Home Page Matthew Arnold and the Jesus Seminar* Tod E. Jones "Arnold’s biblical criticism," says Ruth apRoberts in Arnold and God , "may be his best literary criticism." It is, without doubt, his most vulnerable criticism, as it concerns a body of literature that has been subject to unceasing critical scrutiny of such depth and detail, and by so numerous a band of scholars, as no other literature has had to endure. Despite this vulnerabilityor rather because of it, we might find that Arnold’s biblical criticism best reveals his strength as a critic. Unfortunately, it has also been his most neglected criticism. Owen Chadwick, in The Victorian Church , observes that "few Victorian churchmen were attracted to his proposals," perceiving them merely as marking a halfway position on the road to agnosticism; likewise, agnostics regarded Arnold’s efforts as a vain attempt to redeem religion by cloaking it in the prestige of science. Arnold’s work has suffered even further neglect, as apRoberts notes, "because of the nervousness of literary academicians in approaching the Bible and because of the nervousness of the theological establishment in dealing with nonsupernaturalists like Arnold." We may locate Arnold’s biblical criticism somewhere between the religious and the modern secular approach, and there"between two worlds"we find, if not the very best of both, at least

Add to a Notebook Matthew Arnold Although remembered now for his elegantly argued critical essays, Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) began his career as a poet, winning early recognition as a student at the Rugby School where his father, Thomas Arnold, had earned national acclaim as a strict and innovative headmaster. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. In 1844, after completing his undergraduate degree at Oxford, he returned to Rugby as a teacher of classics. After marrying in 1851, Arnold began work as a government school inspector, a grueling position which nonetheless afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout England and the Continent. Throughout his thirty-five years in this position Arnold developed an interest in education, an interest which fed into both his critical works and his poetry. Empedocles on Etna (1852) and Poems (1853) established Arnold's reputation as a poet and in 1857 he was offered a position, which he accepted and held until 1867, as Professor of Poetry at Oxford. Arnold became the first professor to lecture in English rather than Latin. During this time Arnold wrote the bulk of his most famous critical works, Essays in Criticism (1865) and Culture and Anarchy (1869), in which he sets forth ideas that greatly reflect the predominant values of the Victorian era.

Arnold, Matthew
In the preface to his selection from Samuel Johnson 's Lives of the Poets, Matthew Arnold (1822-88) identifies Johnson as a central point of reference for the study of English literature. He says that Johnson provides "a fixed and thoroughly known centre of departure and return" ( Complete Hebraism and Hellenism," "culture and anarchy," "doing as one likes," "the best self," "high seriousness," "a criticism of life"are commonplace idioms even among those who could not identify their source. He is often opposed, sometimes mocked, and by those critics whose historical perspective stops short with our own generation he is usually taken as merely the personification of a now antiquated and thoroughly discredited "humanism." At the highest level of contemporary criticism, he remains the critic who is most to be reckoned with. His formulations serve either as rallying points or as standards in opposition to which one must establish one's own position.
Why is Arnold so important as a living historical presence in critical thought? There are, I think, five main reasons: his disinterested temper, the quality of his literary intelligence, the scope of his studies, his fully elaborated claim for the authority of a central Western tradition, and the deep coherence of his cultural theory.
The word "disinterested," as used in such phrases as "a disinterested effort to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world" (3:282), is now the most violently disputed word in the Arnoldian lexicon. Marxist and New Historical critical ideology, for example, make a good deal of epistemological heavy weather over this term (see

    Dover Beach
T HE sea is calm to-night,
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanch'd land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
      Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
      Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
      The sea of faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furl'd.
      But now I only hear
      Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
      Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

    Matthew Arnold: A Biography
atthew Arnold, poet and critic, was born at Laleham on the Thames, the eldest son of Thomas Arnold, historian and great headmaster of Rugby, and of Mary (Penrose) Arnold. He was educated at Winchester; Rugby, where he won a prize for a poem on "Alaric at Rome"; and Oxford, to which he went as a Scholar of Balliol College in 1841, and where he won the Newdigate Prize for "Cromwell, A Prize Poem," and received a Second Class in litterae humaniores , to the regret though hardly to the surprise of his friends. Always outwardly a worldling, he had not yet revealed the "hidden ground of thought and of austerity within" which was to appear in his poetry. "During these years," writes Thomas Arnold the younger in Passages in a Wandering Life , "my brother was cultivating his poetic gift carefully, but his exuberant, versatile nature claimed other satisfactions. His keen bantering talk made him something of a social lion among Oxford men, he even began to dress fashionably." In 1845, however, after a short interlude of teaching at Rugby, he was elected Fellow of Oriel, accounted a great distinction at Oxford since the days of

Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Matthew, , English poet and critic, son of the educator Dr. Thomas Arnold His first volume of poems, The Strayed Reveller, appeared in 1849; it was followed by Empedocles on Etna (1852). Dissatisfied with both works, he withdrew them from circulation. Poems Poems: Second Series appeared in 1855 and was followed by Merope: A Tragedy (1858) and New Poems Clough Matthew Arnold was also one of the most important literary critics of his age. From 1857 to 1867 he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford; during this time he wrote his first books of criticism, including On Translating Homer Essays in Criticism (1865; Ser. 2, 1888), and On the Study of Celtic Literature (1867). In Culture and Anarchy (1869) and Friendship's Garland (1871) he widened his field to include social criticism. Arnold's interest in religion resulted in
