Calculus: Effective Computation and Power Series (114a,b)
This course is designed for students who have had a year of high school calculus. It is intended to review the calculus that you saw in High School (concepts and techniques of differentiation and integration) and to introduce you to those aspects of the Smith calculus program (differential equations, computing and scientific contexts) that are not part of the traditional high school (or college) course.

Problems and Theorems in Analysis I: Series, Integral Calculus, Theory of Functions (Classics in Mathematics) > Customer Review #1: A Beautiful Classic

This book by Polya and Szego contains many wonderful gems of mathematics. The exercises are very interesting, and sometimes I pick the book up just for fun. I wish I had been able to purchase a hardcover copy. Unfortunately, its only available in paperback. This book is suitable for mathematics graduate students.

A revision of the best selling innovative Calculus text on the market. A product of an NSF funded grant, this next generation text is concise in number of topics and lenth. Functions are presented graphically, numerically, algebraically, and verbally to give students the benefit of alternate interpretations. The text is problem driven with exceptional exercises based on real world applications from engineering, physics, life sciences, and economics. Technology is used as a tool to help students learn to think mathematically. The second edition continues its focused vision by covering only the essential calculus topics students need for later courses. New to This Edition
    • New thread of honors sections, called Focus on Theory, that build upon the student's geometric intuition. These sections present case studies in the formulation of axioms, definitions, and proof, including the completeness axiom, the definition of limit, the Extreme Value Theorem, and the Mean Value Theorem.
    • New section on limits and continuity in Chapter 1.

The Mac interface to Maple is a very nice one, although significantly different from the Unix xmaple and Windows interfaces. In particular it supports the pasting of color pictures into worksheets. Also, these worksheets use multi-line input at times, and hence rely on the Mac option that only the enter key sends input to Maple. 99. Taylor's Theorem - HMC Calculus Tutorial

    http://www.math.hmc.edu/calculus/tutorials/taylors_thm/
    Taylor's Theorem
Suppose we're working with a function f(x) that is continuous and has (n+1) continuous derivatives on an interval about x = 0. We can approximate f near by a polynomial P n (x) of degree n:
    • For n = 0, the best constant approximation near is
      P (x) = f(0) which matches f at 0.
    • For n = 1, the best linear approximation near is
      P (x) = f(0)+f (0)x. Note that P matches f at and P matches f at 0.
    • For n = 2, the best quadratic approximation near is
      P (x) = f(0)+f (0)x+ f
      x Note that P , P , and P match f, f , and f , respectively, at 0.
    Continuing this process, P n (x) = f(0)+f (0)x+ f (x)
    x f (n) n!
x n This is the Taylor polynomial of degree n about (also called the Maclaurin series of degree n ). More generally, if f has n+1 continuous derivatives at x = a, the Taylor series of degree n about a is n
    k =
    f (k) (a) k!
    (x-a) k = f(a) + f (a)(x-a) + f (a) (x-a) f (n) (a) n! (x-a) n This formula approximates f(x) near a. (If the value of a is not specified, we take a=0.) Taylor's Theorem gives bounds for the error in this approximation: Taylor's Theorem Suppose f has n+1 continuous derivatives on an open interval containing a. Then for each x in the interval
