Camden-Carroll Library's special collections include Appalachia-Kentucky books, genealogical and local history materials, photographs, oral histories, quilt patterns, Kentucky pamphlet and newspaper clipping files, and MSU archival materials. Three special collections housed separately are devoted to the works and personal items of Dr. Roger Barbour, James Still, and Jesse Stuart. A quilt pattern collection, established in 1978 when the Appalachian Collection began, now numbers over 1,300 patterns, many containing quilted blocks, as well as paper patterns, templates, and sewing directions. Quilted blocks may be viewed online at the Center for Virtual Appalachia website, in the"Culture" section. Oral histories include the Adron Doran oral history project conducted by Dr. John Kleber; Morehead area Vietnam veterans, conducted by Dr. John Hanrahan; Morehead Flood, an award-winning history class project; and Vintage Fiddlers of Eastern Kentucky, conducted by Marynell Young. The Vintage Fiddlers project is included in the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL), Kentuckiana Digital Library Collection The Roger W. Barbour Collection includes photograph and manuscript materials, reflecting Dr. Barbour's 40-year career as Kentucky's pre-eminent naturalist. The photographic collection consists of approximately 10,000 images, including selections of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, turtles, fish, woody plants, and a series taken in Rowan and surrounding counties in the period 1946-1947, depicting social life, business, and other events which capture the flavor of small town life in the early post-war years. One series of Barbour wildlife photographs is included in the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL)

    FICTION James Barbour
Rare Earth James Barbour received his M.F.A. in Creative writing from Arizona State University in 1989. His work has previously appeared in Weber Studies. "Rare Earth" is part of his as yet unpublished short story collection, Categories of Refusal. He has new work forthcoming in The River Review/LaRevue riviere, and Passages North. Especially for Mary The August camp is pitched at the toe of the Rockies, where Montana's badlands begin. Helena is an hour's drive, so when it rains, or people get tired of each other, they can get away and not sulk, or drink too much. But dry weather is a safe bet in summer; there's been good digging since May. At their latest site, Tom Bass, the chief archeologist, explains why he's going to cut through a thick layer of rock without excavating it. Mary Goddard seethes as Tom's rationalizations unwind. Don't get personal, she thinks, be professional, but at last she can't listen anymore. "—This is vandalism." "Get in the real, Mary," Tom says. "We aren't in a museum."

OAS_AD('Top'); BARBOUR COUNTY, ALABAMA LARGEST SLAVEHOLDERS FROM 1860 SLAVE CENSUS SCHEDULES and SURNAME MATCHES FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS ON 1870 CENSUS Transcribed by Tom Blake, October 2001 PURPOSE . Published information giving names of slaveholders and numbers of slaves held in Barbour County, Alabama, in 1860, is either non-existent or not readily available. It is possible to locate a free person on the Barbour County, Alabama census for 1860 and not know whether that person was also listed as a slaveholder on the slave census, because published indexes almost always do not include the slave census. Those who have found a free ancestor on the 1860 Barbour County, Alabama census can check this list to learn if their ancestor was one of the larger slaveholders in the County. If the ancestor is not on this list, the 1860 slave census microfilm can be viewed to find out whether the ancestor was a holder of a fewer number of slaves or not a slaveholder at all. Whether or not the ancestor is found to have been a slaveholder, a viewing of the slave census will provide an informed sense of the extent of slavery in the ancestral County, particularly for those who have never viewed a slave census. An ancestor not shown to hold slaves on the 1860 slave census could have held slaves on an earlier census, so those films can be checked also. In 1850, the slave census was also separate from the free census, but in earlier years it was a part of the free census. African American descendants of persons who were enslaved in Barbour County, Alabama in 1860, if they have an idea of the surname of the slaveholder, can check this list for the surname. If the surname is found, they can then view the microfilm for the details listed regarding the sex, age and color of the slaves. If the surname is not on this list, the microfilm can be viewed to see if there were smaller slaveholders with that surname. To check a master surname list for other States and Counties, return to
