Martin Amis is famous for titles like London Fields, Time's Arrow, and The Rachel Papers.
Had Martin Amis never published a word, he would still have occupied a place in literary history as the son of english writer Kingsley Amis, famous for works including Lucky Jim. Martin Amis was born on the 25th of August 1949 In fact, his childhood was turbulent as his family moved from Swansea in South Wales, to Princeton in the US to Majorca in Spain, onto Jamaicia in the West Indies for a spell, and finally back to North London. Martin Amis' father divorced his mother when Martin was 16 and remarried famous english writer Elizabeth Jane Howard. Martin then attended Oxford University from 1969 to 1973 where, as his father had before him, he achieved a formal 'first' in literature. Following a deal with his english tutor at Oxford, Jonathan Wordsworth, Amis took year off to write a novel. The work, subsequently made into a film, was the Rachel Papers and won Amis the Somerset Maugham award for Literature at the age of twenty-four. This again echoed his father's career as Kinglsey had also been awarded the same tribute for his first novel. bodyOffer(17679) Amis' subsequent book, Dead Babies, recounted the life of drugs and sex in a communal household and was also made into a film. He was then recruited to write for film, including the screenplay for the unsuccessful science-fiction film starring Kirk Douglas, Saturn Five. Amis also had short periods of tenure at literary journals, writing reviews for the Observer, the Time Literary Supplement, the New Statesman and the New Review.

(from The Antioch Review Fall 1994)
Martin Amis's novels feature heroes of playboy fantasies, unscrupulous upwardly-mobile yobs, and charismatic murderers. With a mixture of anxiety and fascination, Amis chronicles the "cheapening of humanity," a phenomenon he attributes, partly, to the uniquely twentieth century prospect of total annihilation and partly to the fact that much of American (and more lately British) life is dedicated to televised "event glamour"a phrase borrowed from Amis's mentor, Saul Bellow. Both writers maintain that popular sporting/religious extravaganzas give a false sense of collective life experience. Moreover, says Amis, channel-hoppers skip through tabloid journalism shows, cursory reports of sex scandals and riots, and mini-series on serial killers, delighting only in unsavory special effects. "It's a distracted age," Amis notes gravely; "the narrative line in human life is gone," and with it, he suggests, human decency ("Modernity"). Because the "decline of the West" is Amis's subject, he has earned a bad reputation for playing the social critic, or if you prefer, for being a quixotic champion of bygone values. Then, before I knew it, all sorts of other things and other feelings were presenting themselves. It certainly got longer than I thought it was going to be. And it came fast. It came at more than twice the rate of a novel. A novel that length would have taken me four years. That took 18 months. Because I'd done half the work by living it." Martin Amis is tired. Near the end of a 30 city tour promoting his new book, the memoir Experience , Amis exudes and embodies exhaustion. A diminutive man with an appearance that is somehow surprisingly frail in a writer of this stature (as though a writer should somehow be as large as his reputation. Were that the case, Amis would be as big and imposing as a country manor). In fact, his appearance is surprising in all ways. There is more to his mien of aging rock musician than world-class author.

A great deal of precious energy is wasted in this way, and energy has a peculiar importance, perhaps especially where American male authors are concerned. Saul Bellow thought that "the code of the athlete, of the tough boy," was "an American inheritance ... from the English gentleman that curious mixture of striving, asceticism and rigor, the origins of which some trace back to Alexander the Great." Nowadays there is evidence that some Englishmen are trying to retrieve their lost virtue, and the way they go about it is to imitate American energy. Nothing is more inventive or changes as fast as American slang, and nobody notices and imitates it more promptly than certain English writers. A whole generation of sophisticated English readers believes that nowadays the best writing in the language is American Don DeLillo, Elmore Leonard, and, to go back a little, Saul Bellow.

Amis, Martin A Pronunciation Key Amis, Martin Amis . The younger Amis, who turned from literary journalism to fiction, invites comparison with his father through his choice of career and style. Often writing satire so bitterly sardonic that it goes far beyond the caustic comedy of his father's fiction, he has exposed the darker aspects of contemporary English society in his novels. Among them are The Rachel Papers Dead Babies Money London Fields Time's Arrow The Information (1995), and Yellow Dog (2003). His short-story collections include Heavy Water and Other Stories (1999). Among his nonfiction works are (2001), a selection of essays, and Koba the Dread (2002), an examination of Stalinism's horrors and the attitudes of Western intellectuals toward the Soviet regime.
