Gene Autry In Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles this bronze plaque summarizes the life of a remarkable man. "America's Favorite Cowboy" may puzzle people who knew him as a baseball owner, if at all. There was a time, however, when that description would have been an understatement. In 1939, 1940, 1941, and the first half of 1942, no entertainer in the world was more popular than Gene Autry. Movie star, radio star, recording star, Academy Award-nominated song writer, he set attendance records at rodeos and other personal appearances in four countries. He also owned West'rn Music Publishing and part of the Flying A Rodeo company. That's what brought him back to his home territory and got a town named after him. The Early Days Orvon Gene Autry was born September 29, 1907, on a small farm near Tioga, Texas. His ancestry was French, Scottish and Irish. He father, Delbert Autry, was a tenant at the time of Gene's birth. When Gene was an infant, the family moved to Achille, Oklahoma, and later moved to Ravia, Oklahoma which is located about 20 miles east of the present town of Gene Autry. At age 16, he went to work as a baggage hauler at the depot. In return for his services, he received instruction in telegraphy form the station master, Mr.. Arthur Mayberry. Then as a vacation relief telegrapher on the Frisco Railroad, Gene filled in for regular operators from St. Louis to Southern Oklahoma. Late one night in Chelsea, Oklahoma, with few messages to handle, he was singing and strumming a guitar, when Will Rogers, the cowboy philosopher, came in to wire his daily syndicated newspaper column. The humorist was impressed by the singing and encouraged the young telegrapher to go into show business.

    AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GENE AUTRY
I was born in a little Texas town, Tioga, on September 29, 1907. About the same time I started walking. I began to ride a horse, and it wasn't very long after that when I began to plunk on a guitar. My folks moved to Ravia, Oklahoma, when I was about 15, and that's where I finished high school. During off hours I worked around the Frisco Railroad station, doing odd jobs. In return for this, the station master taught me telegraphy. I went to work for the Frisco, as a telegrapher, after graduating from high school. When the wires weren't too busy, I'd play my guitar and sing. In Sapulpa, Oklahoma, I met another railroad man who liked to sing, and we formed a team. We played at dances and parties around Sapulpa, and wrote a lot of songs together. Our first was "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine". In 1929 I went to New York, to try to get an audition with the Victor Recording Company. They listened to me, all right, and then told me to go back to Oklahoma, for some experience. I came back to Tulsa, and started singing on KVOO. They called me Oklahoma's Yodeling Cowboy. A year later I went back to New York, and went to work for the Columbia Recording Company. Art Satherley, vice-president of Columbia, then sent me over to WLS in Chicago for a try out, and I wound up staying for four years. It was fun singing on the Sears Roebuck program, the Farm and Home Hour, the National Barndance, and the other programs.

Autry, in tune with the changing times For a guitar-strummer whose seminal career moment came in an
Oklahoma telegraph office, Gene Autry wore a lot of hats strumming
his way to the American Dream. And by no means were they all of the
cowboy make and model. Autry, who died Friday at 91, was a box
office champion, World War II veteran
and one of the few baseball owners who
conjured up warm feelings. He was a
successful songwriter, investor and the only performer to rate five stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Even his recording career divided into sub-categories: country-western, holiday songs and duets with the likes of Jo Stafford and Rosemary Clooney.

He passed away at his Southern California home, a spokeswoman said. Born September 29, 1907, on a ranch in Tioga, Texas, Autry was working as a railroad telegrapher when Will Rogers heard him sing, and advised him to try show business. It was good advice. Autry parlayed a $5 mail order guitar into a career as Hollywood's first singing cowboy, appearing on radio, television and the movie screen. And his talent for performing made him his fortune. At his death he had acquired vast real estate holdings, several broadcast stations, and the American League Anaheim Angels baseball team. And it all began with a song.

Map S ince 1915, when the studio was first opened for business, an endless string of hard riding shoot-em-ups have been produced at this location. Monogram Studios made 750 "B" westerns before selling the ranch to singing cowboy Gene Autry in 1952. Legendary cowboy actors, including William S. Hart, Gary Cooper, Tom Mix, Roy Rogers, Bill Boyd, and John Wayne filmed their westerns here until 1962 when a fire swept through Placerita Canyon destroying the main western street. Gene Autry maintained the rest of the ranch for his horse Champion until the horses death in 1990. He then put the ranch up for sale and the Veluzat brothers purchased it. Melody Ranch has been brought back to life with the restoration of the famous western street. You can experience a page torn from history on the street where famous westerns were made such as, The Lone Ranger, Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, Hopalong Cassidy, Annie Oakly, Rin Tin Tin and the Cisco Kid. Yes many things have changed but the old west hasn’t…..at least not at Melody Ranch.
Melody Ranch is NOW AVAILABLE for Filming.
