Music Album Reviews Stripped Christina Aguilera (RCA) Too much Aguilera By JEFFREY LEE PUCKETT jpuckett@courier-journal.com The Courier-Journal Christina Aguilera's "Stripped" is like hearing a study-hall gossip session set to music. "And she was all, like, 'You're a bitch,' and I was like, 'Don't call me a bitch just 'cause I got an opinion,' and she was like, 'You dress like a hooker,' and I was like, 'I'm beautiful no matter what you say!' " Such is the life of Christina, who wants us to feel her pain while also checking out her butt. She also wants to be treated like an adult, but confuses maturity with nudity. And for an album that was supposed to reveal the "real" Christina, it mostly sounds like a pastiche of the Top 40. Contradictions like those are at the core of "Stripped," which just means that Aguilera is like any other 21-year-old: She thinks she's a lot older. Unfortunately, her growing pains are public. But despite its many problems, "Stripped" does succeed on two levels, which will be enough to keep Aguilera on "TRL" every day for months. First, although it has no real musical personality of its own, the album does set her apart musically from Britney Spears, her main rival. On that score it is a more mature Aguilera, to use the word loosely.

Archives Pulse : Excite CD review: Hypocrisy abounds in Aguilera's CD Courtesy Photo Aaron Shakra Pulse Reporter November 07, 2002 Aaron Shakra Pulse Reporter "Irony" abounds in Christina Aguilera's obligatory annual new album "Stripped," but calling it irony might be putting things lightly. "Hypocrisy" is probably more accurate. Allow me to explain. The recording "artist" graces the current issue of Rolling Stone, clad in nothing but a guitar, when she doesn't even play the instrument. The name of her new album is "Stripped," while every picture of her has her face and body full of makeup, and is obviously airbrushed. Maybe she was talking about her clothes, but those don't come off, either. Consider the redundantly titled "Loving Me 4 Me," a simple story about Aguilera and her lover. Hints of the genuine come out as she sings "Stripped of all make-up / No need for fancy clothes / No cover ups, push ups / With him, I don't have to put on a show," but when considered in the context of the image she flaunts yes flaunts in interviews, music videos and album covers, "hypocrisy" comes out as the best description again. Of course, this is nothing to hold against her. Aguilera probably doesn't realize her own homogeneity. She claims and flaunts her individuality in the lyrics of "Stripped" and on magazines such as "Rolling Stone," but neglects to realize or address the fact that she is only able to do so because she meets the acceptable standards for what society deems "physically attractive." The question raises itself: How successful would she be if she were considered "ugly" by the majority of her listeners?
