But do you remember when Abbott and Costello met The Creature? Yes, it really did happen, not on the big screen but on live television shortly before the release of Universal's 3-D classic THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON . Dan Johnson gives Monster Kid readers his assessment of Abbott and Costello's monster romps and interviews the Creature himself, Ben Chapman, about his historic meeting with the famed funnymen.

biography
Lou Costello was born Louis Francis Cristillo in March 1906 in New Jersey. Standing only 5'3" but very athletic, Costello went to Hollywood as a young man in the 1920s to break into films. However, he could only secure work as a stuntman and in bit parts. Feeling defeated, he went back east in the late 1920s and entered burlesque. After his initial meeting with Bud Abbott, the duo developed an instant rapport. They honed their act in vaudeville and burlesque houses; since the act was becoming successful so quickly, they soon found themselves ascending to greater heights. Comedian Henny Youngman, who was a great fan of theirs, pulled some strings and got them a one-time booking on a 1938 episode of the Kate Smith Radio Hour , one of the most popular radio programs at the time. The team proved to be such a hit with audiences that they returned to the show numerous times, eventually doing their famous "Who's On First?" routine. Several studio executives took notice of Abbott and Costello's growing popularity, but Universal Studios, best known at the time for their horror films, made the best offer, so the team signed a contact with the studio in 1939.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
A review by Damian Cannon.
A sharply written spoof of 1930s horror films, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein has lost none of its humour with the passage of time. It's the unfortunate reality that when corpses need to be transported, somewhere along the line baggage handlers are going to be involved. Now, Chick Young (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur Grey (Lou Costello) aren't the world's best porters but they get by, even though Chick is frequently infuriated by Wilbur's idiocy. However, when coffins purporting to contain the remains of both Count Dracula and Frankenstein's monster come their way, trouble is on its way. The first case comes with McDougal (Frank Ferguson), the owner of a house of horrors towards which these exhibits are going. Steaming about the lethargy of Chick and Wilbur's sorting, he really blows his top when he sets eyes on the rough handling that his prized specimens are getting. Forced to deliver the cases themselves, when it's dark (of course), Wilbur's poor mental faculties let the duo down immediately. What he's forgotten is the urgent phone call that came through that afternoon, all the way from Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) in London. Under no circumstances were they to let McDougal have his goods, because the contents are still alive! Unfortunately Talbot is also "The Wolf Man", which means that he grows an awful lot of body hair at the most inopportune moments. Thus Wilbur is left opening one of the boxes, in spooky surroundings, while Chick messes about outside. Distracted by the plaque which describes Dracula's life, the newly-revealed coffin slowly opens to display the piercing gaze of Dracula (Bela Lugosi) himself. Every time Wilbur notices, the lid slams shut and Chick comes running to find that nothing's wrong. This is too much like crying "Wolf!" for Chick's liking.

Abbott and Costello
Abbott and Costello is the name of a legendary comedy team made up of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Abbott met Costello in while Abbott was working as a cashier at the Brooklyn theater. Costello asked Abbott to fill in for his straight man, who was ill. Throughout the , Abbott and Costello began their career performing together in burlesque shows, minstrel shows, vaudeville and movie houses. At Costello's request, all profits earned from the act were split 60/40, favoring Abbott, because, according to Costello, " Comics are a dime a dozen. Good straight men are hard to find. In they received national exposure for the first time by performing on the Kate Smith Hour radio show , which lead to the duo signing with Universal the following year. Abbott and Costello released their first film in entitled, One Night in the Tropics . Although Abbott and Costello were only filling supporting roles in the film, they stole the film with their classic routine Who's On First Within a couple of years, the comedy team had also their own television (

Lou Costello (Orville), Bud Abbott (Lester), Mari Blanchard (Queen Allura), Horace McMahon (Mugsy), Jack Kruschen (Harry), Robert Paige (Dr Wilson), Martha Hyer (Jane), Joe Kirk (Dr Orvilla) Plot Orville and Lester, two idiotic technicians at a missile base, accidentally launch themselves in an experimental rocketship. The rocket lands in New Orleans in the midst of the Mardi Gras where they mistake the attendees for denizens of another planet. With two escaped convicts aboard as stowaways, they next head on to Venus. There they become, to their delight, the first males to visit the all-female society in two thousand years. A fairly silly entry from Abbott and Costello. The most telling comment about the film would be that, despite the title, Bud and Lou do not go to Mars but instead to Venus. The film falls into the bizarre mini-genre of interstellar-matriarchal-society-as-male-sex-fantasies’ items peculiar to the 1950s - see also the likes of Cat Women of the Moon Fire Maidens from Outer Space Queen of Outer Space (1958) and Missile to the Moon (1959). Such societies nominally fall into some notion of a feminist dream but this was never the case in any of these depictions which featured the prevalent theme of such societies being subsumed and invariably overthrown following the introduction of romance. The women here have all been cast from the Miss USA pageant and come out with lines like “It’s nice to have a man around the house again.” Not much thought has gone into the construction of the society (which seems to consist of women in Roman togas lounging in cheap tinsel fairy-grotto sets). The women are immortal and have banished men, yet the queen is the only one who can remember what a man looks like - thus the small question of how the others managed to get there does arise. The earthbound scenes are slightly better. The New Orleans scenes with people wearing oversized heads momentarily attain a certain

Wilbur discovers that the crates contain the bodies of Dracula and the Frankenstein monster. Dracula revives the Frankenstein monster, intending to use it as his servant. He then enlists the help of scientist Sandra Mornay to transplant Wilbur’s brain into the monster’s head in order to make it more docile. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein - or to give it the title that actually appears on the credits Bud Abbott Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein - was the first of Abbott and Costello’s teamups with the famous Universal monsters. It came at a point where Universal had fairly much creatively exhausted the services of both Abbott and Costello and its monsters. Abbott and Costello had steadily made an average of three (sometimes six) films a year together since 1941 and were starting to run out of originality. At the same time Universal had exhausted most of the possibilities from its Frankenstein and Dracula series, having spent most of the decade shuffling them around in a series of teamups with one another beginning with

By John J. Puccio
The year must have been around 1950. I was six or seven and my dad took me to see it in re-release because it had been made several years before. It scared me to death and made me laugh till I cried. Most of my childhood fancies seem dated now, silly and juvenile, but not this one. Ever since I first saw it, I have harbored a not-so-secret and not-so-guilty delight in the minor comedy classic, "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein." In the 1930s, Universal was the king of the hill so far as monster movies went. They had struck it rich with the initial "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" films in 1931 and followed them with a roster of equally notorious creature sequelsvampires, werewolves, mummies, you name it. But by the 1940s the public's interest in movie monsters was beginning to wane, especially given the real-life horrors of World War II. By the mid 40s, Universal had resorted to doubling and tripling up its most famous monsters in films like "House of Dracula" and "House of Frankenstein"; then, when Universal became Universal International and a new studio chief took over who wanted to make classier movies, the death knell for the old brutes had sounded. By the 1950s the world was looking toward atomic mutants and outer-space aliens in films like "Them," "The Thing From Another World," and "Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers."
