Roscoe Arbuckle
Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle March 24 June 29 ) was an American silent film comedian who gained the nickname "Fatty" from his portly frame and who is best known for his involvement in the "Fatty Arbuckle scandal". He began his career with the Selig Polyscope Company in and soon after that he was a star in the Keystone Kops comedies, eventually leaving and starring in a series of short films that won him acclaim and fortune around the world; at the height of his popularity, he was outshone only by Charlie Chaplin . He also played together with Chester Conklin He discovered Buster Keaton and made him a star; the duo became fast friends off the set. Roscoe Arbuckle's career is seen by many film historians as one of the great tragedies of Hollywood . At the height of his career, he suddenly found himself arrested and placed on trial for his role in the death of rising starlet Virginia Rappe - a charge he was acquitted of, though the case had to be tried three times before Arbuckle was pronounced innocent. The resulting infamy destroyed his career and his personal life. His case has been examined by scholars and historians over the years, and it is widely believed by most serious historians that Arbuckle was indeed an innocent man. The Arbuckle case was one of three major scandals that rocked Hollywood, and led to calls for reform of the "indecency" being promoted by motion pictures. It resulted in the creation of the

Oh No!
Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle In 1921, Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle was one of the great silent film comedians when he was charged with the rape and resulting death of an obscure 25-year-old starlet named Virginia Rappe at a drunken party on Labor Day weekend. The details and rumors were shocking, that Arbuckle had torn Virginia's insides with his 266-pound weight; that his drunkenness had alternately rendered him unable to perform, whereupon he angrily violated the girl with a wine bottle, or a Coke bottle, or worst of all, with a jagged piece of ice. Arbuckle was acquitted in his third trial. He was free, but his career was over, and he died in 1933 having never regained his former popularity. Choose Your Oh No!

Notorious SF: Fatty Arbuckle
335 Powell Street On Labor Day, September 5, 1921, silent film star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and a roommate, Fred Fishbach, entertained guests in their 12th floor suite, rooms 1219, 1220, and 1221 at the St. Francis Hotel on Powell Street. Arbuckle , a popular performer who had written, directed and appeared in dozens of films, was nonplused when the party was crashed by disreputable starlet Virginia Rappe , but the actress was allowed to stay. (Rappe was known to have had five abortions before the age of 16 and was expelled from the Keystone studio by mogul Mack Sennett because Rappe had been spreading venereal disease throughout the lot.) Another woman of questionable character, Maude Delmont, who had been previously charged by police as an extortionist and racketeer, was also in attendance at the St. Francis suite. When Rappe became violently ill from internal injuries related to bladder dysfunction, Arbuckle assumed she had had too much to drink. Arbuckle and the others tended to Rappe, who was alternately vomiting and writhing with pain. When Rappe died four days later, Delmont spread the word that Arbuckle had raped and crushed the woman. The story stuck and twelve weeks later, Arbuckle was placed on trial by San Francisco District Attorney Matthew Brady. Fueled by inflammatory coverage in William Randolph Hearst's Examiner, Arbuckle was convicted in the eyes of the public though Brady's case was so weak that a judge reduced the charge from murder to manslaughter as Delmont's conflicting stories fell apart.

Silent Film Clips Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle (1887-1933) Silent film comedian Roscoe "Fatty Arbuckle" was born Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle in Galveston, Texas on March 24th, 1887 and educated in St. Louis, Missouri. At age eight Roscoe appeared on the stage for the first time. His first roles were with the Webster-Brown Stock Company. He was on the stage performing everything from acrobatic acts to clown acts to a singing act, performing illustrated songs for Sid Grauman at the Unique Theater, San Jose. He also worked for the Morosco Burbank stock company and traveled throughout China and Japan with the Ferris Hartman company. He even managed his own stock company for a time. Roscoe eventually went to work for Mack Sennett's studio Keystone circa 1909 starting at $40 a week. He appeared in hundreds of one-reel comedies. He played mostly policeman, usually with the Keystone Kops. He learned about the process of making movies from talented director Henry Lehrman, who directed all but two of his films. FATTY ARBUCKLE at KEYSTONE Vol. 1
Roscoe Arbuckle, affectionately known to the world as "Fatty" Arbuckle, was probably Sennett's first major discovery and it was Arbuckle who took the Keystones to the next level in comedy development after Sennett got it started. Certainly he was a major influence on Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton, who all got their start in Arbuckle films. "FATTY AND MABEL ADRIFT" is classic era Arbuckle with developed characters, superior photography, and exciting climaxes. "FATTY JOINS THE FORCE" speaks for itself with Roscoe becoming a Keystone Cop . Unfortunately he gets no respect from the local kids in the neighborhood and winds up in jail himself! In "THE SPEED KINGS"

ROSCOE "FATTY" ARBUCKLE

D uring his tenure at Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios, Fatty Arbuckle starred in well over 100 shortsand all these shorts were filmed during little more than three years. Such a frenzied pace didn't allow for many subtleties. Indeed, the Keystone shorts are some of the most manic comedies ever committed to celluloid. Filled with pratfalls, pie fights, and chases, the Keystone comedies piled action upon action with nary a moment of quiet. From all signs, Arbuckle accepted the Keystone comic credo with few complaints: "I endeavor to cater to the masses as well as the classes, not forgetting the kids. Children like the purely physical comedythe fall and the knockdownand the more exaggerated the action, the more they laugh. The average person watching a comedy on the screen does not want to be compelled to thinkto figure out a piece of businessso that there is always a little hesitancy in dealing with satire and the little subtleties that are enjoyed by the clever people. When Arbuckle broke ranks with Sennett in 1917 to make comedies for producer Joseph M. Schenck, he finally had the opportunity to show the distance between the Sennett approach and his own. However, if anything, Arbuckle's own shorts are even more manic than Sennett's. They're a madhouse of commotionwhich is surprising considering the presence of Buster Keaton. Arbucle had enlisted Keaton's support after seeing his stage act. He felt Keaton's amazing pratfalls and quiet presence would work well with his own predilection for physical comedy. Keaton dropped his stage career entirely for a stint with Arbuckle. Although new to film, Keaton took an immediate interest in the production process. One of his first actions was to completely dismantle a camera so that he could better understand how it operated.
