He was sick of it. During the filming, he declared, "When I am through with this picture I hope never to hear of Dracula again!" He almost kept his word. Though Dracula was his most famous role and haunted him to his death, he never played the character again until he appeared in 1948 in this movie. Working a dozen years in Monogram's "poverty row" productions had apparently softened his resolve. Do we detect here a softer Dracula, less imperious, more conciliatory and accomodating? Or am I reading too much into things? "Hello, Lost and Found? Have you seen the rest of my tie? How about my waist?" But I'm getting ahead of myself. Nachdem er sich einer Varietétruppe angeschlossen hatte, traf er auf Lou Costello (unten), der nach vorübergehender Tätigkeit als Preisboxer vergeblich sein Glück als Stuntman in Hollywood gesucht hatte. Im Jahre 1936 taten sie sich zusammen und wurden zunächst vor allem durch die Radiosendung "Kate Smith Radio Hour" bekannt; ab Ende der 30er Jahre landeten sie zudem mehrere Hits auf dem New Yorker Broadway. Der lange dünne Abbott spielte meist den Aufrichtigen, der durch seine Fragen dem eigentlichen Komiker Costello Gelegenheit für dumme Antworten gab. Er spielte einen etwas kleinkarierten Durchschnittsmann, der seinen ebenso dicklichen wie einfältigen Partner Costello ständig ausnutzte. Tatsächlich war er jedoch mehr als nur ein Stichwortgeber für den naiven Costello, der – klein, rundlich und mit quäkiger Stimme – immer alles falsch verstand und ganzen Sätzen einen neuen Sinn gibt. Costello was the voracious Abbott's straight man making famous their routine "Who's on First" and coining the still popular catchphrase, "I'm a baaaad boy!" Bud and Lou got their start in the usual way dumb luck. Actually, when they were barely out of their teens, Bud was working in the box office of a local vaudeville where Lou Costello was on the bill. After meeting, Bud told Lou what he really needed a straight man, and that he, Bud, was available. Lou said "Oh, yeah?" "Oh, yeah, and I'll prove it!" They continued on the circuit together. The rest is show-biz history. During the later part of the 1930's, the boys had perfected their trademarked rapid-fire on-stage personalities doing the types of routines they would use for the rest of their lives. They got their first radio show break as a summer substitute for Fred Allen in 1940. With Camel Cigarettes sponsorship, they got their own radio show in '42, and keep the audiences rolling in the aisles and listening on radio for the rest of the decade, and into the 1950's before jumping to TV.
