Fatty and Mabel Butcher Boy Out West Back Stage Motion Picture The Fatty Arbuckle scandal, though, was more than a personal tragedy. Motion picturesand the concept of the movie "star"were still new in the early 1920s, and the Arbuckle scandal gave movie fans a rude wake-up call. For the first time, Americans saw the dark side of stardom. Drunk with fame and wealth, actors could abuse their power and commit horrible crimesindeed, as many social reformers had claimed, Hollywood might be a breeding ground for debauchery. In the face of this threat, the movie industry established a series of codes controlling the conduct of actors and the content of films, which culminated in the Production Code of the 1930s. The industry hoped to project an image of wholesomeness, but in the wake of the Arbuckle scandal, the public remained unconvinced. Although American audiences still continued to be entranced by the Hollywood "dream factory," they would never put their faith in movie stars in the way they had before 1921. The Gift Shop San Francisco Police Department booking photograph, or "mug shot," of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, taken shortly after his arrest for the death of Virginia Rappe. Rooms 1219-1221 of San Francisco's plush St. Francis Hotel were the setting of the silent film star's 1921 Labor Day weekend party where the victim was either injured, or suffered from a botched abortion. Miss Rappe, variously described as a "starlet," or "call girl," died of peritonitis four days after she was allegedly attacked by Arbuckle at the lavish party. The Hearst press, led by the San Francisco Examiner, sensationalized the already sensational, and Arbuckle suffered through three trials before he was acquitted. Public Reaction
The Trials
When knowledge that Roscoe Arbuckle had been arrested for murder, the national press - led by William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Examiner - had a field day. One must remember that yellow journalism was common in this era.
Banner headlines, proclaiming lurid innuendoes about Arbuckle's private life, filled newspaper dailies throughout the nation for weeks. Even The New York Times, known for it's having "all the news fit to print," went out of its way to incriminate Arbuckle.
Later, W. R. Hearst would brag - in front of Buster Keaton - that he'd sold more newspapers on the Arbuckle case than on the sinking of the Lusitania.
The public reaction to these headlines was swift and brutal. Women's groups across the United States condemned Arbuckle for his "immorality." As far as the public was concerned, Roscoe Arbuckle had already been found guilty of murder.
Meanwhile, San Francisco's District Attorney Matthew Brady - basking in the publicity of a murder trial that would only be matched by the O. J. Simpson trial of 1994 - found out that his key witness, Maude Delmont, was lying. Every time Delmont talked about what happened in the hotel room, she gave a different story. Nevertheless, Brady insisted on going on with the case.
Using third degree methods, Brady publicly (in front of a grand jury) threatened another woman, Zey Prevon, with perjury if she refused to agree with an unsigned police statement alleging that Virginia Rappé said that "Roscoe hurt her."
