Late Word from Africa We're having lunch at some chicy-chicy sort of place off Rockefeller center. Jennings, Rather, Brokaw, the print jocks and weekly editors; there've been a lot of lunches. My pitch starts with these words: "The follow-up." I see it in their eyes that glint, the young cub reporter still alive under the twelve hundred dollar Italian suit. But inside they're seething, see, they want it so bad they can taste it better than what's on their fork. But it's mine. The first interview was mine, the second's mine too, the best story to come out of Africa since the Entebbe rescue: Tarzan still alive the second exclusive interview. While the faces and the print jocks are day-dreaming about the Pulitzer prize, getting all misty-eyed about shaking "Desert Storm" sand out of their b.v.d.s, I'm drawing maps on napkins. James Barbour - Chief Executive James Barbour became chief executive of Lothian NHS Board on August 1, 2001.Prior to that he had been chief executive of Sheffield Health Authority for two-and-a-half years. Mr Barbour, 48, has spent all his working life in the National Health Service. He began as a management trainee in 1977 following vacation work as a hospital porter. Since then he has worked in a number of posts in Glasgow, at the Great Ormond Street Group of Hospitals in London, in Aberdeen and Manchester. He first became a general manager in 1986 and created Scotland's first NHS Trust in Aberdeen in 1991, serving as its chief executive until 1994. He was then appointed chief executive of Central Manchester Healthcare NHS Trust where he obtained approval for a major redevelopment of the hospitals. He took up the post of chief executive of Sheffield Health Authority in December 1998. Mr Barbour is an honorary visiting fellow of the University of Sheffield, was an honorary senior fellow of the University of Manchester and has been a Burgess of the City of Aberdeen since 1992. He is also a member of the Institute of Health Service Management and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
