Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Jason Jones E-mail More Reviews Quote Saying goodbye to old friends is one of the hardest things in life to do. Remembering old times and laughing is often the best way to do it. In 1948, Universal Studios (more precisely, Universal International) did just that with old friends Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster and the Wolf Man in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein As early as 1943, the legendary comedy duo of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Back in the big black cape as the Count was the one and only Bela Lugosi . In addition to the original Dracula seventeen years earlier in 1931, this was the only other time Lugosi played the Count on film. As crazy as it sounds today, Lugosi was not the first choice to play Dracula in , nor in the original Dracula . In fact, he was never the first choice for the role all the way back to his days in a purple lined cape on Broadway. Thankfully, fate intervened and Lugosi was able to close out the character he helped create for Universal.

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN
Jake Tucker E-mail More Reviews At the end of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein , the Invisible Man, voiced by none other than Vincent Price , introduces himself to the bumbling duo. Vincent Price would not meet Abbott and Costello in their next monster film, but the Invisible Man would. Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein The Invisible Man in 1933 and continued with The Invisible Man Returns The Invisible Woman Invisible Agent , and The plot is very similar to the film The Invisible Man Returns Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is only slightly better that this one. The only reasons I consider the earlier one better is that 1) it has Bela Lugosi Lon Chaney Jr.

Although each film represents variations in age related artifacts (dirt, scratches, dust, etc.) Universal has taken great care in digitally remastering these films to DVD. I have to say that after realizing there were two movies on each side of each disc I didn't hold out much hope for quality. I am pleased to say I was wrong. The picture quality of all the movies in this set is remarkably detailed with solid blacks, an excellent gray scale and perfectly balanced contrast and shadow levels. The original camera negatives are remarkably stable for a picture that most certainly will not disappoint! Most of these films were remastered a decade ago when Universal released some box sets on laserdisc. These DVD's are a considerable improvement over the quality featured on the previous discs. The audio for all is MONO but well balanced and ideally represented.

Although this is officially in Universal's "Comedy Legends" series of DVDs, this attractive, welcome package was put together by David J. Skal, who produced the excellent "Classic Horror Collection" series of DVDs. Like that must-have group, this DVD includes a documentary, a commentary track, a trailer, production notes and an extensive collection of stills. It all adds up to a boundary-crossing winner, presenting the best horror comedy ever made in a handsome setting.
There were horror comedies before "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" Bud and Lou themselves made "Hold That Ghost" in 1941 and plenty afterward, from "Young Frankenstein" to 2000's "Scary Movie." "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" was followed by other comedy-thrillers in which the duo met the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, the Mummy and "The Killer, Boris Karloff." But this, their first "meet" movie, remains not only their best movie, but the undefeated comedy-horror classic of all time. It's funny, it's scary, it's handsomely produced, the score is terrific, and it wraps everything up neatly.

By John J. Puccio
The year must have been around 1950. I was six or seven and my dad took me to see it in re-release because it had been made several years before. It scared me to death and made me laugh till I cried. Most of my childhood fancies seem dated now, silly and juvenile, but not this one. Ever since I first saw it, I have harbored a not-so-secret and not-so-guilty delight in the minor comedy classic, "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein." In the 1930s, Universal was the king of the hill so far as monster movies went. They had struck it rich with the initial "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" films in 1931 and followed them with a roster of equally notorious creature sequelsvampires, werewolves, mummies, you name it. But by the 1940s the public's interest in movie monsters was beginning to wane, especially given the real-life horrors of World War II. By the mid 40s, Universal had resorted to doubling and tripling up its most famous monsters in films like "House of Dracula" and "House of Frankenstein"; then, when Universal became Universal International and a new studio chief took over who wanted to make classier movies, the death knell for the old brutes had sounded. By the 1950s the world was looking toward atomic mutants and outer-space aliens in films like "Them," "The Thing From Another World," and "Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers."
