Monday and December 28th until January 4th. History
Known as the "town of green, water and serenity,"Koto City figured significantly in the life of Matsuo Basho, who left a great contribution to the literature of Japan. In 1680 Basho left Nihonbashi in Edo (as Tokyo was then known), to live in a thatched cottage in Fukagawa, some distance away from Nihonbashi the center of the city.
At that time, Fukagawa was a quiet, swampy area,@and the Basho(banana) tree planted by one of his disciples grew so luxuriantly that his cottage was known as the "Basho-an", and "Basho" became his pen name.
Living in Fukagawa, or using it as the base for his journeys around Japan, Basho established the presentfrom of the haiku, producing many excellent works by which the haiku, until then regarded primarily as an entertaining@pastime, gained acceptance as a major literary genre. It was also in Fukagawa that Basho sat down to write most of his travel journals, including his most famous one, The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Haiku poetry...
These short poems were written by Matsuo Basho, a Japanese poet that lived in the 16th century. He was a traveller - often would he just take his trusty staff, some food, and set off on a journey. No matter how long the trip was, or how harsh the conditions were, he'd keep going because he loved to travel, he loved the nature and what it provided him. His poetry contains an intense bond with nature, and radiates beauty he sees in even most ordinary parts of the surroundings. Often, in his travels, after he'd reach the top of a hill, or when he'd pause to take a rest, he'd stop and look around. He'd see beautiful energy flow around him - the golden sun bathing a valley, blooming trees by the path. But he'd also find the same beauty in much smaller things - tiny purseweed flowers under a bush or honey-bees occupied collecting nectar from flowers. This intense feeling of total awareness that often lasts just for a short while he made permanent by describing it in his poems. Last modified on Feb 13, 1996

Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694)
Basho (bah-shoh), pseudonym of Matsuo Munefusa (1644-94), Japanese poet, considered the finest writer of Japanese haiku during the formative years of the genre. Born into a samurai family prominent among nobility, Basho rejected that world and became a wanderer, studying Zen, history, and classical Chinese poetry, living in apparently blissful poverty under a modest patronage and from donations by his many students. From 1667 he lived in Edo (now Tokyo), where he began to compose haiku. The structure of his haiku reflects the simplicity of his meditative life. When he felt the need for solitude, he withdrew to his basho-an , a hut made of plantain leaves ( basho )- hence his pseudonym. Basho infused a mystical quality into much of his verse and attempted to express universal themes through simple natural images, from the harvest moon to the fleas in his cottage. Basho brought to haiku "the Way of Elegance" ( fuga-no-michi ), deepened its Zen influence, and approached poetry itself as a way of life (

Basho Spring rain
conveyed under the trees
in drops. A green willow,
dripping down into the mud,
at low tide. By the old temple,
peach blossoms;
a man treading rice. With every gust of wind,
the butterfly changes its place
on the willow. All the day long-
yet not long enough for the skylark,
singing, singing. The old pond: a frog jumps in,- the sound of water. Husking rice,  a child squints up  to view the moon.  Cedar umbrellas, off  to Mount Yoshimo for  the cherry blossoms. Octopus traps -  summer’s moonspun dreams,  soon ended.  Winter downpour -  even the monkey  needs a raincoat.  Year’s end, all  corners of this  floating world, swept.
