The Old Duck Man - Carl Barks Carl Barks was born on March 27 in 1901 near Merril, Oregon. He grew up on the farm of his parents. 1910 the family moved for two years to California. With ten years he started to draw, inspirated by the drawings of a class-mate. When Carl was 15 his mother died. As a result of this he left school to help his father on the farm. He used every free time to work on other farms. As it was the time of WW1 boys like him could earn five Dollars a day, which was a lot for that time. Nevertheless he continued drawing. For a short time he took a correspndence course at the "London School of Cartooning". In December 1918 he went with 100 Dollar to San Francisco, where he tried to get a job as an artist. After two disappointing years Barks returned to Oregon, where he married 1923 for the first time. As the farm was going badly, he moved together with his wife to Roseville, eastern of Sacramento. Barks was working there for five and a half years as a coach builder for the "Pacific Fruit Express". But he didn't give up his dream to become cartoonist. 1928 he started to sell funny drawing to the "Calgary Eye-Opener" in Minneapolis. After the separation of his wife, Barks returned to Oregon in 1930. Getting unemployed, because of the world economic crisis, he finall decided to make drawing to his occupation. After another year as freelance at the "Calgary Eye-Opener" he moved to Minneaplois to get a regular job as joke writer and illustrator.

Carl Barks was one of the world's legendary comic artists, and as the father of the Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics, he could properly be called 'The Cartoonist of the 20th Century'. Beginning his career at Disney in the thirties, his talent was soon recognized by his employer and colleagues. He soon made solo albums, including the entire 'Uncle Scrooge' series.

From 1943 to 1966 Carl Barks wrote and drew hundreds of Disney's Donald Duck comics. He created Duckburg and several new characters for the comics (Uncle Scrooge McDuck, Gyro Gearloose, Gladstone Gander) and gave 'the Duck family' real human feelings. His stories are masterpieces of escalating storylines, and are great entertainment for all ages.
An original detail sketch by Barks
Unfortunately Barks' talent wasn't enough for his employers to hold on to his originals, and as a consequence, are nearly all destroyed. A great loss, since Barks was a dynamic cartoonist and an imaginative scenarist, whose influence on cartooning in general cannot be overestimated.
The 'Old Duck Man', as Barks affectionately was called, stopped working for Disney in 1968 and started painting for his own pleasure. He got into conflict with Disney over using the Duck characters - the same ones that he created - in his oil paintings. Many Disney artists have tried to equal Barks' style and wit in his Duck stories, but only

Biography
Barks was born in Merrill, Oregon to William Barks and his wife Arminta Johnson. He had an older brother named Clyde. His paternal grandfather was named David Barks and his maternal grandparents were Carl Johnson and his wife Suzanna Massey, but little else is known about his family.
Childhood
According to Carl's description of his childhood he was a rather lonely child. His parents owned one square mile of land that served as their farm. The nearest neighbor lived half a mile away but he was more an acquaintance to his parents than a friend. The closest school was about two miles away and Carl had to walk that distance every day. The rural area had few children though and Barks later remembered that his school had about eight or ten students including him. The lessons lasted from nine o'clock in the morning to four o'clock in the afternoon and then he had to return to the farm. There he remembered not having anybody to talk to as his parents were busy and he had little in common with his brother.

Text and photographs by Frank Stajano In my life I had the great privilege not only of growing up on Barks's comics but also of meeting the man who created them. I have decided to split this page into two parts: a more formal presentation of this outstanding author, and a more personal view of my relationship with him.
The Duck Man
Who is Carl Barks? To me, the greatest comics author of all times, and one of the giants of 20th century literature. I don't expect this assessment to be universally shared, but I also know I'm not alone in thinking this. Few will argue with the fact that Barks, with Floyd Gottfredson a close second, was the best comics author that the Walt Disney company ever had. He turned Donald Duck from a slapstick comedy cartoon character to an all too real human being (albeit duck shaped) in whose traits readers could recognise their friends and themselves. As he breathed new life into the characters he inherited from the animation and the daily strips, Barks also created memorable new ones: Uncle Scrooge McDuck, the Beagle Boys, Gyro Gearloose and his helper, Magica de Spell, Gladstone Gander, the Junior Woodchucks just to name the most famous. It is doubtful that the world of Disney comics would have ever developed to the extent that it has without Carl Barks's masterpieces, which attracted and inspired a critical mass not only of readers but also of other authors, from all over the world. One of a minority of comics authors who developed both the plot and the artwork for his stories, Barks came into Disney comics from Disney animation, where his strengths were

Carl Barks, the genius behind the creation of "Scrooge McDuck," the world's richest duck , and the man who drew the comic book adventures of Donald Duck, his nephews, and Uncle Scrooge back in the '40s, '50s and '60s is the subject of this page. The remarkable Mr. Barks celebrated his 96th birthday at a special celebration presented at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, April 12 and 13, 1997. He is seen here on that occasion with Kathy Morby and Bill Grandey, of the Carl Barks Studio, together with 250 of his closest friends. Information and commentary about Mr. Barks can be found on many web pages other than this one. Try running his name through a search engine or pursue him further via one of the links at the bottom of this page. In addition, a number of books have been written which contain biographical information and a complete survey of his career. Consequently, this page is mostly limited to information regarding the current value of original oil paintings and certain limited edition prints, signed by Mr. Barks. In addition, I hope to be a sort of central point for compiling the opinions of fans regarding which of the famous Barks oil paintings is the "best" one.

