FATTY ARBUCKLE Starring with such famous contemporaries as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle was an immensely talented and admired comedian during the silent film era. Born in Smith Center, Kansas on March 24, 1887, and given the name "Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle", Fatty was a big man with an original and energetic comedic style. He was involved with the influential Keystone films, which were directed by Mack Sennett. Arbuckle had a full and successful career, until he became mixed up in a devastating Hollywood scandal in 1921, and became the first actor ever to be blacklisted under the Hays Code.
Growing up in Kansas, Fatty did not have a good relationship with his father who was abusive towards him. In 1888, the family moved to Santa Ana, California where his mother soon died, and Fatty's father deserted him. He supported himself working in a hotel, and there he met a friend who convinced him to enter an amateur singing contest. Fatty won the contest, yet an even greater fortune resulted from that night: Fatty Arbuckle was discovered by a talent scout. From there, Arbuckle joined a vaudeville group and made a living with his singing and dancing act. Fatty spent his days touring with the Pantages theater circuit, and in 1909 made his first movie appearance in "Ben's Kid". Around this time he also got married to singer/actress Minta Durfee, before traveling the world for a few years performing on tour. Back in the U.S., Arbuckle joined the Keystone film company, where he would eventually meet Charlie Chaplin. "Slapstick" comedy had come out of vaudeville, but Keystone added its own unique style and helped slapstick to gain great popularity. After appearing in the 1913 film "The Gangsters", Fatty Arbuckle became a favorite with audiences and was quickly becoming a big star.

Bio of Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle
Roscoe Conkling Arbucke was born on March 24, 1887 in Smith Center, Kansas. His family was a poor one, constantly struggling and on the move. When baby Roscoe was just one year old they moved to California. Roscoe would grow into a stocky, overweight child. The nickname ‘Fatty’ was given him by local children and was to stick for life. In his late teens Roscoe began to acquire a name for himself in the entertainment industry as a singer. In this capacity he was to entertain in dance halls. His life was changed forever in 1912 when he met Mack Sennet, the owner of a fledgling movie production company known as the Keystone Film Company. In Arbuckle, Sennet saw the makings of a slap stick comedian. He was soon featuring Roscoe in his two-reel silent comedies. When Sennet developed the Keystone Cops, Arbuckle was featured as one of the mainstays. Arbuckle’s popularity with the audiences was immediate. He soon had his own headline in the “Fatty and Mabel” series of films, which co-starred Mack Sennet’s girlfriend Mabel Normand. He also starred in films with Charlie Chaplin and with Buster Keaton. In 1916, Arbuckle defected to the Paramount Pictures Studios. Here he was offered the unique privilege of having complete artistic control over his movies. The Comique Film Corporation was created to accommodate this. Arbuckle’s movie success escalated over the next few years. By 1920 he was making seven reel features. In early 1921 Paramount was so convinced of Arbuckle’s goldmine potential that they offered him a 3 year deal at the unheard of rate of $1 million per year.

The "Fatty" Arbuckle Scandal
The Trials
With the scandal as front page news on almost every newspaper, it was difficult to get an unbiased jury. The first Arbuckle trial began in November 1921 and charged Arbuckle with manslaughter. The trial was thorough and Arbuckle took the stand to share his side of the story. The jury was hung with a 10 to 2 vote for acquittal. Because the first trial ended with a hung jury, Arbuckle had to be tried again. In the second Arbuckle trial, the defense did not present a very thorough case and Arbuckle did not take the stand. The jury saw this as an admission of guilt and deadlocked in a 10 to 2 vote for conviction. In the third trial, which began in March 1922, the defense again became pro-active. Arbuckle testified, repeating his side of the story. The main prosecution witness, Zey Prevon, had escaped house arrest and left the country. For this trial, the jury deliberated for only a couple of minutes and came back with a verdict of not guilty. Additionally, the jury wrote an apology to Arbuckle:

    A.k.a: Fatty Arbuckle
    Category: Show Biz
Claim To Fame: Film star of yesteryear, starred in the original Brewster's Millions as well as Butcher Boy , working for Buster Keaton as well as writing some of his own scripts and later directed. Most notorious for "the incident" surrounding Virginia Rappe , a starlet who showed up uninvited to one of his parties, and then fell ill and died a few days later. Arbuckle was charged with rape and manslughter in connection with her death and tried no less than three times. Where are they now?
Although acquitted after the three trials, his career was pretty well ruined by the scandal (disproving the old adage "no such thing as bad press"). He directed a few comedies for the likes of Buster Keaton under the alias William Goodrich and starred in some comedy shorts for Warner Brothers in 1932. The shorts were successful and Warner signed him to a feature film contract, however Arbuckle died in his sleep at age 46, the night after he signed the contract.

    A Gift for Comedy
Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle The gifted comedian Roscoe Conkling “Fatty” Arbuckle didn’t use the weight that inspired his nickname to get a cheap, easy laugh. He would never be seen stuck in a doorway or chair, for example. While his weight inevitably added to his humor his comic gifts elevated him beyond fat jokes. In the silent film era, he was considered second only to Charlie Chaplin in his talent. The big, agile man whose talent for pratfalls, somersaults, and extraordinary pie throwing brought joy to audiences of all ages. But one fateful night, at a Labor Day party in San Francisco, the laughter stopped. Arbuckle was accused of a horrific crime, the tale of which would haunt him until his dying day
