About this time Barnum, with a Mr. Samuel Sherwood, of Bridgeport, started for Pittsburg, where they proposed to open a lottery office. On reaching New York, however, and talking over the scheme with friends, the venture was abandoned and the two men took, instead, a pleasure trip to Philadelphia. They stayed a week, at the end of which time they returned to New York, with exactly twenty-seven cents between them. Sherwood managed to borrow two dollarsenough to take him to Newark, where he had a cousin, who obligingly loaned him fifty dollars. The two friends remained in New York on the strength of their newly acquired wealth for several days, and then went home considerably richer in experience at least. Barnum now went into the lottery business exclusively, taking his uncle, Alanson Taylor, into partnership. They established a number of agencies throughout the country, and made good profits from the sale of tickets. Several of the tickets sold by them took prizes and their office came to be considered "lucky."

Bailey Schutte and Meghan Mulligan decided to train extra hard over the summer. Another good decision. Horton and Reid, both Sherwood High School juniors, along Schutte and Mulligan, both Lady Bowmen sophomores, proved how wise those decisions were at the Tri-Valley League cross country preview meet, held last Thursday at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District complex. Schutte, in a fantastic finish, won the girls race with Mulligan placing third. In the boys race, it was a one-two Bowmen finish as Horton won the race with Reid right behind him in second. Speaking of hard work, Schutte and Mulligan saw their summer of intensified training pay off already with their strong performances at the TVL preview meet. Not only did Schutte edge Poggi in a thrilling finish, but she also finished ahead of another TVL standout, Heather Fitz-Gustafson of The Dalles, who placed fourth.

John Bailey, ASC Biography John Bailey, ASC, studied chemistry and philosophy during his early days in college. In an earlier age, he might have become an alchemist. During his junior year, Bailey traveled to Vienna, intending to study German language and culture. It was pure luck that put him in a place and time where he became an avid fan of European art house cinema, including films by Bergman, Antonioni, Fellini, Truffaut, Bresson and other New Wave directors. When Bailey returned to the US, he enrolled in the cinema school graduate program at USC. Bailey began with a class in basic photography, taught by Sherwood "Woody" Omens, ASC, who was a student teacher at the time. Bailey focused on cinematography, deciding that it was important to learn the mechanics of the craft before he could express himself as an artist. Bailey says, in retrospect, he was never caught up in the photochemical part of the process, but instinctively learned how to appreciate and utilize the full palette available to cinematographers interested in evoking emotional responses with images. He followed what was then the traditional, arduous path for film school graduates choosing careers in cinematography.
