Training and Experience Crucial, Hubble Vets Say

HOUSTON – The best way to get to Carnegie Hall may be practice, practice, practice and the same goes for spacewalkers working on the Hubble Space Telescope. Working on the Hubble requires a combination of things: finessing delicate instruments squeezed into tight areas while in a bulky spacesuit and gloves; developing a rapport and routine with the other spacewalker and robot arm operator; as well as following a carefully orchestrated schedule all while being prepared for the unexpected. Above all, an astronaut needs to remain calm and not worry about the pressure to succeed. "It’s like being on the 18th green and thinking you’ll miss a shot," said former astronaut Tom Akers. "You can’t think about that. Keep your mind on what you’re doing." Images

Akers and fellow spacewalker Kathy Thornton had the high-profile assignment in 1993 to install a device to correct the Hubble’s optical problems discovered after it was launched in 1990. The planned 3.5-hour task took about 35 minutes, but Akers said the duo was ready for most anything.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN began on radio in Boston in the mid-1970’s under the title “The Great Entertainer." The broadcast focused entirely on the music, career and life of a particular Star. Each Saturday morning, the Boston radio audience tuned in to listen to a show spotlighting the talents of FRANK SINATRA, BARBRA STREISAND or EDITH PIAF.
The show was scheduled to debut in June but still lacked a name and theme song. In May, David interviewed PETER ALLEN, then starring on Broadway in his one man show “UP IN ONE." He found Peter to be “a gracious and terribly funny man.” The song “Everything Old is New Again” came up in the conversation and the two decided almost on the spot that the song should serve as the title and theme song for the broadcast. The show aired on Tuesday mornings from June 1979 to January 1985. At that point it moved to the Sunday night/Monday morning overnight slot. The three-hour weekly broadcast developed a dedicated cult of listeners. Also, during this period a new segment was introduced. Each week the audience was presented with four or five different renditions of the same song throughout the broadcast.
Because of its move to Prime Time, it has become the show to tune in to for Celebrity Interviews and unique musical programming.

A Nice Guy Who Lost His Compass A Time for Careful Reflection for IBM PHOENIX, January 26, 1993... The horses are starting to drink again The IBM Board, which only 24 hours ago was supposed to be giving "full support" to the company's CEO according to IBM's PR department, gave John Akers a well-deserved boot. At least three to eight years late, the IBM Board members were among the last to admit that the "emperor had no clothes." A good time for IBM's shareholders, customers, or employees to rejoice? It is not. It is a time for careful reflection; a time to weigh the options which will shape the IBM future. Akers' departure is but a first step on a possible , but not a certain, IBM recovery. New CEO Selection Process to Shape IBM's Future Whether or not IBM will recover will depend to a large extent on the decisions which the newly-formed Selection Committee of the IBM Board makes in the process of selecting the new CEO. If they merely try to replace John Akers with another executive whom they feel is more competent to do the same job which Akers had held, our advice to the shareholders will be continue heading for the hills, only faster!

George W. Akers
GEORGE W. AKERS, who came to Kansas in 18O3, has in the course of a long and active career served with credit in two professions, medicine and the ministry. He is now living at Stafford, and was at one time identified with the Stafford County Republican, the paper of which his son, Earl Akers, was proprietor until the latter entered office as state treasurer of Kansas. George W. Akers was born in a log cabin on Little Walnut Creek in Putnam County, Indiana, March 20, 1839, a son of Thomas and Margaret Akers. His parents were both natives of Kentucky, while the grandparents on both sides were Virginians. His grandfather, Thomas Akers, served in the Continental Army under Washington during the Revolution. Following that war he went to Kentucky and located near Boonesboro and assisted in the defense of that place against an Indian attack. While a youth George W. Akers attended public schools and Bainbridge Academy at Bainbridge, Indiana, and studied medicine under Dr. J. B. Cross and later in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Indianapolis, where he graduated. With his experience and training he came to Kansas in 1863, locating at Paola. He practiced for a number of years successfully, and in 1881 entered the Methodist ministry and in 1882 joined the Southwest Kansas Conference. He was ordained a deacon in 1884 and an elder in 1886. Some of his pastorates were at Little River, Burrton, Sylvia, Sedgwick and Douglass. Owing to failing health he gave up the active work of the ministry and removing to Stafford resumed his profession as a physician. He also bought a controlling interest in the Stafford County Republican and was its editor until his son Earl succeeded him.
