Richard McKenna High School Dedication
by Jim Alexander It is my pleasure to speak to you today on behalf of the Board of Trustees of School District 193. Today, however, I am proud to report to you as a soldier in the army of General Jose Luis Madarieta. I also thank Rick Ardinger of the Idaho Humanities Council and Alan Virta, director of BSU Special Collections for their help in retrieving and archiving these special documents. At first we referred to this school simply as the alternative school, then as Academy 2000, but as the millennium drew closer, we knew the name would have to change, so why Richard McKenna? Having grown up in Mountain Home myself, I found Richard McKenna to be a complete mystery. His name would surface from time to time, but how does one identify with someone unidentifiable? I was 13 years old when The Sand Pebbles was published. Our teachers told us that it was written by a man born and reared right here. But that was where it all stopped. I vaguely remember when he and Eva came for his class reunion, and the articles written by Bob Lorimar in the Mountain Home News, but first hand knowledge of Richard McKenna seemed almost nonexistent. I seriously doubted that we would find anything, but that was before I knew Jose and Shirley Lectka. They located Louise and Jimmy Crain, Tom Dorton , a shipmate of McKenna’s and membership chairman of the Yangtze River Patrol, and Dr. David Grover, historian of the Yangtze River Patrol . They also contacted the Department of the Navy as well as shipmates. The pieces of the puzzle fell together and I publicly thank each and every correspondent for the extraordinary compassion and consideration shown us.

Meeting Hugh O'Brian
Rosemont, Illinois
May 19, 2002
By Jim Alexander
The room opened at 10, and shortly after it opened, I spoke with an individual that I'm guessing (though I could be wrong) was O'Brian's business manager regarding a potential interview, etc. She said that O'Brian would discuss doing an interview when he got there... and that he was late because he normally utilized Sunday mornings to conduct a certain amount of HOBY (O'Brian's Youth Organization) business.
Shortly after 11, I saw the back of O'Brian's head from the opposite end of the dealer's room. It was a thrill knowing that he was thereand that he'd actually made it (the pessimistic side of me was telling me that SOMETHING would prevent him from attending), and I would have a chance to meet him. He had a steady stream of autograph seekers for about an hour, and since I knew that I'd take a while at his table... I let the "crowds" die down.
When the traffic dissipated, I approached (wearing my logo-embroidered shirt), and introduced myself, mentioning my interest in SEARCH. Upon my mentioning the series, O'Brian said, "That was a lot of fun to do," letting it appear that he had fond memories of the show. I brought up the www.probecontrol.com web page, and described it, and some of the features it contained. I showed him a print-out I'd done of the opening page of the site, and told him that John and Bryan and Don had archived film clip frames, scripts, QuickTime movies, Press Materials, and much more.

Before that, I was part of the corporate rat race until I realized that my family was more important than my career, or money! Relationships are built on many pillars including openness, honesty, integrity and commitment. A good sense of humor also helps. We discovered that Don and Barbara shared the same values as we did and were in principle attempting to achieve similar objectives. They displayed the qualities we were looking for and so were convinced that we could go forward from there. The training started on arrival after a 22 hour flight from South Africa, my internet didn't work and we eventually studied charts over an international telephone line. I don't think I left the hotel room for those two days, slept very little and ate sandwiches provided by Barbara. But we eventually got the job done and I flew home. Along the road, we have interacted with many different types of people in a variety of working relationships from employees to bank managers and CEO's. Today, after the businesses have been sold, we still have contact with some of these people and our lives are richer for having met them. So how did Don and I meet?

LEGISLATION BIOGRAPHICAL INFO PHOTOS ... PRESS Sen. Lamar Alexander's remarks on the Senate floor regarding James "Jim" Clayton April 11, 2003 I rise today to pay tribute to an outstanding Tennessean, James L. Clayton, better known as Jim. Jim Clayton is the son of a sharecropper and was raised in West Tennessee. This impressive Tennessean has lived the American dream of Horatio Alger. From his most humble beginnings, he has gone on to become one of the wealthiest men in the United States. Mr. Clayton is the entrepreneur behind Clayton Homes, Inc., a $1.2 billion manufactured-housing company, which is one of Tennessee's great economic treasures. Last week, Warren Buffett, the widely respected head of Berkshire Hathaway, recognized what we in Tennessee have long known about the quality of Clayton Homes by offering $1.7 billion for the purchase of Clayton Homes' manufactured-home empire. Mr. Clayton has served as Chairman of the Board of Clayton Homes, Inc., since he founded the original Clayton auto sales companies in 1956. In 1966, he expanded and branched out into manufactured housing and sold his automobile dealerships in 1981. The Clayton Homes corporate headquarters in is located in the county of my hometown, Blount County, Tennessee. Clayton Homes employs 2,500 Tennesseans who work in its sales centers and factories in excellent jobs. Thousands more Tennesseans are employed in good jobs as a result, direct and indirect, of Clayton Homes. And I am pleased to say that as a result of the negotiations, Berkshire Hathaway has agreed to leave Clayton Homes and its employees in Tennessee.

Jim Crow at EPA: Driving Ms. Browner
November 22, 2000
Over the past eight years, Environmental Protection Agency director Carol Browner has visited Chicago more than a dozen times. Each time she comes to the Windy City, Browner has requested that Ronald Harris, an EPA staffer at the Region 5 headquarters, serve as her driver and gofer. At first, Harris felt honored. But then he began to wonder if he wasn't being singled out for malign reasons. Harris is black. When confronted by these problems, Carol Browner shrugged as if to say 'What's the big deal?' "I look forward to going to Chicago so that Mr. Harris can drive me," Browner testified at an Oct. 4 hearing before the House Committee on Science, which was investigating charges of whistle-blower abuse inside the federal government. The big deal is that racism appears to be running rampant throughout Browner's agency, and she has done nothing to stem it. Take the case of Anita Nickens, who works as a mid-level staffer at the EPA's American Indian Environmental Office. In 1993, she was one of six EPA employees on a staff retreat at a lodge on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina. She was the only black in the group. Just prior to Carol Browner's arrival at the lodge, a supervisor instructed Nickens to go and scrub the toilet. "Director Browner does not use the toilet behind anyone else." Nickens was told. Nickens says she was repulsed by the order, but did the job because she feared retaliation. Later, she overheard her supervisor bragging about this humiliating order to others. "I went back into my room, locked myself in and cried," Nickens recalls. "I was so embarrassed, and blamed myself for giving in to that request. I feel like I let down other black women. " When Nickens filed a complaint, she was punished by the agency.

ALEXANDER, JAMES MINOR (1867-1954). James Minor Alexander, builder and physician, was born on September 18, 1867, in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to James Franklin and Elizabeth (Minor) Alexander. He attended the Kentucky School of Medicine and graduated with honors in 1889 from Louisville Medical College. Later he did postgraduate work in New York, at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and in 1913 in hospitals in London, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Berlin. In 1889 he moved to Victoria, Texas, then to Abilene, where he started a practice. He opened Alexander Sanitarium, a hospital with eighteen beds, on June 1, 1904, in a two-story frame building. In 1918 he converted the structure into a school for nurses and moved his hospital into an adjacent three-story brick building with forty beds. He was joined in his Abilene practice by his brother, Dr. Sydney McLemore Alexander. Jim Alexander was credited with many medical firsts in West Texas, including the first Caesarean operation and the first two complete hysterectomies. He installed Abilene's first X-ray equipment. He closed his sanitarium in 1934 to join the staff of Hendrick Medical Center, qv where he later became chief of staff. He was a member of the Taylor-Jones County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association
