals, the Robert J. Collier Trophy, the Yuri Gagarin Gold Medal and numerous other national and international honors. When Bean left the space program in 1981, he devoted himself to a new career as an artist, documenting the exploration of the moon with the authority of an eyewitness and the passion of a true believer. According to author Andrew Chaikin, "Alan Bean is painting Apollo's human adventure. His art is both visionary and historic." Five of Bean's paintings are included in the University Gallery/ Mineralogical Museum exhibition "One Small Step: Exploring America's Adventures in Space, 1959-1999," which continues at UD through Nov. 1. The exhibition and its related activities are designed to capture the imagination of gallery visitors and to increase understanding of the significance of space exploration, both in terms of its scientific and technological contexts, as well as its historical and cultural implications. (Please see story on page 7 about the current space exhibition.)
