William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" is a play in which a man by the name of
Macbeth, who is presented as a mature man with an uncertain character. At the beginning
of the story, Macbeth's character was a character with strong morals. As the play went on
though, Macbeth's morality lessened immensely. After killing Duncan he was very
paranoid and feared the consequences that would arise. He knew what he had done
wrong. In comparing Duncan's murder with his best friend, Banquo's murder, He was
much more relaxed after Banquo's death. His character shifted throughout the play.
Macbeth, at this point did anything to keep his crown, even so far as to getting killed for
it! I think that some sort of anatomy of evil was responsible for Macbeth's as well as other
characters' wrongdoings in the story. Each character in the story had to either fight it or

    Web Lecture #2
    African Grove Theater
Lesson Overview This online lecture will discuss the first African American theater company in the United States, the African Grove Theater. Free Blacks established the theater in New York City in 1821. Even though the company folded after only two years of play production, the theater was important because it provided an opportunity for African Americans to present plays that gave them dignity. The lecture will also discuss the arrival of African Americans in the United States and the lifestyles that determined their daily activities.

African American Presence in the United States
Most African Americans arrived in the United States as enslaved people between 1619 and 1808. Many were transported to work on small farms and plantations in the South however; many African Americans also earned their freedom and worked for small landowners or in the households of town dwellers. Between 1800 and 1810 the number of free Blacks in the United States doubled. By 1810, 75 percent of the African Americans who lived in the urban north were free. They were concentrated in the cities of New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Free Blacks in the north generally worked as domestic servants or in subsistence farming. There were some who worked as skilled artisans in trades such as blacksmithing or carpentry. Some free blacks also worked on the docks and in the shipping industry loading and unloading boats. The two men who founded the African Grove Theater, William Henry Brown and James Hewlett, were stewards who worked on ships. Through their work, they were able to travel back and forth between England, New York, and the Caribbean and to see theatrical productions.

Book Review Everyday Life During the Civil War , by Michael J. Varhola
The Smithsonian Associates Civil War E-Mail Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 8 Although the book is subtitled, "A Guide for Writers, Students and Historians," it is no ordinary reference book. It is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the minutiae of American life during the Civil War. The book begins with the basicsthe status of each state in and out of the Union, as well as the territories. Varhola recounts each area's history, its population and ethnic make-up at the time, its educational facilities, and its role during the Civil War. Among the fact-filled chapters is one on wages and currency. For instance, government clerks earned $16 per week; teachers $2 per student per month; and, Union nurses $12 per month. Government clerks have seen quite a few raises since then, but some would argue that teachers and nurses haven't. What could that money buy? In the midst of the war, shortages notwithstanding, the better dressed city lady would have to spend the following: Boots at $50; bonnet at a minimum of $25; merino dress at $150; cotton stockings at $6; all this and more if we include the many petticoats, the requisite camisole and chemise, fan, shawl, usually a parasol, and an overcoat or cape. (You'll even find out what a chemise is). Each major clothing item, for men or women, cost many times a soldier's pay of $1 to $13 per month.
