There were no first-hand witnesses, and he, denying all, escaped prosecution through two hung juries and a mistrial. His reputation today? Recently, Kino Video has remastered two volumes of Arbuckle's 1917-1920 two-reel shorts, which he directed and starred in for Paramount Pictures, and all of which co-star his pal, Buster Keaton. Arbuckle is a nimble talent, comfortable with his 266-pound rhino frame, whether chasing a young sweet thing, doing somersaults, or prancing about in drag. His rubbery baby face and barndoor rear both figure in the action. A special treat: commissioned original music by Boston's own Alloy Orchestra, stretching beyond percussion and electric piano with banjo, accordion, and even Theremin. It's highly likely that Virginia Rappe, the girl in question who died of peritonitis five days after the alleged attack, wasn't sexually assaulted at all, but died as a result of a ruptured bladder arising from venereal disease. Arbuckle's infamy, now seemingly imprinted on the consciousness of those for whom his name is still recognisable, is largely the result of the gutter press of the day - to whom, much as today, guilt or innocence was irrelevant as long as a big name could be attached to a salacious scandal - and books like Hollywood Babylon , which have gone out of their way to propagate the scandal. Roscoe Conklin Arbuckle was born on 24th March 1887, in Smith Center, Kansas, and weighed in at a staggering 14 (or even 16 according to some sources) lbs. Hardly surprisingly, his poor mother was never quite the same afterwards, a fact for which Roscoe's alcoholic father held the boy to blame. Arbuckle's father, William Goodrich (a pseudonym Arbuckle would adopt when directing movies after the Rappe scandal had wrecked his acting career), also suspected he was not the boy's biological father, due to the fact that Roscoe was the only fatty in the family. It's unlikely that Goodrich's suspicions were correct but, nevertheless, he was cruel to the boy both emotionally and physically, and when Roscoe's mother died when he was 12, his father abandoned him.
