John B. Cade Library Black History Theme 2003: The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month. " What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied—or even documented—when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.
Blacks Absent from History Books
We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson . Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population—and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Established Journal of Negro History
Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history.

Biography
The exact date and birthplace of Ira Aldridge have been objects of some speculation. Herbert Marshall, in his book Ira Aldridge: The Negro Tragedian, feels that evidence points to the fact that Aldridge was born in New York on the 24th of July 1807. Legend has it that Aldridge’s forefathers were princes of the Fulah tribe in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Aldridge’s father, Daniel Aldridge, was taken to America by a missionary and sent to school at Schenectady College, New York. Some sources say that Ira was born after Daniel Aldridge returned to his native land with his American black wife. Nine years later civil war broke out in Senegal, and the family fled to America. Other stories have it that Daniel Aldridge was actually a slave and was born in New York in 1772. Ira Aldridge went to the African Free School in New York City and at an early age developed an interest in the theater. He took odd jobs and raised money for a ticket to the fourth gallery of the Park Theater, where he saw the great American and British actors. He made his first appearance as Rolla in Pizzaro at the African Theater in New York and went on to play Shakespeare’s Romeo and later on Hamlet. His performance as Hamlet was seen by Charles Matthews, a member of Charles Dickens’s circle. Matthews later parodied this performance and Ira’s rendition of the song "Opossum Up a Gum Tree," which was a sort of national anthem of the Negroes. Aldridge’s realization that Negro actors in New York were ridiculed, and that even amateur attempts on their part aroused jealousy, led him to emigrate to England.

Aldridge, Ira Frederick, 1807(?)-1867 Ira Aldridge (full name Ira Frederick Aldridge), a Black American actor who promoted himself on stage as an African prince from Senegal, was born either in New York, NY, or Belair, MD, in August 1807(?) to Daniel and Lurona Aldridge. The younger of two brothers, he attended the African Free School in New York. Ira was one of the pioneers of the African (Grove) Theatre that was founded in New York in 1821. It was at that theatre that he debuted as Rolla in August von Kotzebue's Pizarro . He played a number of small roles in Shakespeare under the tutelage of James Hewlett before he accepted a job as a steward on a ship bound for England in 1824/1825. Reports that he studied at Glasgow University remain unconfirmed. In October 1825, Ira appeared at the Coburg Theatre in London, using such promotional stage names as "Mr. Keene," the "African Roscius," and the "African Prince." Though only moderately successful on the London stage, the roles he played in Othello, Oroonoko, The Padlock
