Marcus Garvey
Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in Jamaica in 1887, of peasants of pure African stock. At an early age, he devoted himself to securing advancement for his race. In 1914, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and two years later went to New York, where he set up a branch of the Association and began publishing the militant weekly Negro World Bob Marley Catch a Fire , which was a modest success. Though carrying out other musical work - for singer Johnny Nash, for example - Marley continued to record and tour with The Wailers. His songwriting skills developed apace; in 1974 Eric Clapton had a hit with Marley's I Shot the Sheriff and in 1975 The Wailers had their first major hit with No Woman No Cry Exodus , which featured Marley's biggest hits, including Jamming, Waiting in Vain

Educated at New York's African Free School and briefly at University of Glasgow, Scotland. Active in New York amateur theatre. Made his professional stage debut as the first black actor at Royal Coburg Theatre, London on 10th October 1825 playing role of Prince Oroonoko of Africa sold into slavery in melodrama The Revolt of Surinam, or A Slave's Revenge. Ira Aldridge This date commemorates the birth of Ira Frederick Aldridge in 1807. He was an African-American actor, considered one of the greatest interpreters of his day.
His place of birth has been listed as Africa, and Bel Air, Maryland, some accounts of his life in the United States are inconsistent. Because of the lack of schools for African-Americans in Maryland, Aldridge moved to New York and attended the African Free School and Schenectady College. The great British-American actor James William Wallack is believed to have hired him as a personal attendant while visiting the United States. It was at Schenectady that Aldridge became interested in acting. He raised money and moved to Glasgow, Scotland.
He studied at the University of Glasgow, developing voice projection and dramatic skills. Aldridge began to study for the stage, moving to England in the mid-1820s. In 1833 he made a highly successful debut in London as Othello at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. Billed as the "African Roscius," after the great Roman comic actor, he made triumphant tours of Europe in several Shakespearean roles, including Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. After 1853, he played mostly in Europe, receiving honors from the Emperor of Austria, in Switzerland, and in Russia, among others.
Aldridge was planning a trip back to the United States, but it is doubtful that he ever returned; he became an English citizen in 1863. Aldridge was the first African-American to become a knight. He married twice and was divorced once. At the Shakespearean Memorial Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon, England, a chair is dedicated to the memory of Ira Aldridge. He died on August 7th, 1867 in Lódz, Poland.

But he had to leave the United States to do it. By the time he died in Poland, he had become a British citizen and taken on the trappings and fortune of a true star. Who knows what influence he might have exerted had he decided to return to America. Said to have been born in West Africa, Aldridge was educated in the exclusive Afro-American Free School, No. 2 in New York City. Founded by the forward looking Society for the Manumission of Slaves, this school provided a solid education for black citizens many of whom were to go on to play a prominent role in American society. It was located near the old Park Theater where the gallery was reserved for blacks. Young Aldridge no doubt could have seen Thomas Cooper, James Wallack, the elder

Aldridge, Ira Frederick, 1807(?)-1867 Ira Aldridge (full name Ira Frederick Aldridge), a Black American actor who promoted himself on stage as an African prince from Senegal, was born either in New York, NY, or Belair, MD, in August 1807(?) to Daniel and Lurona Aldridge. The younger of two brothers, he attended the African Free School in New York. Ira was one of the pioneers of the African (Grove) Theatre that was founded in New York in 1821. It was at that theatre that he debuted as Rolla in August von Kotzebue's Pizarro . He played a number of small roles in Shakespeare under the tutelage of James Hewlett before he accepted a job as a steward on a ship bound for England in 1824/1825. Reports that he studied at Glasgow University remain unconfirmed. In October 1825, Ira appeared at the Coburg Theatre in London, using such promotional stage names as "Mr. Keene," the "African Roscius," and the "African Prince." Though only moderately successful on the London stage, the roles he played in Othello, Oroonoko, The Padlock

Ira Frederick Aldridge: Shakesperian actor
Biography of Ira Aildrige, Shakespearian actor, one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated actors and the first American actor to perform in Russia.
Ira Frederick Aldridge was born on July 25, 1807 in New York City. His father Daniel, who was a lay preacher and straw vendor, and his mother, Lurone, were free blacks. Ira's mother died in 1818, when he was a boy. Ira attended the African Free School where he won many oratory contests. After Ira's father remarried, he ran away from home. bodyOffer(29075) The audiences loved Aldridge's performances, however he received bad reviews from the press. In order to improve his acting skills, he toured the provinces, including Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Lancaster and Liverpool. For seven years, he starred in the plays, "Oroonoko," "The Slave," "Othello," "The Revenge," and "The Padlock." Herbert and Stock, the authors of the biography "Ira Aldrige," explain the significance of Aldridge's Liverpool appearance: "the greatest centre of the slave trade in the United Kingdom, where only three years before he had landed as an unknown, penniless stranger. One can imagine the feelings of the pro-slavery elements at the presumption of this Negro to appear in anti-slavery plays like "Oroonoko," "The Revenge," and "The Padlock," and furthermore to see a well-known star like Vandenhoff playing his Iago and a white woman, Miss F.H. Kelly, playing his Desdemona! Such a leap in so short a time was indeed something unparalleled in theatre history, as well as a unique challenge to racial superiority."

    Australian Capital Territory

Born in New York City in 1807 and buried with State Honors in the City of Lodz in Poland in 1867, Ira Aldridge was decorated by more Heads of State that any other actor black or white, yet he is today unknown to the great majority of Americans. This documented history by Owen Mortimer is an important contribution to present and future generations. The struggle continues.
    - Frederick O'Neal, New York City, writing to author in 1990 after reading the manuscript. Friend and colleague of Dr. Mortimer, Dr. O'Neal was the renowned actor, director, author, lecturer and administrator, President of Actors' Equity Association, U.S.A. from 1964 to 1973 and International President, Associated Actors and Artistes of America from 1970 to 1989.

In the era of slavery, two men showed Europeans what blacks could achieve: Toussaint L'Ouverture in politics and Ira Aldridge in art. Posterity has been so unkind to their fame that this study of Aldridge comes as a revelation.
