The little map on the current page (derived from a Dutch book on Bach: J. Rubinstein, L. Van Hasselt, and T. Koopman, Bach. It is a clickable map, which means thay you can follow the course of Johann Sebastian Bach's life by clicking the towns on the map with the mouse of your computer. If you want to follow Johann Sebastian's complete Werdegang , just start with his birthpace Eisenach (bottom left), follow the arrows, and end in Leipzig, where he died in 1750. Origianal painting in the Bachhaus Eisenach. Listen to J. S. Bach's music! Erfurt can look back on a long family tradition of the Bachs. Three sons of Hans Bach, the "Music Player of Wechmar", founded the tradition as early as the 17th century: Johann, Christoph and Heinrich were town pipers and council musicians and Johann Bach was organist at the same time at the Prediger Church. His son Ägidius later had the office in the Kaufmann Church and the Church of St. Michael. Heinrich then went to Arnstadt, and Christoph, Johann Sebastian's grandfather had three sons in Erfurt: Georg Christoph, Johann Christoph and Johann Ambrosius, the father of Johann Sebastian Bach. He married Elisabeth Lämmerhirt in 1668 in the Kaufmann Church. She was related to the mother of the Weimar organist Johann Gottfried Walther, who was later befriended with Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach himself was here once in 1716 to test the organ in the Augustiner Church and probably more often to visit his relatives. For in Erfurt too, the traditional family get-togethers took place. However a longer stay of Bach here is not known.

    Introduction
Bach's musical temperament comprises within its circle well tempered fifths and perfect fifths. This system "wohltemperirt" of J. S. Bach - the composer's own authentic spelling - is the musical tuning for Das wohltemperirte Clavier
The well-tempered fifths are (practically) all equal, being reduced by 1/5 Pythagorean comma, i. e. by about 4.7 cent. It is essential to note that Bach's system "wohltemperirt" admits all 24 keys, major and minor. Towards this aim, equal temperament is by no means a prerequisite. Through several centuries the wrong opinion prevailed, Bach's system were equal temperament! This system "wohltemperirt" of J. S. Bach - the composer's own authentic spelling - is the musical tuning for Das wohltemperirte Clavier
The method Kirnberger III represents a different unequal baroque temperament, also accessing all 24 keys. Therein, seven fifths are perfect. Four of its tempered fifths are reduced by 1/4 syntonic comma, producing a pure third c-e

    Brief Biography
    Johann Sebastian Bach
    (b. Eisenach, 1685; d. Leipzig, 1750) Bach's next position, as Music Director for the Prince Leopold of Cüthen (1717-1723), involved entirely different activities. Since the court chapel was Calvinist, there was no need for church compositions; Bach probably used the Cüthen organs only for teaching and practice. His new works were primarily for instrumental solo or ensemble, to be used as court entertainment or for instruction. Among the important compositions at Cüthen were the Brandenburg Concertos, the first volume of Das wohltemperirte Clavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier), the "French" and "English" Suites for harpsichord (although the "English" Suites may be from the Weimar period), and most of the sonatas and suites for other instruments. Bach also composed a few cantatas for special occasions (birthdays and New Years). During Bach's last decade (the 1740s), he completed or revised several large-scale projects which he had started earlier. The Well-Tempered Clavier , Vol. II; a manuscript collection of chorale preludes (known as the "Leipzig 18", comprising revisions of Weimar pieces), and the B minor Mass. Other new works showed an increased interest in fugal and canonic writing: Musikalische Opfer (Musical Offering); the canonic variations for organ on "Vom Himmel hoch"; and Die Kunst der Fuge (

Het ORGEL 96 (2000), nr. 4, 15-25 [summary] A.W. Bach possessed copies of BWV 531, 533, 539, 544, 548/2 (partly autograph), 590/1 and a collection of copies by Johann Christian Kittel. His correspondence reveals that he had studied these sources thoroughly. He guarded his collection zealously and scrupulously: for instance, he did denied Mendelssohn to make a copy of BWV 533 (Mendelssohn managed to make a copy yet, aided and abetted by his student colleague Freudenberg).

In 1733 Wilhelm Friedemann became organist in Dresden and thirteen years later at Halle (a position offered many years before to his father). Also known as the "Halle" Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann composed concertos fantasias sonatas fugues , and symphonies .