Born in Oregon in 1901, Carl Barks was destined to be one of the most popular comic book artists and storytellers in the world. Arguably, he still is. And yet why haven't you heard of him? He was of the generation of Constantin Alajalov, Edward Ardizzone, Boris Artzybasheff , Walt Disney, Robert Fawcett, Al Hirschfeld , Ray Prohaska, Saul Tepper, and Sulamith Wulfing - a generation of great talent and great change. Barks' artistic training consisted of an incomplete mail order course from the Landon School and the ever-changing lessons of the Sunday comics sections of the newspaper. He learned his lessons well, but it wasn't until 1928 that he sold his first cartoons to the Calgary Eye-Opener , a Capt. Billy's Whizbang imitator out of Minneapolis. A few sales to Judge helped convince him that his dream of being an illustrator had merit. In 1930, he moved to Minneapolis and worked as a staff artist and eventually the de facto editor of the Eye-Opener

Needless to say, he was not happy with the work. He had spent five years practically writing and drawing a whole magazine at the

13. Goodbye Carl Barks
Short essay paying tribute to legacy to Disney and comic books.
http://www.geocities.com/d-patanella/carlbarks.html
Goodbye, Carl Barks
T his hasn't been the best of years for the elder statesmen of comics and animation.  Since January 2000, we've lost Charles M. Schultz and Gil Kane - to name just two of the giants we must now live without. And now, we learn that Carl Barks has passed away just shy of spending a century on earth. Disney fans have every reason to mourn. Barks was almost single-handedly responsible for the direction and style of the Donald Duck comic books from the mid 1940s until the late 1960s. Since then, his work has been reprinted multiple times in many languages, and he's found a worthy successor in current Disney comic artist Don Rosa. It's easy to overlook Barks' achievements for several reasons. Longevity allowed him to outlast much of his competition, but it also encouraged us to take him for granted. His anonymity (Disney did not allow any signatures other than the Disney trademark on Disney-created comic books) allowed him the freedom to create a wonderfully detailed world, yet also prevented many of us from giving him the credit he deserved. His work in what some call "funny animal books" guaranteed his stories a childlike innocence, but too many of us confused that with childishness. Carl Barks was worth far more than the entire stable of Image/Top Cow creators if we allow originality, story-telling ability, and audience size to be our criteria. If you ever enjoyed the TV series Ducktales , you are endebted to Carl Barks, as his comics were the major influence on that animated series.

"Donald Duck Tells About Kites"
"Bongo on the Congo"
A story Barks wrote and drew in 1960. This story was printed in a censored form in the Carl Barks Library (set 4, page 449). Mostly the text was altered. On panel 7 of page 7, however, the heads of the natives have been changed. Instead of curly black hair, they now have punk hairstyles and horned helmets. (Interesting to note is that Barks himself did the redrawing of this panel, at the request of the Carl Barks Library editors.) On panels 1 and 3 of page 8, the bone through Old Boogerbooboo's nose is removed. In panel 2 of page 8, the two Qwak Qwaks have bald heads instead of curly hair. Besides the censoring, panel 7 of page 10 was also altered. During the inking of the story Barks accidently gave Donald glasses in this panel (one of the very few instances such a thing happened), they were removed by the Carl Barks Library editors. To give the real Barks fan a chance to see the story how it originally was printed, the story can been seen here temporarily. The scans were taken from colour xeroxes supplied by a kind collector from Germany. Since page 1, 3 and 9 were not altered, they were not among them. To present a complete story, these pages were taken from the Carl Barks Library.

The Disney Oil Paintings by Carl Barks
When Carl Barks retired from doing comic books in 1966 he started painting in oil - mostly landscapes - in his newly acquired free time. A few years later, a fan asked him to do a Donald Duck in oil, and Disney, miraculously enough, okayed it. In 1976, however, Disney revoked Barks "license" to do paintings with Disney characters. He then began doing oils with cartoon-styled ducks and other waterfowl that were much like the earlier Disney paintings, but not Disney.
In 1980 the huge and luxurous book "Uncle Scrooge: His Life and Times" was released by Another Rainbow, each copy accompanied by a signed lithograph of the new painting "Wanderers of Wonderlands". Apparently, Another Rainbow had made some deal with Disney so that Barks once again was allowed to do paintings with Disney characters. From 1982 on, Another Rainbow has been releasing lithographs made from Barks paintings.
Below follows a list of Barks' oil paintings with Disney motifs
